Whitby Storm No Name.... Im not sure why some weather gets a name and some doesn't, but in terms of stormy days at Whitby, Friday 24th Nov 2023 Was probably the roughest sea of the year to date. Yet no name was given ??

I remember an amazing storm we enjoyed in Whitby, when standing in Argument Alley and my wifes hood was vibrating in the wind. Also on the other side of the river, the sea foam backed up from the beach and the whole of the street was covered in thick, whipped up foam. The wind took your breath away, but the sea was awesome. Great that you didn't spoil it with naff unwanted music. Natural sounds speaks for itself. Great bit of filming, thanks for sharing.👍👍👍

Great video! It's difficult to know in these days of constant weather-fear-porn, if it's actually going to be bad or not - I live in Torbay and if there are tankers sheltering in the bay, then I take the warning seriously, like you said 'The fishermen (sailors) know.'

My Father went all around The World in The Merchant Navy and I remember him telling me that to witness Truly Rough Weather at sea is frightening and has to be seen to be believed.
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 Жыл бұрын
My father was in the Royal Navy during the whole of WW2 and saw service in the Arctic, North & South Atlantic & Indian Oceans. He told me the WORST weather he experienced was in the Bay of Biscay, while on a cruiser accompanying an RN Fleet aircraft carrier, he told me how inbetween wave crests the ENTIRE 30,000 ton carrier would totally disappear from from view only to reappear 10 seconds later with its bow pointing upwards cresting the next wave

@@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 I can well believe that my friend. My Father took part in The North Atlantic Convoys going to Murmansk in Russia, he said the weather during the Winter was just horrendous. He served on Tankers just before he left The Merch and he told me a similar story to what you have just related. In heavy weather, the decks of The Tanker would go completely awash and would rise again, several seconds later and no sooner had it drained and it would be under again. Those men were made of sterner stuff than me I can tell you.

Fantastic dramatic footage Glenn, really brings it home why the sea must be treated with caution and respect. I was frozen and I only went from the house to the car. That little curved wall really does help redirect the waves, even though some of them got the better of it.

You’ve really captured a sense of the power of nature. That sea foam is incredible. I notice you’re filming sensibly, unlike some of those trying to grab a selfie. Those small children near where the waves were coming over gave me a bit of the chills too; they could easily have been knocked off their feet. Stay safe everyone.

Remember storms don't need names they just "are". Giving them names is part of the idea to project the image of "being attacked" by the weather. Those at the "top" gotta keep the youngsters frightened. Great filming and appreciated lack of soundtrack. 👌👌👌

There was a yellow warning for strong winds around Shetland Isles. Winds around Whitby were gusting around 50-60 mph during Friday 24th. Shetland higher than 70mph gusts The winds were caused by a low pressure sitting over Scandinavia, pulling in winds from a northerly direction. The isobars were close together and more so around Shetland.

Lived in Whitby 1975 to 1976. That winter we had the mother of all storms, with the local coastguard station recording winds over 100mph. Many chimney stacks down, and houses around the harbour flooded with water coming up through lavatories and such. Saw people blown over in the street. And no, CO2 was NOTHING to do with it

Great filming, but I can’t believe those people at Whitby putting their children a risk like that. When I was living in Porthleven in the mid 80’s we had regular storms but on one occasion an old couple took a walk along the harbour wall during a storm and were tragically washed into the sea. As a Helicopter Engineer working on Search and Rescue this happened from time to time and was avoidable and senseless, people totally underestimate the power of the ocean.

Fantastic footage wish I was there. I noticed when I was there in September that on the pier by the lighthouse there are a series of gaps in the wall with old pulley wheels. Do you know what there were for, did they have gates there?

LOVE WHITBY! Was my second home growing up. This is some incredible footage but it just chops clips or shots too much for me, especially with dramatic seascapes where shapes and power develops…… would love to see shots like these cover a good 30 seconds at least, clipping it every 2 seconds is a bit off putting for me and it lessens the effect of the amazing camerawork and I jut don’t feel able to absorb anything I’m seeing. But that’s your style and so it should be :)
