@@blacky8987 I think its reasonable to assume zangetsu did all that so he could have Ichigo's power and body to take over rather than to save him if you're in Ichigo's place. Obviously now we can see he really was helping him but with the way zangetsu talked about crushing him and taking his power and whatnot it makes sense to assume that he just wanted to take over.
