I previously owned two R3s and an R5 camera with a Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip. I purchased the Canon R5ii and sold one of my R3s, and I equipped the R5ii with the Canon BG-R20 Battery Grip to match the R3's size. The grip, loaded with two LP-E6P batteries, allows me to capture 8,900 shots at a high school football game at night and still have dual 76% battery life remaining. When shooting CRAW at ISO 4000-5000 under new stadium LED lighting at 30 FPS using a 512 CFexpress card, the noise levels are comparable to those of the R3. Regarding the anticipated Canon R1, it appears to be merely an upgraded R3ii with features from the R5ii. Consequently, I plan to sell my R3 and purchase another R5ii for my collection. By cropping a 45MP image by 50%, I now avoid the need for a 1.4x teleconverter and the associated loss of one light stop (f/4). For sports, landscape, or wedding photography, the R5ii is an excellent choice.

The r5 II has issues with low MBPS. IN 4K 120p it has 135 MBPS compared to the R3 at 1880 MBPS. So unless you are recording RAW or $K fine, the R3 has the batter video image quality. I also think the line skipped video hurts the image quality. So combined with line skipped and low MBPS , you get subpar video quality. I also question Clog2 at 135 mbps.

Thanks for a great analysis. I have used the R5 m1 in wind-blown sand, blowing sea-foam and a wave or two over the bow. After 4 years, it's still going strong. I'll be adding an R1 to the mix but only to get better performance in the first few minutes or last few minutes of the day.

Thanks for the comparison! I’m an amateur, taking a fair amount of photos of my family and related adventures. This includes school events like plays and sports, and family outings. As the kids get older, I expect to engage more in action sport photography. Having said that, I’m at a bit of a crossroads. I have the opportunity to buy a used R3, with some body wear (I’d rate it 8/10), that has 160k shutter count for $2300. On the other hand, I can get a refurbished R5 II for around $3200. I am torn because I know both bodies will do the job, but the shutter wear on the R3 without warranty worries me. I can add carepak on the R5. I’m also used to the smaller R5 body, as the mark I is just current body. I’m not sure how convenient the R3 size would be. Any input on what you’d do in my shoes, considering cost, warranty, etc? I plan on this being my camera for the next 5+ years.
@DanAllouche2 күн бұрын
Hey, I wouldn’t worry about the R3 shutter count if I were i your shoes i might consider buying a new R3 the price has dropped considerably. I’d suggest trying to hold the r3 in the hands first and get a feel for it If you like the size and weight than it’s a no brainer its a phenomenal camera and a workhorse The R5ii is great also, the smaller body is nice but the battery life isn’t in comparison to the r3… It’s tough
@kontaa2 күн бұрын
@@DanAllouche it’s definitely not an easy decision but the a new R3 is hard to justify price wise, as it’s almost double the used one I got and about $1500 more than the r5II after tax. Lots to think about! Maybe I’ll grab the shed R3 and just compare it to my current (size wise) r5. Thanks again!

Does the R5 Mark II allow you to turn on a sound for the electronic shutter? In the earlier R5, full silent was the only option.

I've had a R6 mk ii for about 15 month and I love it, but the rolling shutter distortion has always been a problem for certain sports. I've just placed an order for a R3. If I need higher MP I can upscale the relevant file or files, but that stacked sensor is what I'm after.

I have both and have found the R5II a disappointment overall. A purchase i regret. I HAVE HAD THR r5Ii overheat on me a couple of times and shut off shooting hummingbirds in Arizona in 95f degree heat, and 4k video in about 80f degree heat. The one thing I like is the premature and 8k, but past that..... gonna stick with my R3. The R8, yes the R8 is a camera I would take per the the R5ii for wildlife.

The R5 didn’t overheat on me once in actual shooting, 35c degrees Maybe update the firmware

@@DanAllouche Then you are fortunate. No, this is a disappointment camera body as far as a small body consumer bodies go. Going back to the R3 and debating on the R1. I mentioned it in one of my videos as the grip itself was hot in Arizona shooting hummingbirds and that was before it shut off LOL. . It has a way to go to be a good consumer body - and, it is as updated as it can be with the second update. 🤗

No benefit to the r3 in post.. interpreting as clog 2 does nothing for the image vs the r5ii that natively has clog2 in the body. When you look at the waveforms, while interpreting clog2, you’ll find they are similar to clog.. so no benefit in trying to switch to clog 2 in post.
