When I was 14, I made the mistake to talking back to my dad after he said "No." He grabbed me by my throat, lifted me off the ground, and pinned me against the wall. In his most calm voice, he said, "Son, as long as you are black, don't you ever talk back to me". He had to loosen his grip so I could answer "yessir". My uncles were there and they said was, "damn nephew, you fucked up didn't you".

I'm black and my mother was raised in a small Kansas town, very educated and proper. She never spanked us. My father grew up in Chicago, star athlete in HS, Marine Reserve, college educated, police officer. He would spank us with a huge thick belt but not often. ONLY when we were being disrespectful, disobedient or talking back to my mother. Because of him, we treated our mother like gold all our lives. My parents had 7 childre (6 girls, 1 boy) and all of us are college educated and hard working people.

Disclaimer, this is long: All I can say is "Facts, bruh!". I'm an Army Brat and youngest out of 6 and my fam, though primarily Mid Atlantic Roman Catholic Afr. Americans., i'm proud to also say my fam was like it's own mini U.N. with Jewish, British/Church of England (that was my husband), German, Korean, Muslim, Polish, Puerto Rican & Austrian. That said, my parents both doled out the discipline & attitude adjustments in public & private. There was none of that "Wait 'til your father gets home" jazz. Mary took care of business whether dad (Bernard) was stateside or serving in the Korean War or pulling 5 tours with 101st Airborne in Vietnam while we were stationed either in Ft. Campbell (where I was born and all my siblings were mid teens to 20yrs old at that time), in Maryland, if Washington state, or in Germany (which I consider home in a way). I wasn't a bad kid, not even mischievous. The worst I could do is talk under my breath, or foolishly back talk anyone (even out of self defense. go figure). My Mom was known for carrying a belt in her purse and would wield that thing like Indiana Jones. Dad passed in Aug. '97 and mom passed in November 2002; 5 mos. before my husband passed in 2003. I was a young widow. As of typing this all 3 of my brothers and 1 of my two sisters is also deceased. One of the worst I ever got from my parents was when I was about 8 or 9 yrs old. It was bedtime & i was on the steps in our house on post. Dad was out at the NCO Club with his cronies. Anyway, Mom told me to go to bed. I thought that since I was on the 1st landing she'd never see me stick my tongue out at her. She was all the way in the dining room. Wrong! She saw my shadow. on the wall behind me. My Mom was 5'8", plus sized, very pretty with a beautiful voice. But don't test her. I never saw my mother run in my life, but she charged up onto me on the stairs I didn't realize what was happening until she backhanded me across the mouth with her left hand -- and knocked a tooth out! It hit the wooden landing I was then laying on. It all happened so fast i was in shock. Then she used that familiar line, "Don't cry or I'll give you something (else) to cry about so you'd better dry up, girl. You won't stick your tongue out again." To which I then picked up my tooth (thank heavens it was a baby tooth) and didn't put it under my pillow and went straight to bed. "Just because your little friends carryon like they have no manners and respect because they weren't raised right, doesn't give you license to copycat. Remember that." I did remember that. Never forgot it. I couldn't imagine being in the 2nd or 3rd grade trying to explain why I have to wear a partial. Not keen on finding out. All the physical discipline pretty much ceased by the time I was 11 or 12-ish. After that they'd lecture me to death, or give me insane chores. For me that was worse. Just hit me and get it over with. LMAO😂 My Mother wasn't the type to raise her voice [which is actually more jarring] or address anyone by their full name. She found that ridiculous and a silly waste of time and expelled energy. I must admit, I agree. I'm 54 now & over decades since I was a child and was raised middle/upper middle in very diverse communities on Army posts and after dad retired after 31yrs serving, in sub-urban predominantly Caucasian environments incl. schools like northeastern Maryland from the late 1970s well into the 90s 7 or 8 miles from Rising Sun, MD which was once(?) where one of the chapters for the KKK was located (when i finally moved to NYC), I've seen many caucasian kids (a lot whom were my school friends), that would totally act a fool towards or in front of their folks -- and not suffer the consequences of their actions. My Mom and Dad would see it too, roll their eyes and look at me as if to say, "You know better than that, Jenny. Don't you?" Yes, I do and still do. Like I said, it didn't happen often. I can honestly count on one hand how many times I caught their hands, or belt or the dreaded square red hairbrush. Funny thing is that my older siblings told me by the time I was in my 20s, "Ha ha! Mom and Dad "lightened up" by the time you came along! They're softer now, you're lucky. We wore them down for you I guess." Umm... ooookay. LOL! I can laugh about it -- now. 😅 Aries Spears is hilarious! Great choice, guys! He was hysterical on the old sketch comedy show MAD TV on the Fox channel back in the 90s. Good stuff! Peace& Happy New Year gents & everyone.

Lmao!! Oh my god! In third grade my two best friends was a white boy named Darwin and a black boy named Ronald. Ronald was the guy who kept the group laughing. Whilst Darwin was the guy the one that came up with cool and fun things to do. And it usually didn’t take much going. Anyway, Darwin suggested we skip school for a day of fun and adventures, and me and Ronald happily agreed. We spent the morning in an arcade, lunch at Dairy Queen, then G.I Joe at the Army firing range. Thank goodness for us, before they live fire on the range, they send D.I.s down range to check it’s safe. Of course the drill sergeant found us, yanked us out by our ears, then whooped are asses before taking us to school. At the time I didn’t know my moms best friend was our school principal, who whooped my ass and sent me home early. Only to have my grandma ask why I was home so early? Once told the reason, I was commanded to go fetch a switch. I remember thinking, how are you gonna ask me to go fetch something so you could beat my ass?! Lol! So I went and picked out the most flimsiest thing I could find, which of coursed pissed her off enough for her to go out and get a tree! Yes, I got it again! Then I realised two more adults lived here. My grandad and my mom. I thought out of sight out of mind. And as that thought was complete, my grandad walked in and asked the same question my grandma has asked earlier, with the same results. Except he used his belt. My mom didn’t get home from work until half five so I thought I’d go to bed, pretend to be sleep, and pray to god she would let me sleep then tell me off after hearing about all the beatings I’d had during the day. Let me tell you it’s hard to pretend you’re asleep if your dragged out of bed. Needless to say, after that day, I never put a foot out of place again. Attendance was perfect, honour roll every report card. And all my teachers said I was a pleasure to have as a student. Now I didn’t enjoy all the ass whoopings, but I realise my generation had much more respect for teachers, elders, and authorities back then.

My mum was militant 🙆🏾♀️😂 but I'm grateful now cos I've finished law school and work in the finance sector and I'd like to think I'm a well rounded and well adjusted individual. It also gave me something that is hard to quantify which is emotional and mental fortitude which I feel a lot of people my age and lower are lacking now because they never heard 'no' or experienced consequences. So now they can't handle basic level negativity. I found it interesting that you linked special places back then to the safe places rampant now.
