Great Video, Steve... thanks for taking us along and love the ole White's, great trucks. The cabs for them were made by an independent company in Ohio, and that cab was also used by Autocar, Western Star, and a couple of other "brands" here in the US. I can't even imagine how Anyone could even think that, you had a series 53 under the hood.... ridiculous!! but it does sound like left hand rotation with a center outlet exhaust manifold... which Really "Screams". personally, If it were mine, I would switch out that manifold and replace it with either a straight back, rear outlet... or a rear / side outlet manifold with the number 6 hole, firing directly into the exhaust pipe..... much deeper and more tolerable exhaust "note" with a nice, deep "bark" to it. Those center outlet manifolds just sound Really "tinny" in comparison to either of the above mentioned Rear outlet manifolds. International COE 4070 Series of the 1970's used the Center Outlet manifolds on the Series 71 V8's, and they to... always sounded very "Tinny" (pronounced - "Tin-ee"), I never liked them.... and I don't understand why more owners of them, never swapped them for any of the Rear outlet manifolds... maybe they never knew they could(??). Many years ago, in my "youth", I drove a big "A" Car 10 wheeler with a 22 yard (water level - plus welded 2ft tall steel side boards) dump box on it and 12:00 X 24.5 rubber (very tall tire), and it had a 6-71 with the exact same, center outlet manifold.... I hated listening to that tinny exhaust all day long.... I talked the boss into replacing it with a rear/side outlet.... MUCH Deeper and Better sounding.... he said it sounded much better and even "more powerful" as well. I can actually, understand how some people who don't really "know" Detroits... would get yours confused with those tinny sounding Series 53's. Thank you, again for the ride.... thoroughly enjoyed it. I love Australia, been there several times, and was about to move there to marry my fiance, up in Blackbutt..... when she suddenly and with No explanation, why... sent me an email(!!), telling me Not to come.... after I had quit my trucking job, took over a year to get all my necessary paperwork in order, and sold nearly everything I owned, including my two vehicles.... and only two days away from my flight to get there. I probably should have gone to AU. anyway.... but, I didn't know Anyone there, except her, her family that was scattered around Qsld, and some of her neighbors that I got along really well with.
@stevesplacedownunder12 күн бұрын
Hi mate thanks for watching. This is a magnificent comment and hard for me to reply to it all. Yes it’s a centre outlet straight down and it certainly does sound that way indeed. I haven’t get a rear outlet one here to try but would certainly be keen to do so. I actually have a 4070 right next to it in the shed with an 871 and has the centre outlet manifolds on it too, along with a DCF Transtar 400 with the same manifolds on it too. They are actually both very quiet. I have 2 cabover Kenworth trucks with 871s in them and they both have rear outlets on the manifolds and they sound a lot better than both of the transtars. It’s a shame you didn’t get to come over and live here. It’s a beautiful country, just the way it’s run and cost of living at the moment is right out of control

@@stevesplacedownunder.... as I explained in my comment at the top a few minutes ago (1.13.2025)... if you could change out your center outlet manifold for a rear or, rear/side outlet... you would "lose" all that tinny exhaust sound and replace it with a much nicer sounding, Deep throated exhaust note and would be much easier on your... and everyone else's, ears.

As I get older I start missing the old iron. Sure, the new stuff is fancy, efficient, quiet and rides nice; but it's not engaging to me. Howdy Steve! re the sticky range changer linkage - when I was a kid working in the highway truck stop's fuel desk, in winter we had some sticky linkages to deal with. Several drivers would come in for fuel, oil check, and windshield washes and ask us to get under and douse their range changer linkages with ATF to keep the ice, water, and road salt off them. The story was that these linkages were made with tighter fits than many of the other linkages on the trucks and were prone to get stuck in the cold weather. I recall one White, an Autocar, and a bunch of Ford 9000's where the drivers asked us to do it, but memory of details stuff 45 odd years ago is gettin vague. Maybe your linkage got a bit of rust on it from the time sitting. The White was singin pretty nice at 23:00 ish. The fire truck must have been going to a Tesla fire. 8^) Shame about your buddy's farm being turned into houses, looks like a gorgeous spot. Too much of that going on here too. Thanks for a great video Steve! Cheers.

Thanks for taking us along for the ride ... very therapeutic. Love the old overdrive box. Takes me back to the 3070C with the 903. It's a lot more hilly over in NZ and 295 hp meant deep got a fair workout. From memory, I think downshift was intermediate 3rd to deep 5 and upshift was deep 4 to intermediate 5th which was like a half gear 🤔
@stevesplacedownunder16 күн бұрын
Hi Jimmy thanks for watching. My pleasure mate. Yes they aren’t really a 15 speed, there’s probably 12-13 useable gears, the rest overlap. The beauty of the inters, like the 3070, they had both valves on the stick so it was a nice change from deep to intermediate. The Kenworths and the White I have, deep is on the dash and it’s not a comfortable smooth change so you tend not to use it. Later model ones had the later knob with the valves in them. Like you said with the hilly regions, you need deep for the lower gears. Ones I have you go out of 4th deep, flick the valve and go back into 4th intermediate from memory. So only really adding one gear. Something like that. I need to be doing it to explain it🤣🤣. 903s are beautiful to change

Hi Steve, liked the bit when you said keeping the noise down though the houses, years ago there was a company that had v8 Scania trucks with stacks and had to come up a hill into the town near by, boy did they sound good pulling uphill fully loaded at 44tons, sadly the company got other work or something and took stacks off 😢. Keep on trucking, markUK

Hi Mark. That’s great. They certainly do sound good those v8 Scania trucks. We have them here also and they certainly stand out. All the best from Sydney mate

Steve, once again when you left I felt I was sitting right along in there and the first little stretch even looked vaguely familiar. Next time I’m there you have to go pick something up even if you don’t need it just so I can go along for the ride.

426 cubic inches of screaming 2 stroke wonder. Wonder when you're going to get to the top of the mountain. Joke at our place about 671s. They convert diesel fuel into noise with a small byproduct of power. It did not matter what engine was under the hood on a White 4000. They were loud, hot, and noisy. Having a 238 they were louder. The one I had was equipped with White's velvet ride rear suspension. I hauled milk into NYC with it. Always grossed out. Too small of an engine and a 10 spd. for that weight. Then I got one of the White 9000 with a Cummins Super 250 with a 13spd. with Hendrickson suspension What a difference.

Just watched the whole video with my headphones on. Awesome! Love the sound of a Detroit Diesel on song. The gear change looks mind blowing though. Maybe you could include an explanation of the selector operation in a future driving video?
@Romans--bo7br12 күн бұрын
petesparks18..... it's essentially just a 10 spd, with an extra deep reduction (valve control on the dash).... very simple dbl "H" pattern - including 1st and reverse.

Drove a LNT 350 Louisville in the early 80s that deep reduction was seized from not being used. Similar to what happened to yours. That's a great old truck Steve..
@stevesplacedownunder12 күн бұрын
Hi mate. Yes it is a problem. It’s part of the transmission and should be used but if it’s on the dash it’s not a smooth change so I hardly touch it. Thank you mate. That LNT would of been great too
@rodcole81812 күн бұрын
Yes spot on mate. If it’s on the dash and you never need it, it’s not touched. Only way I knew it wasn’t working was when a bought a load of cotton seed meal to Melb from Narrabri. 1983 it was. The clutch centre went, so no clutch at all. Went to use deep reduction to try and start it in gear from the lights but no joy. Got another guy to unload my trailer, he had hydraulics as I was pulling a ophee convertible. Drove to Kenworth and they replaced the clutch in the Loius. Told the guy there about deep reduction and he said every now and again at a set of lights flick the switch back and forward..😉 They were good old days and being in my early 20s it was an adventure.. Love the work you do at you place Steve. There’s some good gear there that brings back memories. Well done mate.!

@ magnificent story mate. Thanks for sharing. If deep is on the stick aswell it does get used and nice to use at that. I’ve been driving for probably 20 years but not all the time. I’ve been with the same company since I left school in 2000. It’s a quarry company and I’m in the plant maintenance side of it. Field service for many years and now doing all the rebuilds of the earthmovers in the workshop. I like driving but get a bit itchy to pull something apart. I’m glad you like the channel mate and there’s a lot more to come

That’s would be an awesome job mate! Being around that machinery and working on it would help a lot when you turn your hand to your gear at home..🤙 I did my apprenticeship at a Chamberlain / John Deere / New Holland machinery business. It was Ian Davidson Machinery at Cowra. Did one year of my trade after my apprenticeship and left there in 1980 to go truck driving. Dad and mum had a farm halfway between Blayney and Cowra. I loved the machinery side of farming. Not so much the livestock..😉 Keep up the good work with your channel. There’d be plenty of blokes like me that really appreciate what you are doing in preserving some of those old trucks. Looking forward to your next vids..🤙

Would love to see you find a Commer Knocker and get it going ……. it was the very first semi-trailer I remember. As a very, very young boy out in the Mallee of South Australia , our neighbour had one for livestock haulage. I think it was maybe a 1958 model.
