Whisky Review #20: Springbank 18 Year - 46% | 07.01.20 | This Is Why Springbank Is Special

I was disappointed in my latest Springbank 18. 7/10. The first bottle I had was delicious. I am a huge fan of Springbank. My favourite scotch is peated Islay but I love exploring all scotch - good scotch! I paid $265 before tax for the first bottle and $275 before tax for the second bottle in Canada - always more here. We would never see Springbank as cheap as it can be found in the U,.S. The 46% ABV left me feeling both bottles were a bit thin. I wish the ABV was higher. Great show! I am currently hunting for outstanding old Lagavulins!! My family and I will be visiting Campbelltown and Islay in the summer! 3rd trip - excited! Cheers!

As all SBs, the 18 is a very unique whisky amongst its peers. Worth the hype and I usually even buy it if it's not super high abova MSRP. It's just that unique. Same with the Longrows. Like who does 88% bourbon and then 12% port maturation? Just like with Kilkerrans, the wierd small percentages. Definitely a standout! Your exploration into 18yos (whiskies haha) sounds interesting, subbed!

I have the same SB18 as you….while I enjoyed it… I mean the quality is there but I found this and the SB21 a bit light on the pallet with 46% abv. I think the older age SB’s would benefit from a higher abv… even 48-50%. I would score this between a 7-8…. But everyone’s palate is unique. Regardless I am thoroughly enjoying your channel and perspective. Cheers 🥃

Thank you again! I really appreciate the positive feedback. I definitely wouldn't be upset with extra ABV on the older SBs. I tried a 1960s distillate SB at a bar in Chicago (Delilah's) last year and it was shockingly light. Still delicious, but not the experience I was expecting. It's probably why the 12 year CS bottles are so loved, plenty of SB character and enough ABV to really communicate it.

SB18 vs LR18. ???? IMHO that's the only real question from Campbelltown. As an alternative in a most excellent whisky I hope you found a bottle of Aultmore18. (Not really a SB alternative but worth a review)
