I have one of the first PS3s ever sold in the US. My friend's dad worked for Sony for a long time and had access to buy it before it had been released to the public and when my house burned down about 7 years ago when I was 14 or so and he was 16 he gave me his PS3 to help me escape from the situation I guess you could say. He also gave me about 7 games or so since he had every PS3 system. I still play it occasionally to this day even though you gotta smack the top of it a bit to get the game out. I still see that man when he comes to town and we get dinner or play the PS3 together and catch up.

The first gen of the PS3 will always be memorable as it was special in its own unique way. I still have mine but with the compatible PS2 unit removed but with added CFW to play them, a later model. 60gigs. The first ones were just gems. I now have a slim to go along with it.

Well they had a ps2 emulator unit inside it technically and it ran VERY hot as it was not a good design but the later versions with the ps2 compatibility parts taken out it ran much smoother. But it’s definitely rare. I have a few CFW piano black NAND ps3s and slim NOR ps3s you can just get ISOs from discs and play them on there like so.

The revision after it was software emulation and that's the version you spoke of where it ran very hot. That said, they were both flawed. One was stupid expensive, the other ran like a furnace. The slim was a godsend for Sony.

The newer 360s (2008 and later) were much better overall than these backwards compatible PS3s in terms of the YLOD. A lot of GPUs at the time had a common fault in the microscopic solder bumps (AKA the Flip Chip) the connected the die to the rest of the GPU (NOT the solder in between the GPU and board, E74 on the 360 can never be the BGA anyways since the failed connection is on the GPU itself, not the board) which would fail due to poor underfill. Almost all NVIDIA/ATI GPUs at the time (including some of the ones used in PC and Macs) had the same issue.

There's literally two different versions of the PS3 with PS2 compatibility... First version contains all the PS2 chips, and the second emulates one of them (Emotion Engine I think)

The first models, the 20 GB HDD and 60 GB HDD (2006 - 2007) released in Japan and North America had both the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer inside. The later revision models (2007 - 2008) with 40 GB HDD and 80 GB HDD had the Graphics Synthesizer only and used hardware emulation for the the Emotion Engine. After that Sony decided to remove PlayStation 2 compatibility completely, along with the 4 USB ports, flash memory card readers, SACD playback, and chrome trim.

@@-PISMO somehow it works i was too young when my dad modded it with CFW, i guess it's because it was one of the first slim models. i saw him once getting a PS2 disc and then simply copying it into the system which allowed him to play it. perhaps a mod built in emulator.

I know what you mean. The 7th generation video game hardware from Microsoft and Sony were very faulty. The original model Xbox 360 had the killer “red ring of death” and the original model PlayStation 3 had the “yellow light of death”. The Nintendo Wii never had any issues just like every other Nintendo system I’ve ever owned. I had 2 fat 80 GB HDD 4 USB port PlayStation 3 models that got the “yellow light of death” errors. The first time it happened I sent the system back to Sony and paid the fee to get it replaced. The second time I decided to cut my losses and bought the newer super slim PS3 with just 12 GB of storage. I was able to install my 250 GB HDD, but had to buy an HDD cage from Sony’s website. The super slim PS3 is so much more reliable, energy efficient, and quieter. It’s still working today after 8 years.

The arcade xbox I had for 8 years never once had any issues outside of the power box getting this awful grinding noise which was fixed just by cleaning it out and eventually buying a new one when that no longer worked. Maybe if I had kept it a little bit longer I would’ve gotten the red ring of death error. Who knows? Sony has had problems with more of their hardware it seems. I know I went through at least 3 different PlayStation 1 systems. Luckily Sears would take them back and give me a brand new one free of charge back then. My friend’s PlayStation 2 got the dreaded disc read error where it wouldn’t read CD-ROMs. So far I haven’t experienced any problems with my new PlayStation 5 or my PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 2 in the past.

I had the slim, and honestly, it’s still a great console with games like uncharted, portal, tf2, minecraft, call of duty, GOW and of course, Little big planet. Graphics still look real nice, still as powerful as a cheap gaming pc (That’s how powerful it was) , still a lot of fun. I’d recommend for gaming on a budget (you can get a ps3 for about £60)

Definitely cool but honestly those models broke easy so it'd probably be better nowadays to get a PS2 and one of the other PS3 models for physical and emulate most of everything else

This is what i did. Always like the look of the original fat one. But I'm more interested in reliability than looks. So I just got a regular slim ps2 and ps3

But that's the only way to play PS2 games through HDMI that's the thing. You can't do that with a PS2.

PS2 consoles don't translate well to HD screens; whilst the OG PS3 cleans those games up NICE.

I bought a 80gb fat model, and I still have it and use it to this day. 👍 I don't think it had PS2 disc compatibility via software emulation for very long. Sony shut that down shortly after I bought mine. Pretty disappointing tbh.

Yeah if yours is not ps2 compatible out of the box you can softmod it back in. On the plus side, later revisions of the fat ps3s, (like yours im assuming) also run way cooler and quieter thanks to more efficient chips.

what are you talking about did you forget that there is a ps5? The ps3 was just as premium as the ps5 in their time lines, the ps5 had major improvements over ps4 however the ps3 didn’t have much improvements over the ps2, still a great console in their own unique ways

Game developers had a hard time with their projects with the cell CPU, so they had to compromise a lot on graphics when using a new unreal engine. Lowering anti aliasing and descaling the resolution, just to get games to run at 30fps.The hardware wasn't up to standard. Are you joking?

If PS3 had been backwards combatable with PS2 and let you plug in old memory cards, It probably would've been very close to the PS2 level of sales.

There was one like that. It had a chrome trim and a little door where there are ps2 card slots underneath. The one they show in this videos actually isn't ps2 backwards compatible

You could probably have it repaired by specific PS3 repairmen for $100, more or less. Then sell it for $300+ because they're heavily sought after.
