Mage is a must-have as either arisen or main pawn. Not only is it the single healer starter vocation but being able to customize your spell loadout to match certain encounters is a huge advantage compared to having to rely on random online pawns to have the spells and enchantments you need

Yeah but it's super easy to pick hired pawns that have the elemental buffs you want, just look at their equipped skills before hiring

@@cloudbloom IF they improve the pawn search options in DD2 to allow us to filter pawns by specific skill loadouts, i’d agree 100%. I’ve been playing DD1 and it’s a hassle trying to find a good mage with the right mix of offensive and defensive skills. On the other hand, tank and physical dps pawns are the easiest to recruit since they work decently out of the box and don’t have to worry about elemental resistances 🤷‍♂️

@@zaoshikung2756 No, what happens is that every vocation has its own stat growths, BUT the total amount gained per vocation translates to what would have been gained as a different vocation. In other words, if you gain +8 Strength as a Warrior, switching to a Mage translates that into +6 Magicka, and vice-versa. Its like the job system in some Final Fantasy games.

@@TheEgrigor Didn't make a noticeable difference, it was only for min-maxers. And I really hope it will be the same in DD2. I always leveled my pawns as fighter first for the highest HP or strider for stamina increase and later on switched to their final vocation until max level.

Starting as a thief for sure, I like the mobility. I started as a Strider in the first game and transitioned to Assassin to keep my options for ranged archery and melee sword or daggers. This time however, I'm definitely going to find out what it takes to work my way to Mystic Spearhand. Been playing a lot of Monster Hunter lately and Mystic Spearhand definitely activates my Insect Glaive neurons!

I am excited for mystic spearhand down the road but if the warfarer's lower stats are not too low or I can still use augments to buff my magic attack I think a character with a twin spear, magic bow, and great staff to switch between based on situation would be a ton of fun to play.

In the first one I started as Fighter but quickly went into Assassin and also used Mystic Knight for a bit. I don't know if to try and do the same (I guess Spearhand replaces Knight) or go into Archer and try that for a bit.

One thing that bears mentioning is that Strider in DD:DA got a pretty significant damage bonus when climbing, making it by far the best class for climbing large enemies. There's no way to know if this Thief has this bonus now, but I'm willing to bet it does. For Archer, Ranger in DD:DA was the best at inflicting status because arrows for every status existed that could simply be bought, which I also presume will be true in DD2.

I’m curious how vocations in DD2 will affect character progression, because in the first installment, the vocations determine your stats and which ones increase based on what your main character and Pawn level up in. Example: if you’re a fighter, early game every time you level up, your offensive and defensive stats, plus HP increase X amount until a certain level, then gradually decrease in points in higher level characters. Same goes with other vocations: strider ranger, their leveling focuses on stamina and hit percentage. While mage and sorcerer: their magic offense and defense stats increase. Hopefully this is getting confusing, but I guess what I’m trying to say is. Don’t go too heavy on leveling up with just one vocation. At least for me, I like having a Pawn that’s well rounded and not just strong in magic but also has good mele defensive stats.

Rurikhan's preview touched on this... His testing showed that it no longer works like that. Each vocation will switch your stats automatically, so you're not forced into playing a vocation you don't like just so you get the right stat increases. Seems like a great change to me, as it'll allow a lot more flexibility in what to play!

I'm definitely rockin thief, most times I pick rogue/ monk when playing d&d.. With that being said as soon as as I can play a wanderer I will be, being able to switch from three different vocations at any time sounds wonderful.. thief, magic Archer, and trickster

I want to know if you need to pick a certain starter vocation in order to learn a specific hybrid vocation. Like, do you need to start as an archer to later unlock the magic archer? And If that's the case which class do you need to start as to unlock the magic spear?

No. Once you have 'unlocked' a vocation through a quest with a Maester, you can freely swap to it, regardless of what your existing class is. I believe (DD1 did this and my impression is DD2 is the same) it is entirely possible to level up in every vocation in a single playthrough, in any order. The only limitations are: Pawns cannot enter some advanced vocations (at least the hybrids, like Mystic Archer and Trickster), and you must start with one of the 4 basic vocations. Warrior may be the advanced version of Fighter, but (based on what I have read & seen) you do not need to have spent any time as a Fighter to switch to Warrior, for example.

Going for human mage (more of a supportive role) and later trickster myself. My main pawn would be a tanned (half-elf-looking) archer who fights cautiously... And with strategic moves. He will be the one providing suggestions to the party during combats. The other two pawns will be borrowed from friends. One of them is a well-built human fighter who is always ready to help party members in need... The other would be a grey-silver-furred catman thief with amber and blue eyes. He acts rather aggressively, always striking first. Guess the fighter will need to look out for the thief often then... I am not sure how the pawns' personality type ai works this time though...

I know my Arisen is going Archer, but I don’t want to do the cliche of making my Main Pawn be a Fighter. How screwed would I be if I did Archer/Mage on Normal difficulty? Idk something different. Seems questionable design to only have one tanky vocation so the two ranged starting vocations are forced to have a fighter with them to perform well. I’m hoping I can distract and kite effectively enough while dishing out damage, while my Mage does their thing by charging incantations with some support too. Hoping this goes well for the beginning until I can eventually hire a third Pawn that will for sure be a frontline vocation. I am probably just overthinking this.

I kinda wanted to go with something different I never go with and made the smallest girl possible, but a mage. I never make mages or the small "helpless" type of characters, so figured it might be an interesting challenge to be small, nimble, vulnerable but use very strong magic. No idea if I'll end up sticking to that though... A gruff medium sized bearded man-of-the-woods type of archer guy also popped in my mind as someone that might be fun to roleplay as. Or maybe an old man mage?... hmmm decisions, decisions. Shame there's no "wisdom" bonus of some sort by making an older but frailer character. Would be cool to be some Gandalf type haha. I'm kind of a sucker for making a general idea or theme for a character and imagining what their life has been like and how their looks would reflect that "story" and how their vocation came to be. (My BG3 character ended up being an asian woman who used to live with a rich family and trained a bit to protect herself, but then lost her parents at a young age and ended up having to learn to steal food to survive mostly in the woods and nature, so she is a rogue thief, but with a high sense of morals and justice, wanting to "make up for her crimes she had to resort to", sometimes almost to a fault picking the option to help naively... and I've played her just like that and it's been interesting....) Either way I wanna go with something a bit different..

Well age might not but weight and build does effect gameplay though. If you make a tall but very skinny/frail old man he would still have an okay move speed due height probably but his stamina/mana pool would regen faster due to being lightweight

What pawn class would you recommend to have or just as a meat shield/tank or just a melee guy. So my Mage can pump out some dps? :D As I will try if I can, to just use my pawn and no other pawns. Unless 1 is needed for a quest/mission. I just like going at it with two, four feels to many. PS: ppl who played DG1 is staying a Mage good, to bring healing spells to the party? or should I just go for Sorcerer for more dps. As I assume there will be some health potions etc?

Fighter pawn all to the max level. If you want the pawn to deal more damage later on, you'll probably switch him to warrior as soon as the fighter pawn reaches max vocation level (to get the other passives). We'll have to wait and see which vocations offer good passives for our pawns if DD2 wil function similar to DDDA.

it impacts them alot actually... for example kind inclination makes them focus on healing and rescuing people instead of fighting so that they would always choose to do that first even if an enemy is in front of them.

I feel like this is one of the major weaknesses the game has: you only can use a party of 4 :( The reason I say this is because Fighter and Mage are so crucial in a party composition, that you only really get space for two extras. So say youd like to have a sorc to hit magic spells, youd probably have to use fighter, sorc and a mage still since theyre the ones who have healing and support. No big deal but I wish I could have more classes in the party, wouldnt mind if monsters were tougher in exchange for it. Just to have that medieval fantasy of full party adventure.

Mystic knight isnt in the game :( It seems mystic spearhand replaced lt or something

I plan to play Fighter and Archer and then Mage for pawn. I hope they changed the stat progression from the first game though. It was my biggest issue from the game and ruined a lot of the enjoyment for me.

Since if I can get my hands on a new SSD and the game, I am a mage/Sorcerer so I'll lose the healing spells, hence why I'm more tempted to use my pawn as another Mage, Fighter being the next obvious option.

I'm gonna start with the thief Vocation and my pawn with be an archer

Thief for stamina then fighter for strength and endurance then sorceror for magic and stamina is how i played the first dd

I think archer and thief lend themselves to the pawn roles better, as support. These vocs, wont suffer as much in these fight from being stupid, like the pawns will be. Having a smart fighter and mage is very crucial during fights as you will see in this game. A stupid fighter will bring damage to the WHOLE team. Your main pawn will level with you, the others wont, unless its changed....choose wisely.

So it's not good to have a Thief as your main class from the start and the Fighter as your main pawn since they're both melee right?

No that’s fine, you can get two more pawns. Like a mage and an archer for example. What matters is that you play your role. As a fighter you have to be the biggest target, the tank

Thief alllll day constant pressure but the archer looks good too and I never play range characters

either a mage or an archer, if you pick fighter, he gonna agro all the mobs and since you are playing close too, you ll get hit too😅
