we are watching this in the crew room at ORD with a very large and distinguished audience. WE ALL FEEL FOR THE FIRST OFFICER! horrible CRM from left seat, you have a lot to learn.
@ReachAviation2 жыл бұрын
Well great to have such highly distinguished pilots watching! Your comment isnt uncommon. We all have things to learn including me. The commercial/Airline world and the AF have differences in our experience and culture. We commonly fly with FPs that can have less than 200 hours total time and less than 50 of that in the Herk. We are regularly still working to build basic aeronautical skills and sense that many civil pilots are still working on in a 172 towards commercial. Not to down play my FP here, he did great, but we also push basic techniques and try to stick to them till you gain the experience to push it. We lack spoilers, in air BETA, and other drag applications common on commercial aircraft. The basic techniques for the top of a 3 degree descent is 5 times your altitude to lose or 3 times for a 5 degree. Experience says I can go much steeper. Thats not the point. The goal is to get new copilots thinking and following basics before they start flying fully configured heavy weight slam dunks into the mountain bowl around Bagram Afghanistan (or some small dirt strip whereever we go next) on NVGs. Our culture is also far more verbal and directive. Active Duty aircrew are even different than our Guard/Reserve crews as we dont have the airline influence. We talk a lot. We get put into regular tactical situations that commonly see the Aircraft Commander being directive till the FP has shown their skills. Try flying a 4 ship formation to an airdrop in a mountain bowl with a 200 hour copilot. When we have an incident, its usually due to somebody letting their guard down. That same mentality to over talk and guard shows through even on something as simple as a Straight in. Youre right, I was probably over controlling. I could have let him figure it out. I can take the feedback and work on it.

I recently came across your channel and all I can say is........wow. Thank you, thank you Reach Pilot, you have significantly improved my weekend!!! I've just binged watched all of your videos and eagerly await new ones. They are simply excellent and I really appreciate you having us along "in the jump seat" as you fly the amazing and timeless C-130. And I must say, that final approach into NAS Whidbey Island is a serious contender for the most beautiful airport scenery on this planet. 2 brief questions to pass along: 1. Do all USAF aircrew now wear BDUs vs. flightsuits? Can you choose to wear either one at any given time? Any preferences? Do you need to be assigned to AFSOC in order to qualify to wear BDUs? I didn't know USAF aircrews could wear BDUs at all and it's a big change from what I'm used to seeing, so very curious. 2. What does the Lieutenant's "LPA" patch mean or signify? Thank you for these videos and please keep them coming. Blue skies, direct vectors and tailwinds my friends. Tony
@ReachAviation2 жыл бұрын
They are two piece nomex OCP flight suits. Generally the same cut as the green one piece. Its up the person which they wear. I prefer the two piece as i feel its more comfortable when pushing cargo or working in hot or cold environments. Something about the sweet synchro phased drone of a Hamilton Standard attached to the venerable -15 brings back memories. The upgrade from an E (Herkey 101) to an H (unit training) was a good chunk of time. The airframe was very similar and the handling was not much different, but the systems... To answer your question, a J squadron would have to keep flight engineers around to help fly an H. Now the FE is still a Crew Chief and their duties are relegated to a box in the avionics rack.
