Don't forget the most obvious object to miss that is even much brighter than M51: M42, the Orion nebula! Okay, it's not an obvious target right now in Spring (at the northern hemisphere), but in Winter, taking a peek at Orion and spot this incredible nebula with a simple pair of binoculars never ceases to amaze. And what about M31 Andromeda? The ancient Greeks described it as a blurry cloud in the sky, and now we, equipped with binoculars and telescopes, can see this galaxy in all of its beauty and splendor. M31 appears even larger than the Moon, if it weren't that faint.

@@gforce809 So, the next time you take your dog out for a stroll, don't forget to take your binoculars with you, if the skies are clear. If Orion is up there, never forget to take a peek at M42. Different people see different colours in there. The range of intensity and colours is amazing. That's why M42 is the most photographed deep sky object of all times, I guess. It's bright enough as to be visible with the naked eye and certainly with any pair of binoculars. The other obvious target is M31 Andromeda, but all you will see is a grey cigar-shaped cloud. It takes photography to discern the distribution of colours that M31 displays. But, as M31 is really large, you can see it with the naked eye, if the skies are clear and M31 is up there, depending on your latitude and season.

@@Guido_XL My 2 boys(10 and 15) often come with me when i take the dog out on a night and i think my enthusiasm for the night sky has rubbed off on them, especially the winter night sky, they can point out orion, ursa minor and ursa major etc, i often show them videos like these so that they can see whats really out there and the mind boggling distances involved, i think the binoculars idea is a good one, see if i can tweak there interests a little more, we live a short drive away from some of the darkest skies in the uk and we haven't explored them yet so one for the near future i think
@Guido_XL

@@gforce809 Beginners like I was (only a year ago!) tend to believe that it takes a very fancy telescope to get a proper view on the deep sky objects out there. For very distant and faint objects, this presumption may be appropriate. However, people tend to ignore the fact that it only takes a pair of binoculars to get your feet quite wet in this amazing hobby. Of course, once you want to accomplish more than having a peek at bright objects like M42, you have to get yourself some equipment that does not come very cheap, unfortunately. The first and most important thing is a sturdy equatorial mount with motor-drive on the right ascension (RA) axis. It's better to have a motor on the declination axis as well. Without the motor drive, you find yourself constantly turning the RA-knob in order to compensate for the Earth's rotation. Once you want to gather series of exposures of faint deep sky objects, you have to have a tracking on your mount. For more elaborate exposure series, you want to add a camera-guided system as well, but that is not your first priority, although some simply buy everything in one go and take the big plunge into it all. It's not my style, I'd rather take small steps and see what happens. I am learning the constellations by heart, discerning the most well known stars (the navigational ones) and the polar alignment routine with my mount. Patience is key. I am not in a hurry to take the "perfect" picture. I want to surprise myself.

Actually saw it few days ago in observation with a 114 cm telescope (kinda small), but I actually managed to see it. It was very weak, but it was possible to spot it. The sky was a little bit polluted too, it was definitely better with Bode's Galaxy and Cigar Galaxy. I'm sure that with a 10 inches telescope really looks like the first part of the video through observation

And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps to be an adornment as well as to guard from the devils by using them as missiles against the devils …. Whenever I read a research or a discovery, I realize immediately that the Quran has mentioned it in one way or another and this proves that everything is stated in the Quran. Let us contemplate, and praise Allah be he exalted…… A picture that shows the stars that are considered to be like faint and beautiful lamps in the sky, called brown dwarfs, it is about a millionth as bright as the sun, therefore scientists call it light bulbs. The NASA scientists say that these brown dwarfs are the lowest power stellar light bulbs in the sky. When I was following the scientific news about the scientists' discovery of these beautiful bodies in the universe, something caught my eyes which is the expression that they used; light bulbs which means lamps. I realized that these scientists used this expression as they found a big similarity between the mechanisms of working of these bodies (and other stars) and that of the lamp. And here, it should be pointed that the Quran has preceded the scientists of NASA in launching this expression. God be he exalted says: (And We adorned the nearest (lowest) heaven with lamps (stars) to be an adornment as well as to guard (from the devils by using them as missiles against the devils). Such is the Decree of Him the All-Mighty, the All-Knower.) [Surat Fussilat, verse: 12], so Glory to God! --------------------

Not to be nitpicking but objects are classified by the constellation they are in. The Big Dipper is an asterism within Ursa Major. M51 is in the constellation Canes Venatici. Regardless, nice capture. What camera are you using? Also, are you using any software to stack as you capture or are the results post processed? Thanks!

Verynice video but your information about the telescope is a bit confusing: you say it's a Dobson mount then link to an Equatorial mount. I think you mean that your 10 incher originally came on the Dobson mount but you then transferred the tube to an equatorial mount. Also, you are not completely clear about the various views. An other point - it seems that you superimpose both a live view (perhaps 4 fps) on a fixed longer exposure.
