Bought a tilt bed trailer last month. Loaded up the tractor to see how it towed. I was driving by a tire shop and told my wife I going to stop and have them check pressure and torque the lug nuts. She kinda rolled her eyes because it was a new trailer. When the technician was checking the torque, he found a few nuts finger tight and many that moved a full turn. So glad I turned into that tire shop.

I had a new Massey 2615, and the bolts from the engine to the transmission loosened up and I caught it at my 50hr oil change. I checked them after 10 hrs and they where loose again. Put some lock tight on the bolts and never had a problem again. But now I check my bolts on a regular basis. Good video Mike hopefully you saved someone a big repair bill

thanks for reminder Mike ! i am not some big farmer and only care for my 2 acre country lot ,but over the years I've seen many a thing loosen up on the small tractors i use from a old cub to my wheelhorses but here|s one for you , bought a new Deere 1025 in 17 after about 10 hrs i noticed it was overheating according to temp gauge ,this would cause a panic and i would check radiator oil etc couldn't understand it was ready to have dealer come and pick it up , so one day i decided my life has taught me look for the simple first ( 2nd gen electrician lol) so upon inspection i found the main ground strap was never tightened ! i tightened it and the gauge never read hot again

Good advice! A few years ago, I was running my John Deere G down a highway and the entire front end seemed to be twisting or rocking. It rurned out that the bolts that held the front frame to the engine block were loose. If they had failed, the entire tractor would have broken in half. It's never happened since, and it was probably my lack of tightening after a rebuild in the first place, but I keep an eye on it now.

Mike, I have a friend who had his front axle come off of his NewHolland tractor while he was brush mowing. It was about a 40 horsepower 4x4 model. It came almost all the way off and in the process it did major damage to his axle in the form of bent pinion shaft and wrecked bearings and a cracked casting. He admitted he never checked any bolts for tightness and upon examination at the dealership it was clear that several of the bolts holding the axle pivot to the frame had worked loose over time and fell out. Then the remaining bolts broke and that was all she wrote. Great video and great advice!

I took delivery today of my first Tractor in my life (56), a Yanmar SA425. Excited to get to work with it, got some rain coming but when it clears out I will be out checking everything well, and reading the owners manual to see what kind of grease I should get so I can order a grease gun, some grease and a few odds and ends from your website. Really enjoy your videos, I have learned a lot

In 30 years fixing tractors, I’ve seen idk how many either lose or break front axles, and similarly, tractors broken in half when split bolts worked loose…always on loader tractors. Deere 4440, Deere 790 (either extreme there) IH 1086, D17 Allis, Farmall H and a Farmall 756, all come to mind. Had a customer hang a 85’ sprayer boom off front of a 7060 Allis…twisted things so bad it sheared motor mount bolts off the block, and dropped bolt head down into cam gears. Good point on drawbar bolts..see a lot of loose / missing / broken bolts there. Don’t forget how hard balers (round and square) and sprayers can be on them.

The gearbox on my brush hog came loose. I caught it before any damage. I tightened the bolts and continued, and the bolts loosened again. I took it to the shop, cleaned all the threads, and applied Loctite to the bolts. I haven't had that problem again. Thanks for the video, Mike.

After my step father passed, l decided to do some service on one of the family tractors. A massyferguson 1030. I started with a basic oil change a greasing. I noticed the front tires were loose, all the lug nuts were barely on a thread or two. After further inspection, all the bolts on the tractor were severely loose or missing. Even missing one bolt that holds the loader pins in, that pin backed out a couple inches. This tractor had 1250 hrs , and doubt anything maintenance had ever been done.

My 2023 Massie Ferguson 1723e come from the dealership with a majority of the loader, wheel, 3-point bolts paint pen marked, I don't know if the dealer or the factory did this, but after taking delivery I checked all the nuts and bolt as per manual and about 10% were under-torqued, the paint mark is a great idea for quick inspection. Here's a major tractor failure for you, in the mid 80s I get a phone call from a local farmer who needed his JD 4020 towed out from a muddy field, we had a very large 4x4 offroad wrecker capable for the task, upon arrival I see this tractor leaning way over to one side the dulles flopped over on the ground, and a plow attached. this was going to be a interesting recovery job at best. What happened was the wheel axel literally snapped just after the housing. having experience in machine shop welding repair our business I noticed the shaft wasn't twisted off but was fracturing slowly. the farmer was damn lucky he didn't get crushed because when it broke it folded the fender inward and the wheel flopped away from the machine. The good Lord was on his side that day. JD repaired his tractor, it was a problem with the heat treatment process in manufacturing. Crap happens when you least expect it. 😉

Years ago I worked for a tow company and we hauled most of the equipment for a local dealership. They had a new holland TL90 that came in on trade that got used as a loaner. One farm that had it on loan was hauling a wagon on the road. The loader mounts sheared off multiple bolts, as the tractor bounced up the road the bucket hit the asphalt, and shoved the loader arms up, and back through the windshield hitting the operator in the shoulders. That could have been fatal, but luckily no injuries

A touch of irony here....Last week I was clearing an area in my upper pasture, when suddenly hydraulic fluid gushed from under the tractor. Long story short, I found that a valve cap on the hydraulic manifold had worked loose exposing an O-ring causing the leak. You're right check torque and keep your eyes open.

Me being out of the automotive dealership end of things, realize how important the new vehicle inspection is. That includes proper lug nut torque! An example of not torqing bolts up is I came across a video of a big 2 wheel drive john deere tractor pulling a tillage rig and the engine and transmission separated! It was noted by the content creator that tractor had recently had a clutch replaced.

I was surprised how many bolts I found on my new tractor that were not tight, some were hand tight. Right after the tractor was delivered, I got the wrenches out and started checking all the bolts...like I said I was surprised how many I found that weren't tight. Just because its new doesn't mean it was prepped correctly...when I bought mine it was during the COVID nonsense, and tractors were going through the dealership faster than they could even keep up with demand....so it wasn't really all that uncommon to find things that weren't done during prep.

I believe when the final assembly was done on the tractor I have, an air impact was used for the lug nuts, When I checked the torque about 6 months later 2 on one side 1 on the other side had the threads for the lug nuts stripped. I replaced all of them and torqued to specs. Never had an issue since.

I bought a new 2000 model JD 5210. 1 front wheel bearing was loose, and the battery hold down was loose. I was at the dealer when an old farmer came in and asked the owner if the steering wheel was supposed to just pull off. He said it came off while on the road, he just stuck it back on, and kept driving. He said no, and I'll send someone to fix it right now.

I've seen rear end housings busted up from loose or missing bolts. The 2 cylinder John Deeres were really bad for loose bolts because of the bad vibration.

Not just on new tractors - about 15 years ago we had several bolts that hold the pin where one of the entire front hub assemblies of a 120 hp 4wd row crop tractor pivots when it turns come loose. The entire assembly with the wheel and tire still attached fell off while we were plowing. In the process it destroyed several of the planetary gears in the hub that were no longer available not even from a salvage yard. We were able to get it put back together so it was drivable, but it no longer had 4wd capabilities and we had to buy a new tractor because it was the only 4wd we had at the time and we needed that capability. Good news was that we could still use it for other less demanding tasks and we still have and use it but it was a $80k+ hit at the time.

I remember in the 80s my dad owned a John Deere 60 that he was using to do something in the hay field. I think he was baling square bales. The right rear wheel came completely off the tractor. He was lucky it didn't kill him and left a huge bruise on his entire right side when he went forward, but stayed on the tractor.

Could you do a video focusing on tire pressures for tractors? I have a Kubota MX5100 with industrial tires, I have the front at 45psi because I use the loader a lot but I have the rear at 15psi to get better traction. I have been told that industrial tires need to be run at higher pressures than agricultural tires, I'm not sure if that is true.

I am looking for a front wheel for my Kioti (2004) DK 45C 4WD. Kioti doesn't have one in the USA...try to find someone who can straighten a bent rim. My old J-D would wear parts that no one else even had...and despite greasing and checking, wore the pin under the front axle. And the little rubber ducky between the hydraulic pump and engine lasts about 300 hours. Replaced 3 of them in 20 years. Kubota told me their injector pumps NEVER leak. So my mechanic took it off and took it to the same dealer and they realized it could and did leak badly. No, it was not the transfer pump filling the crankcase. Tractor makers could do better.
