Me and my Chinese-speaking white friends went to Brooklyn Chinatown to practice our Mandarin, Cantonese, and the rare dialect of Fuzhounese (also known as Fuzhou dialect or Hokchew / Hock Chew), which people speak in this part of Brooklyn. We got lots of smiles and laughs and funny reactions and it turned into a really fun day! It’s always nice to make connections with people using language skills. An inspiring video for people looking to learn languages, I hope!

Learning Chinese can be fun if you are really game for it. Living in SE Asia makes most non-Chinese being able to speak a smattering of Southern dialects like Guandonghua (Cantonese - spoken in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur) and Fujianhua (Fukienese - spoken in Manila, Singapore and Medan). But nowadays, many can even sing in Putonghua (Mandarin - thanks to videos and karaoke). Best regards.

Milton Holley it would be nice if you followed up your an opinion with some sort of facts to substantiate a claim. I don’t know a whole lot about Nelson Mandela but to empathize with your point I have found mother Theresa to be quite a disgusting human being after reading several of her novels. So I don’t assume he is an entirely good person. The message is what I was sharing. Not an opinion on what I thought about his character. Mother Theresa had a lot of wise sayings but I don’t think much of her as a person. Hopefully this doesn’t sound like an ego thing on my part. But if you don’t understand the message just ask for clarification next time and I’m sure plenty of people would be happy to help you understand the message.
@BradleyTruax7

Milton Holley I appreciate you bringing to my attention what type of person he is. But on the other hand that’s not what this discussion is about. It’s simply about connecting with humans. And investing your own time to learn their native tongue and employ it shows a huge sign of respect and in turn they are very gracious to acknowledge that. So I do appreciate you showing me my ignorance. I just just didn’t want to go down this road in the first place. My use of his words had nothing to do with Nelson Mandela but about humans in general. If I can’t get this through than I don’t know what to tell you. But I appreciate your reply.

@@realeyesrealisereallies97 Well, I would claim that those arbitrary laws aren't too hard to learn. I know how to pronounce tough, thought etc. without ever actively trying to learn it. I just watched movies and videos in english and "accidentally" picked it up. Mandarin on the other hand has a completely different way of saying things (syntax), difficult pronounciation and intonation that could easily lead to misunderstanding and possibly the most complex writing system there is. Though, you could argue that mandarin might be easier than english if your native language is already a language "close" to mandarin. So what do I know.

I often hear my parents talk about how the Fuzhou dialect won’t be around anymore when I grow up, and as much as I don’t want to believe it, I know it’s true. Out of my family, only a hand full of people, including myself, can speak it. Everyone born in 2005 and after can barely understand or cant at all. Familiar with a lot of other languages as well. It’s sad to see these languages become less common, and it’s the unfortunate truth. Xiaoma has motivated me to continue learning Chinese even though I already speak it. You are a great example to many Asian Americans. Thank you for the great content!!

My parents are from Fuzhou, Fujian and as a result, I grew up speaking the dialect at home to my parents and grandparents among other relatives as well. Watching this video put a smile on my face knowing that someone non-native to the culture put effort into learning and immersing himself in our culture. Not only that, you’re pretty much set in NYC if you have the fuzhounese dialect down. Everyone is pretty much from Fuzhou and Guangzhou. So both fuzhounese and Cantonese are very useful. Well done!

Motivation and dedication is probably the biggest issues people have when learning a language. 1. It's far from easy and is going to be very challenging. 2. You are going to want to give up at times or get distracted by other things 3. Practice makes perfect. I recommend books, free videos, and then when you become comfortable with the basics, invest in a more adept program that usually cost money

Anglos who can speak small phrases in another language are not a novelty, but to share and hold a conversation is.
