I just shot my 2023 buck and sent it to get TRW. DNr aged it at 7-8 years old. Then I sent it to lab to get tested and cementum aluni done. It came back at 9.5 years old. Got a certificate from it!

We in the Uk who attend the British Deer Stalkers courses study the "Cohort Analysis", there is another for Fallow deer called "The Hoffman Pyramid", both are quite hard to study but will give you results.

If a deer is harvested in February, he is not a year and a half old but actually closer to a year and three quarters old. Good stuff there I didn't have a clue how to age a deer. thanks

Shot a doe on my 9 in 2013. Her teeth in the back had come in but where allmost completly ground away.

Reminded me of an incident. Where I hunt often the government is asking for a "mandatory tooth send in" so they can determine the age of the animal. One time 2 hunters each shot a moose. One sent his in and the other forgot to do it and disposed of the head. His partner reminded him of it, but it was too late. So, the second fellow cut out a tooth from the same jaw and sent it it. The results were nothing short of a miracle. The first tooth was 4 years old and the second 11. Go figure!

I think so. They are starting to think muleys arose from blacktails breeding with whitetails when the ice age ended. I think I've seen videos where they talk about it.

Yeah that makes no sense. Why does a mule deer have a rope tail and not like the whitetail or black tail? Also we know that hybrids do not ever survive well so how would an entire species of hybrids survive and breed when usually hybrids are sterile?why would mule deer hop when both other deer run? I call bull on the whole theory!

Portugal Outdoors theres honestly no real way to know the exact age of any animal unless you watch it grow from birth.
