Really interesting video (as usual). Here's what I've got to say about certifications: I did my first one (the CSW) for personal rather than professional reasons -- I didn't know anything about wine and that lack of knowledge was getting in the way of my trying new things. I enjoyed getting it and learning what I did so much that I enrolled in classes at the Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle College and one of my wine mentors there taught a class on French Wine that doubled as the prep for the French Wine Scholar certification; so, I took that and passed. I don't work in the industry but would consider exploring the possibility at some point, so I asked that mentor what I should do. She suggested that since I wasn't interested in service (no disrespect, just not my jam) that I should take the WSET 3 (passed) and then the Italian Wine Scholar (in process) and that with those certifications I'd have a good entrée to getting a gig with a distributor or with some kind of wine education or tourism (more my interest if it ever happens), mostly because certifications reassure your potential employer that you should know what you're talking about and if they hire you to sell or talk to people about wine you aren't going to say something stupid to their clients. I think that's the biggest professional significance that these certifications have -- they're an assurance to a potential employer that you aren't going to make a fool of yourself while you're on their errand. Same deal with the service certs (like the ones through CMS) -- they give your boss some assurance that you're not going to try to open a wine bottle by sticking it between your legs for leverage or that you'll tell a guest that a Super Tuscan is just a really great Tuscan. So, I feel like they really do make a difference to your job prospects. That's what I got. Cheers!

The Unknown Winecaster I'm looking at that same class TUW. Son just graduated at Sumner and will be attending class up there anyways at South Seattle so I figured I'd look at the options they have. For me its personal enrichment, at least to start with but Im 47 now and would love to be more involved with wine when I hit retirement.

We're in similar situations -- 49 here and perfectly happy with my day job but wouldn't mind doing more with wine or even making a transition to the industry in a few years if the conditions were right. South Seattle is a good place to explore options. They have three basic certificates -- production, pairing and marketing/sales and the faculty there is really solid. I stopped there about the time that they changed directors, so I can't vouch for the new director, but I can't imagine there's anything wrong with her. Say hi when you're in the area -- I know all the good wine bars! Cheers!

This past week I contacted 2 vineyards and both of the vineyards are willing to teach me the process of growing, harvesting and so on. I want to make big money while doing something I love. if it took 8 month’s to become a grower from starting from the bottom and sacrificed so much I know I can do this and I had no experience as well. thank you for your video man!

Thank you for the video. Just to let anyone know grape pickers don’t need a wset and unless you can keep up with the picking crew you’re out wset and all. Vineyard manager would be better served having an integrated pest management certification than this. I wouldn’t recommend Wset if your goals are to be a lab tech, winemaker, or cellar worker because I live in wine country there are colleges for that like UC Davis and Santa Rosa Junior college if you’re on a budget.
@WineOnTheDime
@WineOnTheDime 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I probably should have prefaced this as the WSET will help in some of these roles but you may want more specialist training. UC Davis is a good recommendation, but there are other places too that have programs. For example, Texas Tech University has a program that let's folks get hands-on experience in either the High Plains, Davis Mountains, and Hillcountry AVAs as well as the courses to provide the education on the certification tract you chose. In the end, the more you learn, then the better you'll be. Cheers!

I like the idea of taking it for personal knowledge. Of course I'm older than you and I have already been in and out of the industry. I'm retired and just trying to do some things that I enjoy now. I have made wine a hobby I have been drinking it for many many years and I have had the pleasure of drinking it all over the world. Good luck on all your studies my friend.

Thank you for the info provided in this video. I'm currently looking to do a wine certificate, but I'm unsure about which one. What's your opinion on the CSW from the Society of Wine Educators and the WSETs? I'm not sure which one to go for. Cheers
@WineOnTheDime
@WineOnTheDime 7 ай бұрын
I think the CSW is also a great program. I think, content wise, the CSW and WSET 3 are pretty similar in their depth. However, unless it's changed, I think the exam for the CSW is easier. The WSET 3 exam has multiple choice, short answer, essays, and blind tastings, whereas the CSW is just multiple choice. The step after CSW is the CWE (Certified Wine Educator) and that has knowledge on par with the WSET Diploma, but again, the testing format is easier than the WSET group. Another question to ask is do you want to take the WSET Diploma. If so, then you must have passed WSET 3 Advanced as a prereq for enrollment. Overall from least difficult to most difficult, I'd rank the CSW vs WSET as follows: WSET 1 --> WSET 2 --> CSW --> WSET 3 Advanced --> CWE --> Diploma. As a matter of fact, if you pass the WSET 3, then you can do a quick read of the CSW book and jump straight in and take the exam with the WSET knowledge and have a very high chance of passing it.

Congratulations! If you decide to go into the winemaking route, then I recommend also checking out some winemaking programs in your area. WSET 2 gives some good basics for how wine is made but there are SOOO many things that are left out that a winemaker would need to know. I have a level 3 but I would still enroll in one of the winemaking programs here so I could get all the material that is not addressed in the certification.

I'm wondering about WSET level 2, can one conduct tasting at a wine store, or private small group tasting with only WSET level 2? As you are not called 'certified educator' yet.
@WineOnTheDime
@WineOnTheDime 2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of businesses that host demos and their requirements for that really differ depending on the business and the job. I've seen folks with no certifications run tastings and I've seen people who are level 3's run it because they are targeting a certain audience. I would say that a level 2 is a solid way to start but check the requirements for those openings too. Also, I don't recall WSET having a level that is a verified "Certified Educator." I've seen folks who are level 2s teach classes all the way to Diploma. The Society of Wine Educators has a pretty vigorous program and is accepted by a lot of wine education schools as a "teachers certificate."

Hi buddy, can you help me out as I am looking forward to pursue a wine sommelier certification of WSET from Rome,Italy. I need some information about this certification that what can I do after getting this certification and where should I get certified for like i need each and every single info and details about this
@WineOnTheDime
@WineOnTheDime 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rajat! Your best place to look for information on where you can find a local program would be the WSET website: wsetglobal.com/ Another thing to note that getting a WSET certification does not mean that you are a Sommelier. As someone with a WSET cert, I would never call myself a Somm. The Master Guild of Sommeliers has a separate certification track for the Certified Sommelier designations. The Certified Sommelier differs from the WSET program by focusing on service. WSET is more of the "Academic" path. You'll learn a lot doing either though.

Your best guidance would be to call a place similar to where you are looking to work and see what they are looking for as certifications. That will help make sure you find the right certification for the part of the wine industry that you are interested in going into.

I'm going for my level 2. After that, I'll determine if I do level 3. I probably will after I take a short break to work on a few things for the channel and save up the ~$1500 I need for the process.

True! I would say that you need to get to a WSET 3 at the minimum for that. Preferably the Diploma since it goes so much more in depth.
Should you even do the WSET Diploma
