Honestly I think y'all should just call it "the big ol' leather couch," it's a bit of a compromise. I loved how chaotic Craig made everything after introducing the movie (even if Matt was freaked out).

I was one of those people who said "I think it might be better than the original" about Spielberg's WSS. I saw it Christmas eve at like 10:30 at night and came home literally dancing up the steps. So much of it felt energizing....But, after re-watching it on HBO Max I absolutely agree with Matta and Craig's takes here. I realized that everything I was energized by was everything that wasn't Tony and Maria: America, Officer Krupke, every single scene Mike Faist is in. And when you get over the wonder of those scenes and numbers, it becomes very clear that what should be the heart of the movie is lacking.

Good point on how the last line was meant to deflate Cody's "blaze of glory." This was, after all, the era of the Hays Code, where wrongdoers were always supposed to meet a just punishment for their acts, or redeem themselves, or a combination of the two. (Which necessitated a MAJOR change to Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca.) Cody got killed off in the end, of course, but the Hays Code wouldn't have allowed for his act to look at all glorious or triumphant. (Funny thing is, when Cagney's character in Angels With Dirty Faces got executed, he supposedly died a coward--but since it may have been an act to destroy the young neighborhood kids' faith in him and discourage them from following in his footsteps, it may have been less an attempt to de-glamorize a sinful character than an attempt to redeem him in his last moments of life.)

Craig, I think the thing you "realized" a few minutes in is kind of ironic. You seem to have made the same kind of assumption that the film's characters make: that Bruno has any idea what's going to happen in the future. The joke is that because Bruno can see "the future," people think that everything he says is him giving them knowledge of the future. But Bruno reveals that no, he can see what *could* happen, depending on the paths people decide to take. He wasn't telling Pepa that she was going to make it rain at her wedding, he was observing that she seemed stressed out. That stressed her out more, and she created a hurricane. The lady with the dead fish was probably overfeeding it, the chubby guy was stress eating, the priest was stress balding, etc. Bruno has no idea what will happen for sure, but everyone who knows him assumes the worst because once they think they know the future or once they see that something bad might happen, they make choices that cause the bad predictions to be self-fulfilling. Bruno has to run because he knows that even though his vision only means that Mirabel will be important in whether the family and the encanto flourish or fail, he knows everyone is going to assume it'll be the latter. A thing that's a bit sadly inaccessible in the film is the song "Dos Oruguitas," which talks about how you have to move forward to create your own future, summarizing to some extent the idea of Bruno's gift as well as how the family can work through their traumas to better support one another. Since the song is in Spanish, I can understand folks not realizing what an important song it can be to the movie's themes.

The French Dispatch was also my film of the year. Wish TFD, Shiva Baby, or Spencer had some more nominations. I'm hoping Kristen Stewart & Andrew Garfield win Best Actress & Actor. I think CODA would be a nicer win than Power of the Dog, which I found dull compared to Campion's early classics like The Piano. I recently saw White Heat and loved it. James Cagney is so entertaining and fearsome in White Heat & Angels with Dirty Faces. It reminded me of Paul Muni's Scarface & Angel on My Shoulder. Have you guys seen Angel on My Shoulder? Claude Rains is a delightfully sly Satan and the lovely Anne Baxter is quite touching alongside Paul Muni. Muni himself is hilarious, intimidating, and shocking moving as the romance blooms. A truly beautiful and entertaining forgotten film.

You know you talking about west side really summed up my feelings on the film, and I thought about it and I think the main twos problem might be that Maria didn't have the presence she needed. And now I'm thinking you know Spielberg really doesn't have a lot of strong female leads in his filmography and I was taken aback by this revelation that it probably was a directorial shortcoming.

I'm blown away Matt thinks Will Smith should win. This is an EXACT repeat of his Ali role. He's "doing a voice" and wearing prosthetics. And that. Is. It. He doesn't disappear into the character. Doesn't "transform" or "embody" him. He does a serviceable job by way of an impression. There are even a couple of scenes where he loses even the tenuous thread he has, and becomes "cringey."

Dangit, why'd ya have to go and mention the Oscars? As soon Matt talked about seeing the list of nominees, I paused and went to go see it. Somehow the Academy manages to continue to disappoint my increasingly low expectations. In The Heights virtually nowhere to be seen, the wrong song chosen for Encanto (though that one is actually on Disney and LMM, turns out), and West Side Story nominated for that many things?! I continue to be baffled by the acclaim for Spielberg's adaptation, especially with musicals as massively awesome as ITH and Encanto coming out the same year. From his usual spotlight fetish, to casting someone who looks like a child to play Maria (making me think of his obsession with it being canon that Marion Crane be 14/15 when she had sex with Indie), though Rachel Zegler did a wonderful job with what she was given. The lackluster choreography and cinematography. What feels like direction that forced actors to do a version of Puerto Rican accents that felt very unnatural to them. Paying lip service to evictions of immigrant and poor communities without actually making it an impactful part of the story, instead a background issue that never gets resolved, neither for better nor worse. West Side Story (2021) was far from a bad film, but one of the best of the year? It wasn't even in the top two best musicals about the Latine diaspora/experience this year, in my opinion. Obviously folks will disagree with me on that, but that's where I stand on it. It highlights for me once again the fact that the Academy is mostly made up of voters who have either already been nominated for Oscars before, or must be recommended by two people who are already members. Plus that American films feature Latine people 4% of the time, though we make up 17% of the country's population. It all feels very disheartening.l, especially when you have some years that seem promising, but then we have years like this.

I felt like Encanto was more about the spectacle and the songs and less about story and characters, which was also a problem with Frozen. Hard disagree on your takes regarding the Oscars, an awful awards show (like the majority of them, across industries) that, along with the Grammy's and so many others, need to end. Why? So many reasons. There are a lot of essays (video and print) on the topic. Check them out. The French Dispatch is less than the sum of it's parts - It's a beautiful film, wonderfully acted and technically amazing - and yet... I appreciate this film so much. Much more than I enjoyed it. It wins the award for the film I most wanted to love. Licorice Pizza may be PTA's weakest film, with a lazy script and haphazard construction. Why did it resonate to an award worthy distance with your heart? West Side Story. I'm pleasantly surprised it wasn't a disaster. But why remake it? The film itself: It's good. Best of the year? No. Okay, that's more than enough for a comment. This is just one person's opinion. I happen to have a different take. Nothing like throwing out opinions and offering no substitutes. Yay!
