Silver is a precious metal. Silver and gold are the original coinage metals that date back to 6000 years ago, silver was more expensive than gold in ancient times because its less common as a native metal.

she didn't say it wasn't a precious metal. she said it's not a traditional choice for a wedding or engagement ring. that's because it wears more easily than the other choices, and since you're always wearing wedding rings it's more likely to wear or break than the others.

desertfox xx98 great... that doesn’t refute what i was saying. Silver isn’t a popular choice for wedding rings because they don’t last like other precious metals do. Gold is better, but platinum is probably the best for a lasting ring.

A couple of years later gold prices fell back, I went to a jewelry store to have a ring made. I wanted my birthstone (Aquamarine) and I decided to be different and get the setting in white gold. I thought they mixed silver in with yellow gold to make the white gold ? I'm sure the stone was a synthetic stone. It was very different and people would comment on it, but they thought it was Sterling silver.

John Morris oh hey, KZbin didn't alert me about this! I'm a fan of silver as well. Go to stuller(dot)com, or search for 'continuum Sterling silver' in Google. A good place to go would be the bench Jeweler forums, that way you can learn about it. One bench Jeweler who only uses high karat gold and Platinum, routinely uses Continuum for making eye glass frames. His name is Joe, I believe, and he attests that once heat treated, this stuff has the wear resistance of of the commonly used stuff, including Platinum. I had a ring made of it, and although I have a newer one casted and heat treated by Stuller themselves, the older one still required very little polishing. Just washing your hands routinely (I work in healthcare) will keep any tarnish away!

Silver is the shiniest metal that exists. All real mirrors use silver oxide. Silver is the most electrically conducive metal that exists, and it has antimicrobial properties. The trick to having perfect silver jewelry is to have 925 for the piece, then coat in pure silver because it doesn't tarnish. 925 tarnishes because they use copper to make it harder. Read Wikipedia or the encyclopedia. Thank you for the video, even though you threw silver under the bus.

We're adding a basket setting to hold my center stone on my sterling silver ring and I don't want there to be a noticeable difference between by sterling silver band and my basket setting being soldered to the ring? @@MM5165 I know this is a very old comment but to answer your question, the closest metals to sterling silver would be .935 Argentinium silver which contains more silver and uses germanium instead of copper/nickel to reduce tarnish, or alternatively fine silver which is just .999 pure silver. In terms of completely different metals to silver entirely, platinum looks the most similar to sterling silver though it is very expensive.

I have heard that 19 k white gold can almost be as strong as platinum but doesn't form a patina. The jeweler I spoke with also mentioned that it's alloy will be whiter than 18k gold and that it doesn't require the Rhodium plating to maintain it's colour, making it lower maintenance. I was wondering if you know how the alloy changes to get these traits in 19k white gold, and if the claims of improved properties are fair?

Platinum is only about 10% denser than gold. 21.3g/cc density vs. 19.3g/cc. You're right about it being harder to work with but it's also intrinsically harder and tougher than gold.
@SJWsAttack
@SJWsAttack 7 жыл бұрын
But rings are generally denser because 14k White Gold only contains about 58% gold and the rest is Nickle or other alloys while Platinum rings are usually 95% platinum which is also why the are much more expensive.
@calangel
@calangel 6 жыл бұрын
Once again, Jewelers are spreading that lie about Platinum not losing weight. A long term study published at the Santa Fe Symposium about Platinum shed the truth on this inadvertently. They studied the long term wear resistance of Platinum alloys, and the found that the alloys with the highest wear resistance were overwhelming the harder ones. Go figure. Also, one of the participant's rings was a 18KY/Plat inlay ring, and the microscopic pictures show how much more scratched and beat up the Platinum was. White gold and even yellow gold alloys are harder than Platinum Here's some additional info. They have silver alloys now that are harder than any but the most niche Platinum Platinum alloy like S2. Continuum, by Stuller, is the silver. You should use it. The real reasons so many people's Platinum jewelry lasts longer are that because of the cost and esteem afforded Platinum, people take better care of it. They're hard on gold, and even harder on silver. Also, metal preserving polishing techniques like burnishing are used on Platinum and seldom if ever on gold.
