One big difference between White Oak Trees and Red Oak Trees explains why most nurseries prefer to grow Red Oak Trees.
The White Oak group generally tends to have a deep taproot as a youngster. This makes them very hard to transplant, which means that most nurseries don’t carry them. As a very young plant, it is possible to plant one of these trees and get reasonable success but considering how slowly they grow, most customers would not be interested in purchasing a foot-tall specimen knowing that they will have shuffled off from this mortal coil long before the tree reached a height to hang a swing from.
The Red Oak group on the other hand is somewhat more fibrous rooted, with a facility of transplanting ease that make them much more available in the nursery trade.
In addition there is a world of scrub, evergreen and other types of Oaks, but generally in our climate, the White and the Red Oak groups are the dominant types.
The White Oaks generally offer up leaves that are rounded in shape, whilst theRed Oaks have pointed leaf lobes (although the Willow Oak leaves might be an exception). The White Oaks make for better fire wood, as their cell structure tends to be tighter, more closed hence more dense wood. They are slower growing, they don’t have
as good a fall color and they are excellent forage for deer, squirrels and other wildlife.
Grown best in full sun to partial shade, forgiving as to soil except for totally waterlogged.
White Oak is the state tree of Connecticut, Illinois, and Maryland.

Urban development is killing this tree at an alarming pace. This tree should be protected at all costs.

Urban Devolvement is killing every kind of tree. White oak is pretty abundant in West Virginia, and Kentucky in the wild.

Modern urban development is for the best interest of the developers, builders, contractors, realtors, bankers, and business men involved: aka- those who profit$ are the only ones who profit in general. I live in Philly, and it’s sad to be walking down this beautiful side street with all the gorgeous colonial town homes and trinity houses, than walk out and see over crowded street parking, trees that are dying from the tight side walks and poor drainage, and ugly architecture. The state of our modern country is sickening and would make our founding fathers go mad. Fuck the Red coats let’s revolt against the Green coats!

After watching more red oaks die this year that I ever have, I hope that white oaks continue to dodge bullet when it comes to whatever new pest or disease shows up next to ravage North American trees.

that selection for red/white oaks is only for american oaks. In Europe you have many types of Oaks.

Great idea! Since we are based in New Haven, CT which is called "The Elm City" we definitely need to add that to our short list. Thanks for the request, and thanks for watching!

Thanks! I found an American Elm in my mother's backyard growing in a pot. When I found a place to plant it, it shot up twenty feet in two years! I love the vase shape of the tree. I wish there were more around here in Queens, NY.
