Sometimes we just pick up a terrible whisky... sometimes it's worth talking about and warning others of. I've always rated my whiskies on a scale of "Stock it, Buy it, Try it, Ignore it" but some whiskies go below even that to a place of regret.

Just like everybody else, I've had some not-so-good whiskies, but I can't say that I regretted buying them. If anything, I would've probably regretted not buying them and wonder forever "what if". I stay away though from cool looking decanters; they're most likely compensating for something.

I would say my most regretted purchases would be the Dalmore range in general. It happened back in my early days of collecting, so I didn’t know better, but Dalmore King Alexander III at 40% was not worth $300… That applies to the rest of their range too, since I have bought and tried them all (not necessarily a good thing).

There's been many whiskies I've not enjoyed but never regretted just due to the fact that deep down I'd always wonder what it could have been if I never ended up trying it. As with all life's disappointments I try to learn from them and figure out what I didn't like so I don't go for bottles like that again. I refer to these bottles as Monday sippers, they may not be enjoyable but they'll teach you something of value.... Or just taste bad. Either way cheers and I enjoyed this video, would love to see one of whiskeys you wish you bought sooner!

I have a 1972 SiB that I feel the same way. Ive gotten a couple bottles that have set me apart. A 21-05 MMCS I got noses fantastic drinks sour. Also sometimes buying cheap will bite you like Buskers Green label and Johnny Walker Red. I have had good luck with some $100 whiskeys and haven't been disappointed yet, but I know its coming haha.

I’ve had three regular 1792s, 2 were very good 1 was off profile & I did not enjoy it. I recently got a store pick & it’s outstanding. If you can find one(even a regular bottle) at a good price which is around $40 I would still recommend it- may be some minor issues with consistency.. Kaiyo cask strength finished in Mizenura - very good!

I’m gunna be honest I love Irish Whiskey, it’s my favorite I’ve tried so many and love so many…but some 5-8 year old Irish Whiskey is some of the best I’ve ever had. I look at how young Waterford is and seriously appreciate what they are doing. Youth doesn’t mean bad but there is a whole lot of bad young whiskey.

Thank you for a fun review list 🤗 I did make my regretable buys when I just started out exploring whisky, but then I didn't know that, because I didn't have anything to compare it with. Most of the regrets were bottom shelf blends. But there were definitely some that I would buy today, just to enjoy a no-brainer whisky. After that I started to watch ALOT of videos of Daniel and Rex, and Horst Luening, just to get a bit more oriented in the whisky universe. After that I started to make more well thought out choises. I started to follow more whiskytubers in both whisky and bourbon universe that seemed to have about the same taste as I have, along with really educational and fun videos made by warm personality whiskytubers like yourself 🤗 So the ones I regret now isn't many at all. But I was a bit dissatisfied with Glen Moray Peated, HP12, Talisker Storm, Jura 12, Buffalo Trace, Bulleit Bourbon. They're not bad, but didn't tickle me the right way 🙃

@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Thanks for your reply. Yes the 10yo is definitely better. But for me I rather choose T. Skye over Storm. Skye for me is more similar to 10yo, but not as complex and deep in the notes. Storm for me is a bit "hollow" in lack for better word. I think the peat/smoke notes is separate to the rest of the notes. They're not as intertwined as I like the notes to be.

Timely topic as I just pulled a handful of bottles to give away because I can't stand them and I'm done trying to like them. I've tried to see if any of these got better over time so I"ve tasted them all about 3 times now, but nope they still don't do it for me. Bowman Brothers, Rebel Yell 100, Mayor Pingree Red Label, a Larceny pick and a Tumblin' Dice pick. Chattanooga port cask and Isaac Bowman. I really like Woodinville Port finished, but every single other port finished whiskey I have had has a terrible burnt rubber note. I happen to have a 1792 BiB pick and it's been sitting at just over half full for almost 2 years now. I just don't have any desire to go back to it.

so far i have thankfully not had anything that was so bad i had to pour it down the sink. But i was alittle let down with the glenfeddich 12 nice full fruity aroma and no substance. Same with the johnnie walker High rye, had really light on taste that only lasted like 2-3 seconds then flat water. On another note, my current best and favorite was an Elija Craig 18Year. It was $360 but i WOULD NOT hesitate to buy another bottle or 2 if i find it again. It was like a super smooth creamy vanilla ice cream, nose was the same to me, it was just enjoyable all the way around. If you see one i highly recommend getting it.

I've had a few disappointments that I won't buy again: Definitely agree with you about Jefferson's Ocean, and I'll also add their Small Batch to the list too. I'm also not a fan of: Blade and Bow, Basil Hayden's Kentucky Straight, Four Roses Single Barrel, Nelson's Green Briar, Willett Pot Still Reserve, and Woodinville straight bourbon. I found each of them to either be boring or just to sharp of an alcohol blast / single dimensional.

There is a slight hissing sound. You probably need to hit the noise reduction button. Here is my list: (1) ALL of the Connemarra, the Cask Strength is worse that the 12. They taste like gasoline. (2) Glyph Molecular Whisky. To call this "whisky" is an insult to whisky. (3) Sonoma Bourbon Whiskey. It is too damn young, tastes like pencil shavings. (4) Dingle Irish Whiskey, batch 4. I think it may be corked but Whisky Jason in Germany had similar notes. It is just nasty. (5) Proper Twelve. It is 100% pure shite.

Truth be told, the risk of having Buyer's Remorse grows exponentially past about $60 with Scotch, past $100 it's more likely than not. With bourbon & rye, the remorse sets in past $40, and the entire category tops out at about $70 IMHO.

I know Scotch better than Bourbon, so for under $60 I can find peated gems like Ardbeg 10, Ledaig 10, and possibly Port Charlotte 10, and I can find unpeated ones like Craigellachie 13, Bunnahabhain 12, Deanston 12, and Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14. I had heard Bulleit rye was really good so I thought the barrel proof bourbon would be a for sure thing. And I won't say I will never buy any Bulleit products again either, just a little bit leary at this point. BTW I drank it all anyway lol! OGD114 was another one that I didn't like. I learned very early into my alcohol buying adventure to NEVER buy based on the bottle or "story" and many times if I see too much of a story I just put it back on the shelf because most of the time a story just means its inadequate and they are trying to get you to want to like it versus just liking it. If I want a cool bottle I look for that in a vodka or rum that can be buried into cocktails. Also, when I m looking at buying an expensive bottle I ll call around to a few local bars and ask if they have it and try a pour before buying a bottle. Id rather pay for an expensive pour then buying the bottle if I like it then having an 80 dollar bottle of disgusting. This plan has saved me money in the long run because worse case scenario you are out 8-20 dollars versus 20-100 dollars.

I'm not all that far into whiskey, maybe tried 110+ different ones. But I have had three major disappointments so far, and thankfully they didn't cost an arm and a leg. 1. Auchentoshan American Oak - After enjoying this with a friend at a bar years and years ago, I felt nostalgic and bought a bottle on offer. I hated this. Barrel bitter, too young, very ethanol-driven. Ended up using it when frying minced beef, where it imparted some welcome notes of sweetness. But really hated this otherwise. 2. Kinahan's Small Batch - "An Irish whiskey at 46%? Count me in!", I thought. Yeah, well, this thing tasted of soap and cardboard, somehow. I tried water, letting it aerate, nothing helped. It was quite simply the worst whisky I'd ever had up to that point. 3. Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine - it was on offer, and I loved Bunna 12, so I wanted to try different expressions. The red wine dominates and not in a good way. It is tannic, astringent, and doesn't even take water that well. I've since tried the Cruach Mhona (decent, the peat is kinda minty somehow) and the An Cladach (decent balance of bourbon and sherry flavors), and really wish I had gone for the Toiteach a Dha or Stiuredair instead of the Eirigh Na Greine. Generally speaking, I'm still looking for a German whiskey that hits my palate. I've been thoroughly underwhelmed thus far.

The only reason 1792 doesn't make my regret list is that it's no more expensive than Jack Daniels Single Barrel or SiB BP. It taste almost the same but is less viscous (I prefer the JD). As for my most regretted bottles, I would say Hudson Baby Bourbon, and believe it or not, the 2017 release of George T. Stagg for which I unfortunately paid over $400. It sits on my shelf for whiskey knowledgeable guests to try but it just wasn't any good to me. I also think Blanton's Straight From the Barrel is not that great.... What I've learned is that I get very selective on bourbons that get above $100 (pre-inflation prices). They generally aren't that special over a $40-$80 bourbon. Scotch has so much more variety for the money.

The Matsui you have I think is a bad batch or counterfeit, as its a VERY young whisky, and yours appears to be far too dark compared to what's on my shelf, which is so pale it could be mistaken (by a novice) for new make. Matsui has real potential...and comparing its capturing of Mizunara to Glendalough-13 I think is unfair and almost bordering on category mistake as the Irish whiskey spent 92% of its time in ex-bourbon, whereas the cask interaction of matsui w/ mizunara is exclusive. Apart from this, thanks for the great post

Even beam/suntory etc being the most Japanese yet Glasgow written on the bottle loses its magic a little. English version of laphroaig 10 and buffalo trace watered to 40% made these more average also

Had surprisingly few bad whisky's. Think thats due to all the research I do on KZbin before shopping. However one bottle for me is Revolting and has no redeeming value. 2018 Rassay "While We Wait" is a sourced whisky, peated and unpeated highland malt finished in Tuscan red wine casks. Sounds great right? It was on a closeout for $45 (of course it was on sale it sucks!) so at least I didn't pay that much. Kept trying with it through half the bottle and still could not stand it. Funny Scotch Down Under reviewed it recently and they all liked it so it's all down to personal taste. Cheers Bill

Here's a thought, sir: why not do something Ralfy suggested in one of his videos: create an "Infinity" blend out of these 6 bottles? I know some are whisky, some bourbon (what''s the real difference?) and such but if you're not interested in drinking them anymore but don't want to throw them out why not just combine them into one blend - just for the experiment of it - and try drinking that? You might get lucky and create something really good (or really awful). I think that'd be a hoot~! Let us know if you decide to try this

There are several ways to dispose whiskey you hate: 1. Give away to your friends who don't give af and drink everything that burns. 2. Use it for cooking. 3. My favorite: if you like peat, just get the cheapest heavily peated whiskey like Laphroaig Select or Ardbeg Wee Beastie and mix it one to one. From experience making a fancy concoction even from good whiskeys fails 9 times out of 10. I always end up just 'peating' up my infinity bottles.

@Turbinelife87

No, whiskey actually loses alcohol content the longer it sets in the bottle, especially if its been opened due to the excess air in the bottle. The only way for it to get better with age is to stay in the barrel because its taking flavor from the wood. Glass has no flavor to add. Hope this helps.

@@Turbinelife87 I should have been more clear with my question. Some whiskey mellows out after it’s been open. Mine is Kentucky Owl Takumi Edition. It smells so damn amazing. Delicate fruits like pears, apples, and banana. Maybe but tasting it there is no fruit at all. In fact, all I taste is barrel char. I made an old fashioned and the char even overpowered my old fashioned. Now I mix it 50/50 with 15 year Dickel and the sweet vitamin flavor (which I like) knocks the char down to a tolerable amount.

In order: 1. Jim Beam Single Barrel. Holy $h!7 was this a bad whiskey. It was all the worst parts of Jim Beam turned up to 11. This became exclusively a cocktail bottle to get it off my shelf quickly. 2.Angel's Envy. Everyone talked about how great it was and it was awful. Wife and I both hated it. Weird bitter note (not barrel tannin bitter, think more like chemical bitter) that ruined the rest of what was a pretty bog-standard bourbon. It would have been completely unremarkable except for that strange bitter note. I was so, so thankful I got it at Costco and didn't pay full price for it. Ended up using it almost exclusively in coffee to help bury the off-putting flavors. 3. Jefferson's Ocean Voyage 24. Vorage 23 was pretty good, if a little unremarkable given the price, but especially in an A-B comparison with more traditional bourbons the Voyage 23 had some very clear briny notes and other flavors that set it apart. But the 24 just isn't good at any price. 4. I didn't buy it with my own money, but the Breckenridge bourbon. I get more interesting flavors out of an $18 bottle of Evan Williams BiB than anything I got out of the $60 bottle of Breckenridge. Not a BAD whiskey, but not even close to worth the price. 5. Redemption Bourbon and Rye. Just completely uninteresting MGP products. I've had good MGP whiskies. These are not in that group. Also, as you guessed in your video, I have to take issue with the 1792 BiB being on your list. I found it to have a lot of leathery, earthy, and woody notes in it that I really enjoyed, with not a lot of the traditional sweet bourbon characteristics. Their full proof is good, the small batch is ok, and the sweet wheat is meh. But I love the unique flavor profile of the BiB. It's so unlike most other bourbons, which I really appreciate. Haven't seen it on a shelf here in months which makes me sad, but it's on my list of "Buy it when I see it."

Mizunara - 'a fairly old' means around 200 years old ))) I don't regret buying, but rather here's my bitter disappointment list: 1. Glenmorangie D'or. I had Sauternes wine, it was truly the nectar of gods, but whiskey was more burn and alcohol than taste. Perhaps my expectations were just too high. 2. Hyde No 5 The Aras Cask. It's just pure nail polish on a nose and a palate. You'll be better off with vodka. I don't even dare to try any other of their products. 3. Robert Burns Single Malt from Arran. It may taste relatively OK, but holy crap! We didn't even finish the bottle with my friend and we both had one of the worst hangovers ever. It's like Arran didn't wanna all the heads and tales from the good stuff go to waste. The bottle was purchased from a reputable source tho and it doesn't make sense to make a crappy copy of such unpopular and mostly unknown whiskey that even if someone's gonna buy it, it'll be a once in a lifetime experience. Didn't even get buzzed. Never again. 4. Fujimi - just a fancy overpriced mixer. 5. This one is seriously unfortunate coz I love peat. I'm not a whiskey expert by any means, that's probably why Ardbeg Uigedail and Corryvreckan as well as Talisker Dark Storm felt like just a stronger versions of a standard 10 year old, but for a significantly higher price. They are fine peat-bombs by any means, but I expected a little more. Perhaps I'm just spoiled by Octomore, coz that thing is just.. can't really put it into words. Avoided regrets: I bought a shot of Macallan 12 in a bar and happy that I didn't spent 60+ eur on a whole bottle.

I had a few... Maker's Mark was meh! Dalmore 12 and Balvenie Double wood was meh and also overpriced here in Finland. Don't get me wrong, these are fine whiskies but for me a bit dull at the price. Glendalough double barrel had a weird palate at first (like burnt clutch) but when the bottle got older it openned really nice to be that sweet single pot triple stilled irish doing nothing more what Jameson wouldn't do about 10€ less/bottle. I have to admit that many whiskies came dull to me after Lagavulin 16 but some are also bit too harsh for me like Ardbeg ten and those two octomores I've tasted. I have high hopes for Port Charlotte 10 and Ardbeg Uigeadail. Peace and love.

I've had a few disappointments and stinkers, but none that have cost much so far. I'll start with Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky, terrible stuff, even as a mixer you need to literally drown it or cover it up with bitters to make it palatable. Next up Yamazakura Blended Whisky roughly the same price as Suntory Toki but makes Haig Club seem like an upgrade. Finally for most disappointing; Weller Special Reserve. It's not really bad just bland. Tastes like a very muted or faded Eagle Rare 10. There's just not enough going on to make it a sipper but it does a solid job as a mixer. I paid it $40 CAD which is pretty cheap, but still feel I overpaid. At that price there's so many better options like Elijah Craig Small Batch, Maker's Mark, even Bulleit!
