Why I started Jiu Jitsu? During my daughter's the tournament in Feb 2023, I sat sideline video taping my daughter getting crushed, and I had nothing to say, watching her getting destroyed. After as a dad tried to give a pointer on the move but she was pretty upset and said "Dad, you don't know anything", I was going to say something back but realized that she was 1000% correct. I was crushed and made a promised that I will learn. And today going 4 months ... getting crushed every single day, but I did learn alot. Now I roll with her and we develop bonding in Jiu Jitsu.

@@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Nice. Another thing that might be useful in general is something on what BJJ is. I'm past that point now, but when I started I could never find anything good on what it is for someone who doesn't know anything about combat sports. You can hear a lot about the benefits, but to a newcomer it looks like some kind of competitive death yoga. I eventually read books that said as much as "people almost always clench up in fights, then bjj happens..." and "guard is good because you control their weight and direction" etc. But I never saw a good informed video on BJJ from 30,000 ft.

Started my journey in 2014 after almost 17 years incarcerated. I originally started to keep myself out of trouble and after being quickly humbled by what I called nerd assassins at the time I fell in love with the intricacies that bjj had to offer and the pure beauty of watching true practitioners flow through moves that I couldn’t even believe a body was capable of. I train 3-5 times a week still and love it today just as much if not more than I did back then. Thanks for the tutelage and the way you go about instructing. Much respect. OSS

I started BJJ to get fit/lose weight, and also because I wanted to learn to defend myself. Now it's evolved to become something that helps prepare me mentally--to face life and deal with my anxiety and depression. I've been drawing life lessons from rolling in BJJ and applying it to other places in life, because that's what BJJ is: it's a microcosm of the difficulty we face in life. I've learned to keep showing up in life even when I don't feel like (just keep coming back and rolling); I've learned that failing is an opportunity to learn, and there's no shame in it (tap quick and tap often); I've learned to face adversity, even when it's scary (the fact that we actively roll against someone that's resisting us, and I try to seek the bigger tougher people to test myself). It's been great. I've only been doing it about a year, and I hope to keep going until I can't any longer.

This is a great format for videos that I rarely see. There's loads of people putting up technique videos but what you don't get to see is all the stuff that leads up to making a technique work or not. Also - what's the point in a flashy move if it's totally low percentage and there's a million little things that need to happen to make it successful? Breaking down rolls like this helps you see these little details - when to go for something - when not to - what decisions to make and when etc... Thanks! Really appreciate it.

Really enjoying your content and channel, Jordan! I started BJJ because while I've always been active and enjoy physical fitness, I was both bored with traditional workouts, and simultaneously recognized a need to be more social. I'm pretty introverted and can stay at home for days and not see or talk to anyone, easy. I know that's not exactly healthy and thought this would be a good way to address that. I got three classes in and then the pandemic hit- talk about timing! Now, at 44, I wish I would have started so much earlier. I'm having a blast and meeting a bunch of cool people.

Thanks so much for this video and it has drawn me to further explore your others...much appreciated for sharing your knowledge. My story-- wrestled in the Navy and attained a brown belt in judo about 20 years ago. But, I fell out of martial arts until I rolled into a jiu jitsu studio here in my adopted home, Tokyo, about a year ago. I'm now 51 and sore most days :>) I really appreciated a few pearls in this video, but especially to keep in mind that one arm in and one arm out is "triangle city" and the idea to maintain grips more thoughtfully (in fact, that some grips are sorta useless, and even counterproductive, is really enlightening...something i've never really considered). Again, thanks so much for your sharing and hope our paths cross one of these years...Pura Vida!

He said in exchange I will need to train BJJ with him. At 44 I had never trained any martial arts but tried it any way. He trained with me for about a month, submitted me once and then he quit BJJ. He didn’t ski with me either! Despite getting my butt kicked continuously that first year - I refused to quit. Started because i hate who i’ve become in life, and the choices I’ve made all because of the void in my psyche from parents who were abused themselves and never overcame their own demons. Therefore never knew how to teach much of anything. No one is coming to save me, so i must do it myself. A blessing and a curse. “…Seek nothing outside of yourself”. Jocko Willink, David Goggins, Jordan Petersen, Bob Proctor, Dr Eric Thomas have become the only mentors I’ve ever had. Tired of feeling worthless, unwanted, unstable, alone, confused. And this all pushes me everyday to fail often, and profit from my mistakes. A young man trying to find his place in life. Not a pity party. We all must understand ourselves. My path is my path and i wouldnt change it for anything. GET AFTER IT, AND GETCHA PULL!!!!

Love this style of video + the editing, really great. I've been dealing with a 'popped' rib or torn abdominal/intercostal muscle for around 2 months now. I'm currently taking a break from class because it gets significantly worse every time I attend. I've been doing breathing exercises daily, still going to the gym as well as doing other stretches + yoga sessions to try and keep active but the pain won't subside. Do you have any advice or previous experience with this type of injury?

Great video, my first time coming across you on KZbin. Took up BJJ hm….. 10yrs ago or more due to a back injury I got playing rugby and I was told Work on my core and asked about doing yoga or Pilates. Not for me so my friend told me about BJJ and that would work on my core. I trained BJJ during off season and it worked wonders furthermore my performance playing rugby increased twofold plus! I’ve really started training regularly the last 3yrs or so (COVID didn’t help). But I do really love it especially since I’ve retired from rugby I love the physicality of it and the hard training even at my age (mid 40) from a purple belt (journey man ha….) Man, I love your videos. Even as a fellow black belt I find them insightful and almost always take something away from these! I started Jiu-Jitsu after watching the show 'Fight Quest' back in college (2005-2006 ish) and the episode where they went to brazil and the Navy seal got choked unconscious by a small blue belt had me sold. It wasn't until 2009 when I finally took my first class. The move "Never Back Down" was the catalyst for me finding an academy, just sitting on my ass and watching TV and this movie reminded me that I wanted to train BJJ. Corny but that's my story. Now I'll be a first degree next month

Awesome! I started BJJ the first time 10 years ago because I love the chess game & self-defense aspect. Got hooked on techniques that I learned in the Army & watching Gracie in the UFC. I had to quit due to a divorce and couldn't afford my dues and time commitment. Now, I'm starting it up again alongside Muay Thai & weight training because I remarried & got fat, domesticated & old. I miss being addicted to something healthy & feeling like I could handle myself if needed. So I'm doing a "frame off" restoration and building my mind & body all over. Love the knowledge you share.
