Which way does the airflow arrow point on my furnace filter

Ever wonder which way the arrow should point on your furnace air filter?
Find out right here: Remember, any heating or cooling system that uses a fan to distribute air is not only blowing air out, but ALWAYS pulling air back TOWARDS it. Your filter slot is almost always on this "return air" side (the "suckie" side, not the "blowie" side). So point the arrow in the same direction that air is moving past your filter slot. If you can't tell which way the air moves just by looking, then do the ol' lick-your-finger-and-hold-it-in-the-breeze test (just don't let anyone pull your finger during this test).
If your filter location is different than the one in this video (which it likely is) just remember that you want the arrow to point (say it with me) TOWARD YOUR FURNACE...or perhaps I should say toward the ductwork the air travels through to get back to your furnace. EXAMPLE: if your filter is located in a ceiling, but your furnace is down in the basement...don't literally point the arrow downward "at your furnace" (because it would be pointing at you, and I'm fairly confident that you are not a furnace), point it UPWARD toward the path the air needs to take through the ducts in order to get back to your furnace.
It is SOOOOOO important that you REPLACE YOUR FILTER REGULARLY! DO I LIKE ALL CAPS!? ABSOLUTELY!!! :)

@@videostothepoint5505 yes! We had a new HVAC system installed in 2017. We have a zone panel installed that controls my mother in law apartment attached to the home. Last year they had to come out and repair it because it wasn’t working. Again this year just a week after turning on AC it’s doing it again. They are coming out tomorrow but can’t figure out why it’s doing this.

@@jeremiahhowe2956 yikes, it’s hard to troubleshoot a scenario like that via KZbin comments…BUT: First, I’d suggest getting a second opinion from a company that did NOT install it. Once they know the situation they’ll work EXTRA hard to find the issue if it’ll make a competitor look bad. 😉 Is the issue with the zoning system? Does the outdoor AC unit run but the copper lines get covered in ice after a while? It’s possible the ductwork is too small when only the the single zone is running, perhaps it can’t handle the amount of airflow the AC unit requires. That zone may need a bypass duct installed to alleviate excess pressure and to allow more air to flow over the AC coil. Imagine YOU are blowing air through a 2” tube, then somebody on the other end covers 90% of the opening. The pressure suddenly builds up and you’ll only be able to push a limited amount of air through no matter how hard you blow. That may be what’s happening?? I’m also completely guessing. 🤷‍♂️ There are a lot of variables and I’d need a bit more information to be very helpful.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who needed help with this. The arrow on my filter says "air flow" which can be confusing. It's easy to misinterpret that the air should be flowing in the direction of the arrow and not have the arrow pointing towards the air flow. Thanks for clearing this up.

If you spin it around now some of the dust it was collecting will get sucked right into your furnace. I have a question. To fix a no heat situation this morning, the service provider removed my reusable filters from my Trane XE80. In my case, the furnace is on the bottom and the ductwork is on the top. On the filters, however, the arrows point to the SIDES (I like all caps, too). So now I'm really confused. Thanks in advance for any help.

Not that I'm a simpleton, but I'd first assume I would put the arrow facing away as the air is blowing out and up the ducts. Great video. Simple, good audio, to the point.

While you are right, you are only half right! There is ductwork on BOTH sides of the furnace: 1. Before: where your filter goes and air gets sucked into your furnace. 2. After: where the air blows out of the furnace. Great comment! 👍🏻
