I have 18k white gold rings and platnum rings. I wish I had made all my rings in platnum. They don't wear away the metal shifts, they don't need rodium every year to look correct. They can as mentioned above be polished without loss of material. Stones are more securely held. If you leave has a nice patina. You clean in soap and warm water. I'm not saying it's perfect but it's much easier to live with.

Platinum is the best, but it should always be 90-10 platinum iridium. That’s shiner and whiter than any other metal and it’s much more scratch resistant than the typical 95-5 iridium. That 95-5 iridium is why people think platinum gets a patina so quickly. 95-5 ruthenium is also okay, but it’s not as shiny and white and is harder to work with. It’s also significantly cheaper than the 90-10 so that’s why it’s used by many companies like Tiffany. People may think 90-10 is less pure but if you know about atomic weights, it almost uses the same amount of platinum as the 95-5 ruthenium and looks better. White gold has to keep being re-plated and eventually shows the yellow underneath. It’s a lower quality option that should only be used if people can’t afford the platinum

For our 24th wedding anniversary, my husband bought me a platinum & diamond ring!! I LOVE the weight of the metal!! I’m not fond of the patina, but that can be fixed. I will not purchase another 18k piece of jewelry. (I only have 3 pieces that are 18K & everything else is 14k!! Platinum is incredibly hard to work on. Scratches cannot be buffed out easily and requires more than double the heat of gold to work on. All maintenance and repairs will cost you 2-3x the price of a gold repair.

Also where you bring in your white gold piece for replating vary in price as each jeweler charge you at a difference price depend on the size of the the metal. please learn to use your brain a little.

That tends to be the case with heirloom and family jewelry. If it's 100 years old, it's likely platinum. I think another factor to consider is if you have family plans and want to pass something down - platinum is a major consideration.

Over time, this plating can wear off, revealing the underlying metal. However, because rose gold already has warm undertones due to the copper content, the change in color as the plating wears off is less noticeable compared to white gold.

I like the sheen of rhodium on white gold. If you treat your ring well, you could go your whole life without needing a replating. Getting it replated is not that big a deal. My husbands yellow gold ring has lost its design from wear over the last forty years but mine is still perfect. I did get all the prongs redone at thirty years because it contains a row of baguettes. I don’t like the grayish look of platinum over time and the ring can’t have as fine details.

Different metals they mix it with to get the different colors both will use 18 or 14k or whatever of pure gold. I believe rose gold is mostly copper but there are different recipes for all of them and they all have slightly different properties when it comes to jewelry making but will be similar

Great question! It's all about finding the right balance between density and thickness. When platinum gets slimmed down, it starts to bend easier. For gold, on the other hand, it all depends on what karat of gold it is. What I'm referring to in this video is 14K White Gold, which is mixed in with different alloy to make it sturdier for daily wear. 24K pure gold is actually very soft and not suitable to use as an engagement ring metal. Context, lifestyle, craftsmanship, all these things matter when choosing your metal, stone, etc. I hope this helps!

I actually had a couple of jewelers tell me it was just as durable to get us to spend more $$$ over the years!! That worked when I was in my 20’s, but NOW I’ve lived & learned; it’s 14k or platinum here on out!! lol!!! I take EXTREMELY good care of my jewelry, too!! I work in Medicine, so I only wear a gold band & earrings!! (I’ve gotta have SOME BLING!!) When I work out, I wear silicone, or nothing. I only have 3 pieces of white gold (for about 15yrs each) & they still look new!! Love your work, BTW!! Gorgeous ELEGANCE!!💞

I have several of each & they’ve aged very very well!! I take very good care of my jewelry, but no other dipping has been required. Stick with 14K for durability, though!! I hate my 18K pieces b/c I’ve had to have several bands built back up!! I don’t even wear them frequently! If you have a gorgeous piece that you’ve worked hard for, you want to ENJOY IT!!!😆💞

Here is the hardness of various alloys of gold vs platinum, white gold is hardly harder (no pun intended) when it has to be less than 50% gold lol 24k gold (pure gold): 2.5 - 3 18k white gold (75% gold): 3.5 - 4 14k white gold (58.3% gold): 4 - 4.5 10k white gold (41.7% gold): 4.5 - 5 999 platinum (pure platinum): 4 - 4.5

I love how firm you are on this belief, lol. I actually used to really love rose gold. I still do but I also love the look of “old world” ancient looking heirloom jewelry. I could never figure out why everything in rose gold just didnt give me that look. Then I read, rose gold is relatively new! It was created by carl faberge in the 19th century and didnt really become popular until the 1920’s. Thats why I think when I see it, it never really gives me that ancient look. However! With my skin tone, silver looks better on me than gold. So I always thought I would prefer platinum jewelry. But I started wearing silver promise rings to prepare for my upgrade. And personally I hated that when put next to my friends who have white gold or platinum rings. You cannot tell the difference at all! It looks the same! So now, I dont care if silver or platinum looks better on me. I want gold, lol. Im still on the hunt for a perfect rose gold ring because I prefer the less yellow look and the higher the gold karat weight in rose gold the less copper it looks, so theres that. Also I feel safer wearing my silver pieces when im just out and about because I get nervous wearing nicer pieces on vacay or a big city but thats a long rant to say. Different strokes for different folks 😊
