Bob, As always your presentation is excellent. I'm happy to see that you carry a minimum of useful tools, but the thing that encourages more the most is your comment at the end. It's so encouraging to hear you say that no matter if you can't afford the tools, don't give up! Thank you! love and prayers

I am in the middle of my own van build and I can confirm that the 16" x 24" steel square is an absolute must-have. The same can be said for the Ryobi drill and jig saw AND the scribe tool shown in the paneling video. I would also recommend a sturdy pair of gloves and safety glasses. Being the safety inspector at my company I've seen too many accidents. Work safe folks!

great video bob! in addition to your "must haves" the tools i would not be caught without are: industrial velcro, epoxy, bluetape, 12v air compressor, tire plug kit, zip ties, bungee cords, heat gun, glue gun, soldering iron, hydraulic jack, volt meter, spot light, megaphone w/siren, mini-torch, 2 C-Clamps, fire extinguisher, and a lug wrench. love your vids

I recommend you consider a hammer drill instead of a plain drill. It will put a 3" drywall screw into a 2x4 where a non-hammerdrill will not. Ryobi has a hammer drill too so get that instead of the normal drill.

Thanks so much, Bob... for all of your helpful insight and meaningful discussion of your favorite tools and what all has been most helpful for you. As one who's just starting with many of these... it's more meaningful for me than ever. (I just finished my flooring and my storage drawer sofa/bed frame in my "vintage" passenger van that was recently provided. I needed to go ahead and create something workable for now. Will come back and do the insulating and much more storage, fold-out table, slim counter building and such soon. Just doing some "practice" runs and overnight stays "close to home" for now.) Your insights and observations have been invaluable to me, Bob... in terms of giving me a sense of possibilities...and helping me glean much from your "can do" attitude and helping me to see much of this as feasible--even for someone like myself who is so NOT a natural "handyman", but I've learned much to prepare me...and am learning much more in the actual doing now! Thank you "more than words" for all the difference you continue to make for so many of us!

I have been working hard on my van build in the time that I have in my life and I have used my square all the time. Ryobi tools are a great value. I built my off grid home with 18volt tools & a chainsaw. Don't waste your money on the Ni-Cad batteries, though. Spend a bit extra on the lithium. We have dozens of Ryobi tools & only had one malfunction in the last 17 years. (One drill won't reverse. That's it.) Good video, Bob.

Nice Ryobi set you have. I have the same one but it also includes a reciprocating saw (haven't used), a flashlight and a duffle carry bag. I'd also like to get the jigsaw (have a corded). I got a hard cased set of all the drill bit, hex and socket attachments I could ever use, but I definitely want the quick change drill attachment too... that's a must-have. Anyhoo, you're right... with this set you don't need much else, but you can always add-on if really necessary. Awesome buy on the batteries by the way! I've had the same Makita sander (corded) for over 20 years and it's still purring. Sorry to ramble but I love my tools too! 😉 Thanks for sharing! 🤗

I also have found Ryobi tools to be the choice electric tool. instead of the drill I went with the 1/2 impact with three speed selector switch as it offers over 300 ft pounds of torque for removing lug nuts making a tire change a breeze and it offers lower torque options so when combined with a drill chuck and a 1/4 hex adapter I can drive screws or drill through anything I need to. I also plan to buy more batteries, circular saw, sawsall and maybe the tire pump. I try to keep all the tools I will need to fix my car and trailer with me as well so there is to much to list here. Can't wait to meet you Bob, you have been an inspiration to me.

Lori Smith I think that would be difficult to cover as there is so much I keep around but some basics. First-aid kit, 1/4 X 2" bolts (and nuts), silicone sealant (and/or RTV), distilled water (can be drank or used in batteries or radiator), gas fitting tape (for sealing gas connections on propane), mechanic's wire, #9 wire (you can do endless things with these), glues (you will compile glues for different purposes and will always be handy). That is all I can think of at the moment maybe others will help with this list.

Lori, if you know what projects you'll be working on ahead of time absolutely bring what you need. But as every project is different, there is no standard, and space as always is an issue, I would buy what you need as projects come up and over time you will have a nice small assortment of leftovers for odd jobs.

I am forced to agree with Bob as that is why I have break line tools and brake bleeding equipment and so much more. I keep a project box for leftover parts that has overflowed into another box twice as big and now I'm forcing it to go on a diet.

One of my favorite Ryobi products is the hybrid fan. Operates on cord or battery. It will run about 6 hrs on low speed, which move a lot of air, with the small battery. I use it often when I don't want string out a cord or have 120 power close. I even use it to stoke the fire when I am preparing to grill. About 40 bucks.

Luckily I have purchased most DeWalt cordless tools over many years for maintenance of my stix&brix home, bits, blades, drivers, ect. they are currently housed in a long crate, which i have planned to install under the back of the bed portion of my van where the house batteries and electrical system will be located. The solar, and continuous duty solenoid in the engine compartment will be included in the build things i have learned from You & Jamie If awards were given for alternate living strategies you both would win the highest honors!!!

Looks like a good tool kit to me. I wish I would have brought my cordless drill. I used it a ton building my camper, but didn't bring it with me because of space. I have been traveling through Mexico and Central America for 1 year and it would have come in handy so many times. I can think of 2 projects I should be doing now, but haven't because I don't have a drill.

Hey Bob, this has nothing to do with tools etc., but something I think you should let folks that are looking to buy used RV's etc. a friend of mind who retired from the police department bought a good used class C off craigslist, he thought it had a funny odor to it, so he ran it by a local state trooper department that had the drug dogs and ask them if they'd check it out, which they were glad to do because it helps with training young dogs, anyway, found lots of residue in lots of places, some enough to have gotten him in trouble if he'd been checked at a border crossing or whatever had they not found it, you never know, so folks who buy used should be aware... just a thought to throw out there....

A tip for buying CHEAP! The new 4ah Lithium batteries work with the older Blue Ryobis. I bought, drill, circular saw, jig saw, recipricating saw, 2 flash light, and a vaccuum plus a charger for less than $100. Added the in-car 12v charger and a pack of Lithiums for another $100. I did buy a refurbished Impact driver which is the other tool I would add to Bob's short list.

In the event you are going to carry file by some clear plastic tubing to cover them ith to keep them from becoming dull from rattling around kith other tools. In the vent you will be working with sheet goods a lot consider getting a dry wall square with 48" or so long blade over a framing square. A chlk line is great fot laying out cuts. Saw horse bracket that fit dimensional lumber will lift your work off the ground. When your done either give away, sell, or trade when you are done with project to save space an weight. Space and weigh is the problem with tools, compromises will have to be made to be made.

If you are doing commercial level projects all the time then go with Dewalt. I am a retired maintenance worker and still doing work for my church. For the average home owner of van / RV dweller the Ryobi is a fine tool. Harbor Freight is a mixed bag. I have found some great stuff and some pure junk that has broken in a day like their hand grinder. At least they gave me my money back. I now have a Dewalt grinder. LOL

In the NW pine forests, often trees fall across the roads after a wind, blocking one from getting out of the forest. A small chainsaw is actually justifiable, and I have 2 of them as well, but at a minimum, the D saw will work for many, but not of the larger pines that go down. That rides in the towed vehicle. My Bahco D saw with the type 51 blade, or the pruning blade, will cut well, and it also does good on dimensional lumber. Costs only $10 bucks, and at 20'', it is good for the back pack too...

4 of those big battery's would provide a pretty good battery for a solar system (320whr). Better than a lead acid and your batteries would take less space and always be charged. The ryobi charger probably charges to 4.2V (20.8V), if you charge to 4.0V (20V) they should last 4x longer. There are 5 18650 batteries in them. I always like the message at the end, "you don't have to be a slave or a homeless person, you can get on the road in rural clean areas and start accumulating happiness and wealth with little money." I have the ryobi air pump, you set the pressure on the digital meter and it pumps to it. Can also be used to fill inflatables like canoes and mattresses. The car vacuum is not too bad either, but probably not worth the space. I also have the chainsaw and it would be good to collect firewood and possibly wood for construction.

GrimolfrE , I worked in hardware and home improvement stores for 30 years. I used to have fun with people when they would ask for a Skil saw. I would show them a jigsaw made by Skil. Or if they asked for a Crescent Wrench, I would show them box end wrenches made by Crescent. Usually I got a laugh. Bob is just showing he is an old timer, when Skil was THE name in circular saws.
