Thank you John for your insights into this year's tomato season. I grew what I thought was beefsteak but it turned out to be a mini version of the beefer and grew really well ( just in potting mix in an old wheelbarrow tub) and grew a couple of Desiree potatoes in there as well. They all came up well and I have been really enjoying eating my rewards!! Next tomato season I will be able to utilize my new raised garden beds which have been done with hügelkultur and then permaculture on top so my Winter veggies will be planted over this coming weekend. My back yard has been transformed from overgrown long grass with blackberries into what I hope will be a very productive veggie garden. PS: I have been going through all of your videos to glean information pertinent to my growing schedules so thank you mate :)

I had the most devestating garden season this year. It rained more than I've ever seen in my life, and was the coolest summer I can remember. Everything struggled with being cold, waterlogged and diseased. I think I only got 2 single tomatoes between the weather and the birds. I've started harvesting carrots though, and they are doing well now that we are having some dry sunny days!

I grew 6 Apollo plants this year which produce lots of very perfect looking round tomatoes, nice but not a patch on the Red Russian with its phenomenal flavour, the earliest to ripen but this solitary plant didn't grow or produce well. My Rouge de Marmande is weeks behind the others, quite a few tomatoes but nowhere near ripening anything yet in mid April in this cool windy northern Tassie summer.

Great tomato discussion John. I grew San Marzano in the greenhouse this year to make sauce - it's what the Italians do lol! I got the seed from Tassie's own Southern Harvest, and they have been fantastic. Also I grew KY1 outside (they look like Rouge de Marmande) - really productive with loads of trusses. Also Tommy Toe in the greenhouse - a really good large cherry. Grew a few Rouge in the greenhouse but they totally failed - who knows what happened! I was going to dry some but I can't think where I'd use them. Winter is really starting to gather pace in Victoria now..

Thank you, I’ve just subscribed, love finding someone in Australia. I’m in Adelaide, a bit warmer and dryer than Tassie. Loved the part about dehydrating tomatoes. I think in SA we have quite a long growing season because our Autumn is often just so warm up until the end of May.

Your tomatoes look great. No luck for me this season. The heat waves were really challenging.

Just pulled the last of my plants out this week. I grew Roma, a giant Roma variety, and Grandma's throwing variety which are a really nice tomato.

Grandma's throwing variety? Interesting description! Can you give us more information?

@@homesteading I bought them from Bunnings so they are available. Not unlike a Money maker- large fruit, plentiful, flavoursome with a nice amount of flesh. I've grown them for 2 years now and will again.

I'm new to your channel. I live on the Tasman Peninsula. I am impressed by the way your tomatoes are ripening. Down here, I have some really impressive Romas and Black Krims, but the beefsteaks and KY1s are not ripening. I'm on the Tasman Peninsula, and wondering whether they'll ever ripen. What do you think? So nice to see a Tasmanian channel. Thank you so much, cheers, Kerry.

Hard to comment on your unripe tomatoes. Being at the other end of Tassie I'm not sure about the weather down your way, but remember that if they are likely to be frosted (and are still not ripe) you can pull the vines and hang them up somewhere warm to ripen.

G'day John. Thanks for another informative video. You've given me an idea and I think I'm going to try drying some tomatoes in my home made biltong dryer. I will make a video of it and send you the link. Have a wonderful day further, Jacques

I grew 'beef steak' this year, had a terrible year with disease after an amazing crop last year. 😣 Still got some decent feeds, just not the huge crops I'm use too. Not sure what I did wrong.

That's gardening! Sometimes you win...sometimes you don't! I found this year was really bad year for disease across most plants.

I also tried growing Nasturtium where I grow Tomatoes I believe they can counteract Nematodes is that why you had them in your Tomato patch? I also grow them under my Lemon tree and I know you are not meant to do this but I still get large Lemons each year.

hi john, do you think a green house with clear polycarbonate is a viable alternative to the plastic you use? thanks
@homesteading2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is certainly an option, more expensive to build, but would last longer.

Mini roma for me,The fruit fly doesn't seem to get them so much.
@homesteading2 жыл бұрын
Yes, fruit fly is a problem in some places. I can see how the small Roma's would have less problems.

if you are very lucky, you can choose any tomato you like and it will grow. however for most, propely documented and up-to-date disease resistance is key, to having anything but dissapointment. blights are regular killers of tomatoes, after plants growing great beforehand. this is why it's silly to keep planting old varieties with repeated failures, hoping that nostalgia overcomes disease predisposition of tomatoes. they all taste much better than supermarket tomatoes, as those are picked green, before sugars had a chance to develop. if the seed website doesnt properly detail extensive disease resistance package, i dont bother. if the variety doesnt perform like i want, it's time to change. Growing indeterminates with hardware for lower and lean method (on mainland) is the easiest and lowest cost in long run. Dont bother with stick supports. Spray insects as needed, rather than hoping they'll magically go away; they wont, and they spread disease. Watering and fertilizing regularly via dripline is great.

I grew Burnley Gem, Beefsteak & Ox heart this year & they were beautiful & large but were decimated by green shield bugs. I sprayed with organic pyrethrum spray but to no avail. Gave up on the crop! 😭 Any suggestions for next year if I get the bugs back? 🤔
@homesteading2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had to deal with that problem, so don't really have any suggestions other than try to strike early if you see a problem. It can be really hard to win if their are already too many pests!

I used to have these disgusting stinkers on my raspberries every year. Once crunched never forgotten! I kept a screwtop widemouth plastic jar in the patch, containing about an inch of used oil. Every day I would go through the patch. Hold the open jar beneath the bug, tap the branch and it will drop into the jar and be glugged to death in the limpid golden pool. Very satisfying! Quite addictive. I caught thousands. Eventually tip the contents out in the chook pen and they may eat them. I used to find resident frogs and preying mantis in the foliage, got to know them quite well. So they were also eating the bugs. Spraying anything, even organic, would have killed these wonderful predators.

@@rubygray7749 Thank you for sharing your experience. Sounds quite intensive... I'll have to decide which I'd prefer - tomatoes with hard work or not! After this year's disappointment, I'm thinking not.
