My family is the Beveridges (aka Beverage) which have been traced to 1303 Scotland. We've always used the District of Fife tartan. I could find custom kilts with that, when I could find it, but it was bonkers beyond my price range. So I have a kilt that is in my budget with a tartan that is a lot like the Fife. The color scheme is the same green with red stripes and the stripes are a lot like Fife. My first kilt was a utility kilt. I didn't know our tartan, so I bought solid brown. My favorite color is brown. I figured that was a safe route, particularly since its a modern kilt. I aim for authenticity and respectfulness to the tradition. I have a friend with a kilt - leather with chains. He's going to be seen, to be goth, whatever. Its a costume. Mine is not a costume.

On the red and green heavy tartans I think Modern looks way too much like a Christmas decoration

YES - instead of looking Christmas for a summer wedding - the weathered option imho is the better choice for at least my clan tartan :D

@LeaperiteProductionsLLC yeah literally all 3 of the other palletes look less Christmasy than modern if your tartan is a red and green as the dominant 2 colors.
