The other day we went out to get a haircut in NYC’s Chinatown at one of its amazing barber shops. We totally shocked the entire barber shop with our Mandarin and Cantonese! A very funny prank and social experiment but also just a great time in general. Wishing everybody luck in their journey to learn languages, whether that’s Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Spanish, or whatever!

American Born Sure, that’s true...but then rather than make excuses (“well, they’re only good because they just hang around Chinatown all day, but I have a job”), he should just say he doesn’t want to learn. Instead, he wants to act like it’s everything else’s fault instead of his. That’s the mindset of someone who will never improve. At 5:52, the man cutting his hair suggests that he go to Guangzhou to "look to eat." In Cantonese, "looking to eat," doesn't necessarily mean food literally, it's often an expression for looking for work, or looking for a source of income. So he might have been suggesting that they find a job in Guangzhou with their language skills.

But you also have to be willing to have your pants pulled down while everyone laughs and be cool about it if you want to hang, which they also did and participated in (blew my mind, some of that I wouldn't have got away with, even knowing the language). He's a damn good barber. I've done hair for over 30 years and that's exactly how you're supposed to do it. Vanessa, that was my thought exactly. Nowadays in LA you have these tatted up bearded barbers trying to complicate a step cut with all these weird angle cuts and three layered fades and this Chinese dude did it how i was taught forever....old school barber college. The new way is just to turn a $10 haircut into a $30 haircut and make a bunch of odd jump steps to get to the same place.

But the more you look at his videos the more you understand that's it's only about how people can open themselves to you when you show them you spend years of your life trying to learn their own language and culture. he's not happy because he speak well chinese, he is happy because he can see the sparks in the eyes of the people he met when he speak chinese to them.
