Thank you for this video. Can you provide a link to the exact green scaffold netting you are using, so we can compare the specs to the things that are available in our area? There are so many different nettings out there, it's hard to know where to begin.

Great tip re scaffold netting to double up. I've sewn these to form cages for my beds only thing is cotton does degrade after about two seasons so I may have to hand sew with fishing line next winter. Just got some enviromesh on order to hopefully sort out the allium leaf minor problem

Thank you very much for your comment. Yes the scaffold netting is very good but you do need to cover those larger holes and overlapping always works well. I’ve ordered some environmesh myself and I’m interested to see how this works too! Kind regards. Gary

Hello 👋🏻 Gary. Very nice helpful tips sharing. Thank you. Could you please kindly tell us in your future video how to deal with big holes in the garden? I keep seeing big holes in the ground and inside pots. I am not sure exactly what is causing it. Thank you ❤️

Thank you very much for your comment which is greatly appreciated. I’m pleased you are enjoying the videos. I don’t really have an issue with holes in my Veg area as you describe, however I’m wondering if local wildlife might be a factor? Where I am in the UK we had moles which dig into the ground and produce small soil heaps. This does not cause to much of an issue unless they do it when I’ve got Veg growing! Kind regards. Gary

Could you do one about the best netting etc to limit wind damage to crops? I live in Orkney and we get a lot of wind! I really want to know how best to secure netting safely. Many thanks

My scaffold netting does not have the black strip/holes in ,exactly the same in every other way ,I’ve covered my baby cabbages today at my allotment,I used the hoops of a old cheap little growing polytunnel ,it used to have fleece on but that ripped the firs time I used it ,but the hoops are quite rigid and perfect t for this job ,I’ve made 2 small rows with 3 hoops in each row,then I’ve pinned it down with house bricks !

Thank you very much for your comment. It sounds like you’ve done a great job of protecting your cabbages! If you haven’t got the black stripes on your netting then you won’t have the same problem as I demonstrated so that is a bonus! I will be recording a new video in the near future showing how to erect a cheap but effective support frame for netting so keep an eye out for that. Thank you once more for your comment and good luck with the new growing season. Kind regards. Gary

Looking at the scaffold net, you could lace it together with string I suppose from side to side maybe?
@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comment Amanda. Yes, you could sew or string the netting together but I must admit I tend to prefer the easier option of doubling up the netting to cover the large holes! But yes, what you suggest is definitely possible. Thank you once again for your comment which is greatly appreciated. Kind regards. Gary

Would the bird netting be suitable and durable enough for a fruit cage? I’m planning on building one this year as I lose so much fruit to birds.
@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen

Thank you very much for your message which is greatly appreciated. Yes, absolutely the bird netting would be ideal for a fruit cage. It is large enough to allow bees to get in and pollinate but to keep the birds out. I hope this helps and kind regards. Gary

Hello. I'm going to grow peas (in pots) for the first time. I know I've got to protect them from birds and I've got netting for that, but how do i protect from mice please? I've got enviromesh (which I recommend btw) but could/would they nibble through it? Many thanks.
@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen

Hi Rose and thank you very much for your question. Birds love young peas and beans seedlings and as you point out you will need to net them to protect them with bird netting. With mice I would suggest a fine netting such as scaffold or debris netting, however environmesh should work well. It is always possible that mice may try to nibble through but it should act as a good deterrent. Interestingly, I filmed a video just yesterday showing how to plant bean seeds directly into the ground and in that I show how I used netting for protection. Keep an eye out for that video which should be published in the coming weeks. Kind regards. Gary

What about tomatoes? They must be pollinated by bees, but Yellowjackets eat them along with lots of other insects. If I use insect netting tho, how do they get pollinated?
@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen
@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen Жыл бұрын
Hi Lesley and thank you so much for your comment. Thankfully we do not have too many issues with Yellowjackets in the UK however I have looked into this and ways in which they can be dealt with which I hope helps: Remove attractants: Regularly remove fallen or overripe tomatoes to reduce the attraction for yellowjackets. Set up traps: Use yellowjacket traps with sweet baits away from tomato plants to capture the insects. Create physical barriers: Use mesh netting or insect screens to cover tomato plants and prevent yellowjackets from accessing them. Plant companion plants: Consider planting marigolds, mint, or basil around tomatoes, as these can repel yellowjackets. Avoid attractive stimuli: Keep garbage and food sources covered, avoid wearing bright colors or sweet fragrances, and stay calm to reduce yellowjacket attraction and aggression. Kind regards. Gary.

@@TheAllotmentGardenandKitchen thank you for your response! You are so lucky you don’t have yellowjackets they are terrible. Apparently they can’t get through the tulle netting - the white that you have in the video I think - I’m going to get that and see how it goes bc I already have marigolds, basil, mint, and nettle interspersed with the tomatoes and the yellowjackets don’t care a whit. They want to tomatoes and bite into them before they are completely ripe. I hear you can grab the tomatoes orange and ripen inside but the netting will probably solve my problem!

Hi Ste. There is such a range of different netting available abs it’s really important to get the right netting for the right Veg. The netting I bought from Amazon was good but I guess there will always be products that don’t meet our expectations. Kind regards. Gary
