Which Soprano should you get? Straight neck / Bent neck / Curved Soprano

When buying a soprano (as a second instrument) I chose the curved soprano because of the comfort, audibility and size of the case (it easily fits as carry-on luggage) when traveling by plane.

Bought my SC991 from Getasax last year, absolute game changer in terms of amplification and comfort in pit orchestras where straight sopranos are near impossible to deal with

I've been watching several videos on this subject. In my opinion is the straight and the curved neck sound really nice through the register. The curved soprano sounds a bit tinny in the higher register. I've only been playing the tenor sax for a short time but when I'm ready I'm going to go with a soprano because it's in the same key also. ☺️👍

Great information! I owned a straight Yani when I first started soprano, and yes, your hands/thumbs can get tired! Changed over to a curved SC901 (old version of the modern SC992) and it was much more fun to play due to comfort, recording, and you can hear it better when playing!

Great video! I borrowed a Yamaha YSS-475II straight one piece sop from a friend and didn’t expect to fall in love with it! I never thought I’d like the sound coming out from a straight sop but given the kind of music I’m inclined to play, I started to appreciate the tonal clarity that straight sops produce as compared to their curved neck and curved counterparts. Although there most certainly are differences between these soprano saxes, one can most certainly get a darker/warmer or brighter sound whatsoever by using a respective mouthpiece and reed setup. That would influence the tone in a more significant way than just merely the sax itself. Having said that, my right wrist and thumb hurt a whole lot when I first played on a straight sop. I guess it’s something I slowly learned to accept and be more mindful of my posture when playing for long periods.

Great stuff! My ears might be playing tricks on me, but I think you sounded best with the straight soprano, and that the curved sounded the brightest...! I personally prefer the 82zr for myself, as that is the horn I own, but think you sounded better on the two others in this test.

The curved soprano shown at 1:01 is a SC-902, not SC-992, jeez. Note the bell keys on the left side, where the SC-992 are on the right.

I liked the straight neck the best! Gotta say the curved was pretty good. To be fair I play a one piece straight neck soprano. You are right about neckstrap.
