Which SpellForce Is Right For You?

Spellforce 1 is, without contention, my most beloved of all games, especially when I was in middle school. The feel, the pacing, the lore, the world, the cheesy voice acting and corny dialogue, and the music all had me mesmerized. I distinctly remember my first playthrough as an Ice Mage and reaching the Godwall, watching in raging terror as hundreds of Briarwolves overran every camp I'd made and making me ragequit as they swarmed the portal. Good memories.

The game was indeed fun, but I could never get over the silly unit designs... swordsmen using little swords and no shields and doing nothing of use with their left arms always killed the immersion for me.

@@Wallakazulum These days, easily fixed with a little modding and curiosity. Making every race have functioning healers (excluding the Trolls). Giving actually respectably-sized weapons and/or shields to every unit as befits their class name, along with giving more powerful magical variants based on their unit upgrade. (Human Armsman given a broadsword and heavy blue dragon shield or the Dwarf Elder given the Troll Devastator's lightning hammer as a couple examples). Actually making the Mighty Titans truly *_TITANIC_* in both size and power, while making their creation cost monstrous to match with their destructive ability. Hell, even being able to use an npc skin as a Norcaine, or Elf, or even play as an Orc! Won't make any sense being addressed as a human, still, modding made a childhood favorite even more beloved.

Its interesting to me that you consider the dialog and voice acting cheesy, i assume you played it in english? Because in its native language, German, both of these are incredibly good! To this day genuinely just love to listen to conversations in the game. Most voice actors have incredibly charismatic voices and the writers are very eloquent, articulated and clearly educated in fantasy writing. For these two reasons alone spellforce1 will always be a special treat to me

ooo my god, this is it, THIS IS IT, for years every now and than i kept remembering about an rts game that i rly enjoyed when i was yanger and i could not for the life of me remember wtf was it's name, IT WAS SPELLFORCE 2, the moment i'v seen the cover image on the tumbnail my heart skiped a beat, i finaly found it, gone replay it, i can't remember anything about the story since i could barly understand english at that time, the only thing i remember is that i rly enjoyed the game so this weekend i get to experience playing this games for the first time (again). god it was driving me mad every time i remembered about "that" rts game that i rly enjoyed but can't remember it's fucking name

For me it would took the whole day just to play one map lol. I will literally spend the whole afternoon and evening enjoying the enemies smashing against my wall of towers. I think by the end of the game I was around LV 30 and more. One of the best game.

I love personality of Order of Dawn main hero. He/she is tough, cocky, smart and determined. It is rarely in fantasy games that main hero is not some noob from random village but seasoned warrior

I love the Spellforce games, especially the first one. I always tell people when suggesting it: prepare for long missions. Sure, there are some you can beat in 15-20 minutes or so and cruise through them, but there are others, *ESPECIALLY* on The Godwall, that will take multiple hours to beat and are quite unforgiving if you mess up. But unlike many RTS's where sound is paramount and you need to listen for certain audio queues or whatnot, you can get away with listening to music or a podcast while playing Spellforce, there's a lot of downtime.

Good job! Ultimately I want people to buy them all, the more the franchise sells the better, but the value of SpellForce Platinum is unquestionable, for 9,99€ you get a great RTS with some expanded elements to economy, diverse unit rosters with six factions, 3 Campaigns + Free Game Mode, less restrictive RPG elements, the most consistent story and even the graphics still hold up quite well for its age.

I think they just went nuts with the money grabbing in Spellforce 3, why cant they release a version that has all 3 campaigns and all 6 races available for skirmish? Is that too much to ask? Instead we have 3 separate games each taking a lot of hard drive space and no way to have a 3 vs 3 skirmish featuring all races.... Makes me miss Warlords Battlecry 3 from where they stole music and ideas.

Sadly, EA killed the original studio that created Spellforce 1 and the original Spellforce 2 was rushed due to it and following that, the studio got axed. And the later Spellforce 2 DLC's were done by a new studio. Which I only recently learned and it broke my heart.

Tahar, soul harvest, and the circle just does not add up. They are not in a lore that support and help explain each other. Tahar just died in a trivial ambush. The members of the circle are not mages but Tahar’s companions. The lore of this game is so broken.

@@davidnnn6986 I can imagine circle mages as rebel mages/freedom fighters who later become tyrants themselves. Forgotten knowledge lying deep in Mulsantir might corrupt them. The death of Tahar makes no sense: I can imagine Tahar as first chairman of the Circle who died in accident involving the Archfire. Others continued researches and became corrupted by power.

I love the SF games to the death, especially 1 and 2. Spellforce 3 was nice, but no really Spellforce anymore. My favourite is the OG first part with all of it´s addons. I also do have the figurines of the SF1&2 games. You are a SF nerd too, it seems. Subbed :)

just started playing spellforce platinum after the entire franchise went on sale I do think its cool that the devs made a thing in lore for why there are a lot of small maps connected together by portals, quite creative way to tell a story within limitations

Spellforce 1 is a gem! I love nearly every part of it, and the parts that I don't could mostly be modded quite easily... Easily top 3 of my all games, and still the one I come back every now and then for a 'nostalgia factor' (even if just to hear the in game music in Liannon and Wildland Pass)

I played order of down 6 or more times. One of my favorite type of games. In spellforce 2 i played 2 times in orginal game and two DLCs. This game have much more MOBA experience. Less buldings, less units. Faster action. Fev skils and spells. I like it and story are better but i like mechanic from part one a loot more. The 3 part i dont play at all but i think the heroes and skills mechanic are better then in 2 . My GPU have big problems now( noname power suply near deatch) and i play breath of Winter second time.

@@Wormic It's that older game feel where the Graphics become so aged that they become their own style. They don't generate an uncanny valley effect because they are so unrealistic as to not make you think about realism at all. I don't know, as a younger person who mostly plays older games (Because fancy computers are expensive) maybe these graphics were simply never 'Good' for me and I'm unused to the newer stuff today.

You can do what I did and eventually grab them all via sales (Aside from the spellforce 2 expansions) :P , I actually got in when I grabbed spellforce 3, shelved it for a bit and then hopped back in when I got Spellforce "Reforced", then after I slowly grabbed the others over time. Switching from 3 to 1 is pretty jarring, with the "reforced" rerelease spellforce 3 feels less like spellforce 1 and more like the warcraft 4 we never got, which isn't bad but isn't quite the same dealie.

I see alot of people bashing on spellforce 3 when it was a much needed refreshment for the series for 1 reason: actual dialogues between characters and backstories I think they did a good job considering they basicly revived (Or tried) a franchise that was dead since 2007 Played and loved SF1 back in the days, the overall story was good but it never really succeeded in making me care enough about the characters like SF3 did. (Oh Rowen died? ok. Oh Lena died? ok) Killing the circle in SotP actually stings and feels bad now. And honestly, the retcons dont even bother me, I come from the Elder Scrolls comunity and with each game/mmorpg expansion the lore is always changed to hell and back. Sometimes retcons are necessary and I'm just glad they even bothered adding a new entry to the franchise.

First spellforce is quite cool, just need to use 2x speed hack, because unit's movement speed is like in super slow motion. It's quite difficult with very spongy and repetitive enemies, so it become kinda tilting. I liked sf2, it's shorter and more chill.

Phenomic Spellforce was the real deal .. So basically Spellforce 1 + Addons and Spellforce 2 + Addons i liked Spellforce 1 better Storywise and the Maps were truly epic and mysterious for that time Spellforce 2 had better graphics but seemed rushed at the end .. always wonder why they didnt continue the series Spellforce 3 did a great job too , but the endless back and forth into these buildings was a bit annoying , still i was playing the hell out of these games !

sp2 looks really great with everything on max imo, for such an old game that is I love sp1 and sp2 so much, but I'm afraid of picking sp3, I was so in love with how the ability trees work in sp1 and 2 also, in sp3 it looks like it's just there like "hey, um, so you're kinda have a main character but you kinda don't. So he can do stuff but you're not allowed to change a lot" in the other version the focus (gear, abilitys) was more on the actual main character and it's companions rather than your units, which I favoured. hopefully sp4 will be more like that again, or make them release a spellforce 1 and 2 remaster, especially one for sp1 And what you said about the story in sp3, it made me even more sceptical, ngl. The story in sp1 and sp2 isn't comparable to the witcher 3 for example, but it feels so immersive. I feel like getting pulled into another world even though there's not that much of a story if you compare it to some other players favorite games, for me still a gem.

To be completely fair i think graphic "Aged" better in spellforce 1 when we think about how much time has passed and how graphic has changed in games. Older styles tend to be more universal and while close-up sf1 looks dated them it looks quite okay from afar, with sf2 there is this problem that new artystyle is just uglier (at lest from my perspective) and because of that it aged worse. Still - all of that simplifications made the game play completely different and i would really included this on pros/cons (you also said this, but did not include this) About expansions to sf2 - Dragon storm is great. (for me its SF1 campaigns then Dragon storm then sf2 basic) BUUUT rest of the expansions are one of the worse games i ever played. It might be fun, but i would treat it more like curiosity for fans rather than actuall thing you WANT to complete, if you do, then cool) but dont feel force if you just dont like it, it is not worth that much anyways,

I remember the first one. It sends you round and round in circles for ever for certain quests to get good armour or weapons. Even after you get one weapon or armour you have to do additional quests to activate it.

Going from SpellForce 1 to 2 was a jarring change for me. The absence of meaningful customization in 2 made it feel like my RPG choices were moot; I was on a set path, because everything was a mirror of each other. You couldn't dive all into a certain stat, or uncover unique mechanical interactions. And the random stat itemization made everything feel like a side grade. All that was left was the RTS, and there wasn't enough depth there to keep things engaging. I ended up sticking to the same bread and butter melee-range spam. I tried to get into the DLC, but I couldn't stomach it any longer. However, I will say the music of 2 matched the 1, it was great. I still listen to it now.

If I remember correctly, the reason the skill system isnt as fleshed out is, most likely, cause the studio was rushed during development by EA and didnt get to finish what they planned on making. But considering that, they still made an incredible game. Besides that, I totally agree. There were so many cool and whacky build possible in 1, it's hard to find anything even close to it in RTS style games. I played once SpellForce 1, but it didn't really touched me, and it looks like third game is not for me because of non-original developers + weak storyline / worldbuilding, cause it's the main focus for me in fantasy games. So I'll give a try to Spellforce 2 AE, especially because of my childhood memories about watching someone playing this game and wanted play something like that so bad back then. Also because of good edition for modern PC's even on Steam. Although I think I want to make an exchange for the 1st game to and give it another try, also because of good edition on Steam as well as many positive reviews from people all over internet. But tell me please one thing: if I choose this version in Properties which you've mentioned in the video - will I get the updated for modern systems experience such as wide and high resolution, etc? How's these versions differs one from another?

Spellforce The Order of Dawn and all dlc were awesome, and Nostalgia sometimes gets me! Spellforce 3 and 2 have lost the original spirit of the game, for some reason they are completely different, I'd say separate. I don't like RTS sector's mechanics, animations, and RPG in SF3. SF2 is the most simplified of them.

@@Wormic I can say, SF2 has nice musical compositions , but graphics spoils the whole impression and plus to this simplification in RPG/RTS. Story is interesting and more deep than SF3 has. Unfortunately, I cannot play SF3 for the second time, this is a game for one time than SF1 and SF2. The first part is magical, I can't describe those emotions by another way, when I first started it. It's like opening an interesting book, as if you are inside the plot, how smooth and thoughtful everything is! I don’t even know the recipe for how to do something like this, it’s probably like many masterpieces, "Terminator 2", they cannot be repeated..

there is no which spellforce is right :D , any of the Spellforce Series are Mostly a Perfect Game with so mutch Memory and nostalgia my whole childhood is within these games and these days i also love to play spellforce 3 , however i have to say that i don't favor Spellforce 3 it is still a very good RTS Game but for myself its kinda like a "new" game not an 1:1 to be a so called Spellforce anymore, it do give u a very good campaign and storytelling about the Past what happend even before Spellforce 1 and stuff like that but idk how to tell that.. it just does not feel right to play it as an Spellforce even more tho that the Company THQ Nordic sadly puts PvP/Tournaments/Ranking over the Most Important Feature of All time in Spellforce the good old Coop/Free Playing Mode ,Yes they do took it to the point to play Coop Campaign and that one Wonderfull thing itself but holy i played soooooo damn many hours just in the Free Play Mode in SP1 and SP2 i can't even count them anymore

Played so much spellforce in college. Loved the order of dawn and breath of winter but could just never get into shadow of the phoenix for whatever reason. Spellforce 2 is just awful by comparison. The character classes are so watered down no character feels unique anymore. Such an important part of the original was that playing through as a heavy or a pyromancer was a totally different experience. Also models in 2 are so morphed and goofy looking. Based on a lot of reviews it seems like 2 might be more approachable for the average guy for whatever reason but the original is the superior game imo. Keep in mind too each expansion is basically a game in of itself with a new character and lengthy campaign. You'll prob only play one then move onto another game and come back later for the others.

The time line for the games in my mind it SF3 - SF1 - SF2. mainly because the map in SF3 is 1 large map so it has to be before the lands were split but I still enjoy SF2 and SF3 is ok if I just want to kill time and mess with different character types.

i largely prefer the first game. I liked the third one mostly even if the Guardians are suddenly not gods anymore and that you can be friend with the Dark Races with no problems. Or that the Circle was suddenly infeoded to Nortander when it was specified in the first game that they didn't respond to any authority. but loathe his dlc soul harvest.

The link on How to Fix the SpellForce 2 Graphics is reffering to Anniversary Edition. The other one about bugs is the hardware patch basically which is for Gold Edition. Which one should I go for? I noticed that downgrading from Steam Betas and editing the config xml causes a couple issues. 1 in 1080p when I open the inventory/character screen my character's head doesn't fit in the window and the other is that the game keeps saying that its running at 1024x768 even though it's widescreen now and I've set the config file to 'read only'. Gold edition generally needs no graphic fix. You can increase the resolution with the hardware patch but keep in mind that the games were developed at a time when 4:3 was the standard, so 16:9 won't look ideal and will most certainly contain visual glitches. As for the version, gold over anniversary any day. Anniversary has basically no perks and the few it does come with are outweighed a bunch of game breaking bugs they patched back in

I'm totally in the first SF games. Even SF 2 was difficult to adjust for me with all that changes. (meanwhile i have to say that most of them were good and needed) but SF 3 is so bad at all imo. 😕

@@Wormic i got a beta account before launch of SF3 and i was so disappointed about mechanics and the sectionbased gameplay. I know the game was totally bugged when they launched it before christmas but i never went back to it. Id rather play the old games.

Allow me to make my own version; Spellforce 1 - You're a legend and a lover of good old games Spellforce 2 - Same with SF2, but this game is not as old Spellforce 3 - You have no idea about Spellforce, just like the lore writer for SF3

As someone that loves more modern RTS and RPGs, I think Spellforce 3 Reforced is really good and is harsh to put it below Spellforce 1 which has aged pretty badly (still very enjoyable but with serious need of a proper remake). In fact, I would only recommend Spellforce 3 to new players unless you are nostalgic for that era.

@@Wormic Gameplay. I tried Spellforce 1 and gameplay speed and controls are... lacking at best. The graphics still holds, the music is good and the story too but I don't see new players getting into S1 without a desire for nostalgia. It's like trying to play Morrowind after Skyrim. But yeah, everyone wants different things in a game and S1 is a solid one.

I loved SpellForce 2 and the first expansion pack but SpellForce 3 disappointed me greatly. The game feels very unpolished and overall to me seems like some kind of a warcraft spinoff more than a SpellForce sequel

Spellforce 1 will always be much favorite spellforce game. The graphics in 2 often seemed too shiny, oversaturated or with excessive lighting. And the level classed system was an utter disappointment after 1. Spellforce 3 is a weird game, and is basically for me, to spellforce what the 1998 Legendary pictures Godzilla was to Godzilla It sucks, it's not a spellforce game because you can't go 3rd person. Which is like calling a T-rex who can't breathe fire and dies to fighter planes, Godzilla.

For me is the best spellforce 1 gameplay-wise, and spellforce 3 story-wise. I do not enjoy that much spellforce 2 as 1 and 3.

I like Conquest of Eo since it goes back to canon lore. As for the SF3 expansions: they follow the SF3 lore which I'm not interested in since it's full of lore breaks. As for gameplay, it is a bit better than SF3 base, but also not my cup of tea.

the first game is great but some levels are just pure bollocks like that demon infested canyon , the few resources force you to cheese your way to victory by spamming those orc shamans or whatever they are , levels like that make me doubt that ill ever finish the game

I played the first game and its DLC's and still do for a nostalgic reason but I stopped after the Dragon Storm Gold Edition, the second game & its first DLC, as the story....hm....did not sit right with, but overall what i loved was the combo of abilities,

I dunno man, i am a huge fan of Spellforce 1 and all it's addons. I still have CD's of SF1 and SF2 from 15 years ago, never finished SF2, not having runes and blueprints just doesn't make sense.

For me its Spellforce:passable (not being good enough to destroy enemies fast and not bad enough to lose fast) Spellforce 2:Well i can play this against bots even on higher difficulties Spellforce 3:WTF i should do here ??!?!? everytime i try 1 or 2 skirmishes im getting mopped

Maybe it's my nostalgia speaking, but the only thing that aged badly in SF1 are hair textures hahaha, wear a helmet asap! I love the artstyle and simple models work really well after so many years. Spellforce 2 looked bad on relase and I still don't like the artstyle and the "better" but worse aged graphics and models, everyone's too small and too wide and their faces are weird.

I cant find anywhere what campaigns exist, could someone tell me? I know humans and trolls... can i play dark elf campaign, what campaigns do all 3 expacs have?

Normal spellforce 3 has a human hero with access to the elf, human, and orc armies. Dark elf campaign is in soul harvest, troll one is Fallen, God. I have not played soul harvest or fallen god. Spellforce 1 platinum is a rune warrior(s) in each with access up to human, elf, dwarf, orc, troll, dark elf rune armies in that order in the first campaign: order of dawn. Spellforce 2 shadow wars have realm with the 3 light races, clans with orcs, trolls, and barbarians, and the pact with dark elves, gargoyles, and shadows. Dragon storm expansion has a mainly shaikan army campaign.Faith of destiny is like a 10-hour campaign(only 4 maps) it is the weakest in the series along with the demons of the past which I never finished. However both 2 have a new nameless army, playable in skirmish only I think. Both of them are very buggy and unfinished without community patches. Buggy quests etc. Spellforce 1 platinum has 3 campaigns,spellforce 2 anniversary is shadow wars+dragon Strom with enhanced gfx. For platinum edition 1.54 "beta" is highly recommended as the default 1.61 patch is very buggy, crashy. For spellforce 2 community hardware patch is recommended for all 4 campaigns. For demons of the past community fixes"patch".Spellforce 3 is ok without any "outside" help but it is the newest and it is a highly CPU demanding game.
