My friend, Andy Calcagno, just told me about this channel a few minutes ago. I retired from an IT career last year and I paid those outrageous prices but I got the bottles I wanted. Bourbon is just a great drink with(most of the time) a great story behind it. That is what makes it great.

Found your channel b/c I live 3 miles from spillway. I’m a man of function over form…so for me whiskey is made for drinking. The very few bottles I have that are “unicorns” were bought with the mentality of drinking and sharing with the type of people I know would appreciate it. The reasonings behind the bottles you won’t open make perfect sense, especially knowing the juice is so-so.

I have a few allocated bottles, I will open them and drink them, but it's OK to put them on a shelf for a few years, it's also a part of the joy, looking forward to enjoy them one day

Have 2 opened GTS, 2012 and 2017 (both getting low and even the 2012 is the same as the first pour), on my 3rd Rip 10. Have an open WLW, Four Roses 125th and 14 year Elliott's Select, among many others. Have few Scotch's that I am humming and hawing about opening as they are impossible/extremly expensive to replace from closed/defunct distilleries.

I don't know much about those 82nd Airbornes, but I'm pretty sure those are OK to keep unopened on the shelf. Everything else, you need to open at some point and drink and share with people who appreciate good whiskey.

I feel the same way brother. If you know you’re not going to sell it for sure, go ahead and open at least one of that kind, especially if you have back ups of that bottle or can get back ups. No man is promised tomorrow!

To be brutally honest, Crack em!! I have never been able to taste a bottle that I have not opened by staring at it. I’ve never had a bottle of whiskey that went bad. Make sure no direct sunlight hits the bottle ever. You will never forget the company you had or the circumstances of you cracking the GTS, or the Pappy, or any other great bottle you have. I always tell people that I do not have a collection of whiskey, I have a selection of whiskey. Cheers!!

having a bottle open for 5 years is not a bad thing, the whiskey inside will change slightly, usually for the better. if the bottle is good, you will be able to find another in the 5 years you are enjoying the sip!

I do not buy any bottles that I do not plan on drinking at some point. I have several that are not open, YET. The ONLY bottle I have, that I may not open is a bottle of Glenfiddich 15, that is a single barrel, barrel strength that I bottled myself at the distillery gift shop.

I have a hard time not cracking any new bottle I get. I have one I haven’t tried yet until my son is born. I’m actually torn between cracking it or not though. I heard the juice wasn’t that good for the price and the price is for the collectibility(Jack Daniels Sinatra Select). I have a second bottle of Jack 10 batch 2 just in case. lol!

@@BrewtallyHonestBourbon I haven’t tried the Jack12 yet, but I can get Jack10 for $100+tax. The Jack12 they want double the price. I can’t believe the juice is twice as good. That said. The Sinatra select was about the same price as the J12, and in hindsight, I should have just gotten that. I was in a bad reception area and couldn’t look the bottle up before I bought it. Impulse buy

@@Aphabet21 it’s not twice as good. Noticeably better, but not twice. Same here on Sinatra. Buddy found it in Orlando and I had to react quickly. 12 is MUCH better than Sinatra IMO. So I agree.. live and learn brother. We all make mistakes. ;-)

I have not opened my jack 12 yet I have opened my 10 but I have a back up , I found a George T Stagg this year and I'am waiting until Christmas ,, Yes Hopefully I'am still here .. seems they may last longer in climate controlled after opening ... Thanks

@@RandyLalonde thanks for sharing. The JD 12 is really good. Better than 10 imo. I opened my GTS, HH, and Rip because every day of life is a gift and tomorrow isn’t promised. This video was to get a feel of the overall population. Seems most agree. Open today. Tomorrow may never come ;-) Yet some say if keeping them sealed gives you peace, then by all means. After all, you paid for them. Do with them as you wish. They are yours :-)

100% open them. They are meant to be enjoyed. All my “never open/collector” bottles are for sale to finance some good stuff I can taste. (Makers Mark stuff from the ‘90s and early ‘00s)

Dude, you shouldn't have any bottles that you're not going to open. Unless, maybe, you're speculating on them gaining value in the future. But collecting is lame, and so is paying secondary prices. You really shouldn't do either.

Your volume is about the lowest I've seen of the many whiskeytube channels I watch. I actually would like to hear what you have to say on this topic and so would like to watch the video but it's not worth the struggle to try to hear what you're saying.

@@Best_Served_Neat_On_Ice I’ve played it back on my laptop and my iPhone w no issues. My phone volume was about half way and sounded good. My laptop on the other hand has to be turned all the way up, yet I hear the video fine. What are you playing back on? iPhone? Droid? Computer? TV?
