Back in the early 90s, British anthropologist *Dr. Robin Dunbar* came to an interesting conclusion: humans could likely only maintain social relationships with an average of 148 individuals due to the size of our brain's *neocortex,* or what's known as *Dunbar's Number.* Due to the demands of social information-processing, it requires more cognitive resources, & we only have so much brain power. Basically, we tend to top out at having 150 meaningful relationships in our lives - whether they are family, friends, or casual acquaintances. Later on, Dunbar's research led to the concept of *Dunbar's Layers,* where the emotional closeness between individuals was taken into account. This meant that your relationships looked more like layers instead of a cloud of 150 people. The closest layer has *3 to 5* people, the next layer has *15* people, then *50,* & so on. That inner layer is what makes up your *"vital friendships",* or your inner circle of close friends. These are the people that you should have in your life to meet up with regularly, talk about personal matters, & maintain a strong emotional connection. In the show *_Friends,_* each main character: Ross, Rachel, Joey, Pheobe, Monica, & Chandler - has five people in their life, making it a pretty decent model to follow on a biological & sociological level. If you can manage to maintain three-five close friendships in the same way, you're far more likely to be happy & content. After all, who wouldn't be better off with people who will always be there for you? Do we absolutely need three to five friends to get by? Probably not, but you do need at least one. Isolation & loneliness is responsible for a large number of people feeling depressed & lacking companionship - especially, as we get older. Therefore, it's absolutely vital you hold onto at least one BFF. Friends make you happy, healthy, & they'll be there for you when things start to go pear shaped. Just remember, to make & keep friends, you need to be there for them too. I guess the show _Friends_ had the science all figured out long before any of us were even aware of it.

Ozley, I know what it is to be introverted, but for me it is for protection because I am an empathic person which means I feel and read people's emotions without trying to do it. Imagine hearing multiple covers at ions all at once when you enter a room. I used to have to leave parties and gatherings soon after I arrived because I was overwhelmed by all the things I was picking up emotionally. That's why I am chaplain rather a pastor of a church. I like these intros you do because I can read past facades. Keep up your wrestling with the complexity of life. xoxo

The depth and degree of your topics is impressive, Ozley, you're really giving viewers more therapy than just ASMR alone. It's funny, as an introvert, you seem really open to your audience, in regards to self-reflection and being honest with oneself. I appreciate and admire that. It's true what they say, still waters run deep. And thank you for your illumination on introverts, as one myself, I find it hard to put that into words sometimes. You said it very eloquently. With us, even though it feels like it takes so much energy to maintain relationships, that doesn't mean we don't care about people. Oh, and... Ozley? It just isn't possible for one to see and hear you, even once, and simply forget you. You leave quite the impression on one, friend. :)

I talk a lot and laugh a lot too and am very introverted. Some of it may be nervousness but definitely not all of it . I forget names sometimes too while I am being introduced. My theory is that I’m trying so hard to pay attention and not act socially awkward and act accordingly and attempt to make eye contact and make small talk if they are, which I hate. All my overthinking and anxiousness during an interaction can make me not get the name even though I usually have a really good long term memory but I often misplace my glasses, my debit card , my brush since I was a kid and especially my phone, it’s ridiculous. Anyway, the video made me think and I liked your thoughts on these. The thing about memories changing and how you want to see them/how you want them to align totally makes sense to me. I’m gonna wrap this novel up 😳wish I’d known a long ago that those nagging whispers in my gut were actually red flags. I dug this video:)

18:46 that's a deceiving fact cause "lazy" is a negative term of course but in this context it insinuates a person who's satisfied with current circumstances in contrast to a person who's not satisfied with current circumstances. So in layman's; people who are satisfied are more happy, and don't work as hard. Which goes without saying....

I'm too tired to necessarily word this comment as well as I normally would, but I'm going to say it anyway: Even if there was no Bible verse below the video description, and even if Ozley never explicitly mentioned it; I'd still know that she was a Christian ✝️. I mean, of course I couldn't be 100% sure, but I'd strongly suspect it. Having said that, I don't mean to imply that only Christians ✝️ are capable of being as nice as Ozley. One example that comes to mind is Rachel Oates - who's an atheist, but who's incredibly gracious and kindhearted (similar to Ozley). What I can say with certainty is that very few KZbin vloggers are anything like Ozley or Rachel. Oh, btw - excellent video Ozley. It didn't have the usual ASMR triggers, but it was absolutely fascinating. 👌

The one about 150 people relates to the sizes of human tribal populations. Even in tribes, people still only maintain a small number of friendships, so you're not weird for that. But if our community is less than ~150 people, we can keep track of who they all are and what their relationship is to us and to others in the tribe.

I've often heard that you can know about 150 to 200 people. As in, you can remember or acknowledge them as people you know personally. From family members, to work collegues or acuaintences and neighbours. Its not the same as maintaining over 150 relationships at the same time. I hope it makes sense. I would not worry about it Ozley, because true relationships are few and thats something that we all share.

Dunbar's number is sometimes called the "monkey sphere". This number changes in primates in accordance with the size of the average brain for that species. I remember first reading about this on the old website Something Awful.

10:39 I'm very bad at remembering peoples names as well. I believe it is because I'm so absorbed in hearing them and finding out who they are that I have little attention left for remembering their name. People love to be called by their name, you'd think I'd be better at it. :/

@@OzleyASMR I would recommend this, too. Many times I have written a message to someone, and just before sending it realised that I actually already felt better, deleted the whole thing and avoided a messy situation! I think it's a great short-term solution. Thanks for the comment, Slim :)
