Bought Surrealistic Pillow when it came out in 1967 - and played it over and over…especially White Rabbit and Somebody to Love. I grew up in Southern California as a teenager in the ‘60’s and saw quite a number of bands, including the Airplane. Great time to be a teenager.

Area … she say you gotta come down here and listen to this girl… my friend let me in the back … got me a beer … I was only 18 in 1965 when I graduated… yep it was Grace Slick … before she hooked up with the JA group … I got drafted out of college in 1967 … Army 1cav 11B infantry… AFVN … the Armed Forces Vietnam Network … we didn’t hear or listen to much radio out in the field, but back in the rear on LZ Sharon up north I heard this tune for the first time … smoke it 🚬 🤪

@@donburnett8594 Yeah, 1965, she would have been just beginning to sing with The Great Society (the band she helped form with her then-husband Jerry Slick and his brother Darby- who wrote Somebody to Love). She was so lovely and as we’ve said before : incredible voice.

Fun fact: Disney's Alice In Wonderland had its first theatrical re-release in 1974 (previously, it had only been shown on TV--it hadn't been much of a moneymaker when it first came out). Before this, a 1968 re-release of Fantasia had found an audience among a college-aged crowd who--how do I put this?--appreciated the movie from an entirely different level. (There was a very psychedelic poster for that re-release.) Disney played that sort of connection up for this movie as well in 1974, designing a similarly psychedelic poster for it and releasing print ads with the tagline: "Is this movie any fun? Go ask Alice."

I'm more than willing to agree with you on that, knowing myself how often an artist's work can be misinterpreted. But people will inevitably interpret art how they see fit and Wonderland has always been connected with drugs within the public conciousness, even though itself is more akin to a dream than an acid trip. People tend to make things darker than they're supposed to be.

not possibly. Its was about a drug called L.S.D. Ppl used to take it bcuz they felt it enlightened them but they were just experiencing hallucinations. None of what they were seeing was real. The pills making you small and large are referring to stimulants and depressants, aka high and low. You think this song "possibly" is about drugs? Come on now, of course it is, thats guaranteed.. This song ISN'T about doing drugs or the vietnam war. It's called White Rabbit. It's about Alice In Wonderland. If you know anything about Alice In Wonderland you would know that the White Rabbit is a symbol for curiosity for Alice. Grace felt the same way at that time in her life. She said so herself.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a unique coming of age story about a young girl coming to terms with her oncoming adulthood and changing identity, but it’s also about following a white rabbit around a crazy world, with occasional appearances by a striped cat. The film is similar, but different, taking cues from the book even as it chooses to go its own way. Gather up your magic mushrooms, we’re going to follow the white rabbit and find all the differences we can! Did you Read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland? Have you seen the Disney animated film recently? What did you think of the more recent live-action Alice in Wonderland; and are you looking forward to the upcoming sequel, Through the Looking Glass? What other works would you like to see us explore on What’s The Difference?

flying potato it didn't you idiot LSD was made on November 16th 1938 ; whereas the original book came out in 1865, however magic mushrooms have been used for hundreds of years, but didn't get widespread popularity until the magazine article seeking the magic mushroom (in 1957) which didn't come out until after this movie, but to be fair the movie could be in part inspired by hallucinogenics and it seems like the original book may have been inspired by hallucinogenics; just not LSD.
