I was asked to take some photos and video of a new bell for Inverness Cathedral being cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London. Knowing nothing about bells or bell making, I found the visit interesting.

I had a casting made by the Whitechapel foundry for a arch top banjo tone ring. It is the best piece of cast metal i have ever machined. The foundry men are true craftsmen.

Wish I had had them pour a flathead ring for me.

I love bells. I pour aluminum alloy bells in my back yard in warm months. I usually make them about the size of a water bucket or a bit larger. I sand cast here in Ivanhoe Va USA

That was great! Very interesting, and how cool that you were there to see such a big job being done. Thanks for posting, Andrew.

Thank you for posting this video! I love bells and am very interested in all kinds although I'm a handbell ringer/director. I really enjoyed the inside view of Whitechapel and even spotted a friend in your video!

Big Ben is the second Great Bell manufactured for the Elizabeth Tower - the first bell was cast at John Warner & Sons in Stockton on Tees. The first bell developed a crack whilst being tested and had to be broke up - with the pieces being used to cast Big Ben at the Whitechapel site.

Mr Adler, you say the Liberty Bell cracked because it was " recast ". in pewter . QUESTION : are you saying it was cast more than once ? Also , you assert that it was cast using pewter as an alloy ....are you sure that a bell maker would skimp on materials in the making of an important commission ? In most bell castings , lead may be a miniscule % of the material . Please respond and thanks.

I find it interesting that both the Liberty Bell and Big Ben are the two most famous bells in the world, and both have cracks.

It was recast using pewter instead of tin, and the alloy was unsuitable.

Synthetic mold material dont work as well? Ah thats why ALL other industries use it. Maybe you are not proficent with it. Tools are rarely "bad" but The weilder of The tool usually is.
