It was originally a woman singing about a man. It's not uncommon for singers - both male and female - to make minor alterations to a song to fit their own orientation. While it seems kind of silly that they did change it (since it would honestly sound more autobiographical than gay), judging from their other stuff (have you seen Build Me Up Buttercup?), I doubt it was fueled by gay panic.

Wow, so even at Yale, they are so afraid of a slight gay connotation that they altered the lyrics of a famous song rather than singing it correctly.
