I couldn’t move into a house without having checked every attic or extra door. If I wasn’t allowed to see what is behind those doors, I wouldn’t even submit an application. Renters should give inspections as they received when purchased their home.
@magnus1001 Жыл бұрын
I heard a story similar to Story 1 a few years ago. A guy moved into a new rented house and food would come up missing from his kitchen. He lived there alone so he was confused by this. He heard noises from his basement one night and went down to find the guy he rented the house from in his pj's in a room that he had been told not to go into and that was locked but he had no key to. This time the door was wide open and the new renter could see it was full of stuff like a small couch, single bed, mini fridge. The owner confessed that he and his wife needed the rent money the guy was paying but that they were separated and he couldn't afford to stay anywhere else. The renter called the police and when they came he explained the creepy situation. They made the owner leave and the next day the renter moved out. He had told the owner's wife what was going on and that he wasn't comfortable staying in the house anymore. She apologized, scrapped his lease and gave him back his rent and deposit. Creepy.
@pamelameckley5040 Жыл бұрын
He could've just advertised for a roommate or rented out a room if he had nowhere else to go himself. Perhaps he didn't think things through. More likely he did but wanted more money and to be able to steal their food and live in the home for free. Definitely creepy.

Story 1,3: What is it with people refusing to search the houses they live in before buying/renting? It's not difficult to lock doors if you have a head on your shoulders. People can do what they want. Just remember that fear and panic often follow blind carelessness. Story 2: If someone knocks on your door after midnight, there's no intelligent reason to answer the door unarmed. Being a naïve college kid is the only excuse allowed for not knowing tenant/landlord rights, but only at first.
@jacobwagner8984 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's "refusing" to do it. They don't do it because they don't think they need to. This was this persons first home ever, so they didn't have any frame of reference of what to do. You also get it inspected most likely, so the buyer feels like everything's been looked at before they move in.

The first night in our 135 year old house was shocking 😢 my husband got up to use the toilet. When he flushed we heard running footsteps across the ceiling. My husband freaked out and while looking out the windows he saw someone jump off the shed which accessed the attic. They sped off in a car, never to be seen again. Other freaky things happened in that house until we had it blessed.

These, presumably American stories amaze me - the story tellers call the police and the police arrive promptly. I live in England, in my town there is only a (slight) police presence during office hours. Outside of this, the nearest police station is two towns away, it would take at least 20 minutes to get here, with a fast car and no traffic. We are also not permitted to bear arms. If someone broke into my house with intention to harm me, I would be dead long before the police arrived.

I once had a creepy landlord like the one in story 2. He would also just 'pop up at odd times' with a dumb excuse for being there, and would walk up onto my porch and just stand there staring into my house and wouldn't knock until he saw me walk past the door. My niece who was about fifteen at the time said to me, 'Duh, he likes you,' and her observation did seem correct. Every interaction I had with him, he would ask me a question like, 'I just stopped by because the person who lives there before you complained about the bathroom sink water going down slow, so..." And then he'd stand there, staring at me until I assure him that the bathroom sink is draining just fine. And then he'd say something like, "Well, okay, I was just wondering because, uh, well..." and then he'd start the standing and staring again, thus creating an awkwardness between us. I always had to be the one to say, "Well, okay bye Dave; I'll see you on the second when you come for the rent," and even then he'd still just stand there for an additional ten or fifteen awkward seconds, staring. Upon moving into the place he volunteered to allow me to pay only half the security deposit upfront and break the other half up over a two month span. I should not have agreed to that, but for some reason, I did and that was probably why he thought I was so dumb. Anyway the second month there I paid the first of the two increments of the other half of my deposit, so I only had about a hundred left to pay. He came and knocked at my door one day and asked me if I would be interested in cleaning out one of his other houses because a tenant had just moved. He said that it would be a quick way to pay off my deposit. I asked him if I could bring someone along to help, and when he shrugged and stated that it would be fine, I figured nothing could go wrong, especially since the house was only two street over and I was very familiar with the area. When I got to the house and opened the door, it was like a filthy hoarder had lived there. It took me all day to clean the place and I had to scrub a bathtub and an oven that looked as thought they had never been cleaned before. When I was done, I called the landlord to let him know that I was done and it was around five in the evening. He showed up at my house at ten that evening and said, "Oh, so you finished the job?" and I confirmed that I had, then he said, "Do you need more work?" and I told him that I was just hired someplace else and he looked disappointed. He stared for about ten seconds then asked if I'd be able to pay him the rest of the deposit on the second of the month. I reminded him that he told me that if I cleaned the apartment, the debt would be considered paid. He looked me right in my face and told me that we'd agreed that it would pay only part of the debt. I quite naturally asked him how much he'd given me credit for, to which he audaciously replied thirty-five dollars. I still owed a hundred dollars. I didn't argue, I just rolled my eyes and said I had to go. In case you're wondering, I didn't give him $#!T else - I stood him up for the last month rent and moved out during the night. That was probably dirty of me, but I can't help but to feel that he punished me for not picking up on his advances by cheating me out of the money that I'd slaved for and then going back on his word. ...And the bad part was that he wasn't a bad looking guy, tall and slender with an athletic built, well dressed with dark hair and eyes and conservative wire framed glasses. ...But he was just socially awkward and creepy as hell!
