Whitecliffs Domain Freedom Camp (Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand)

Whitecliffs Domain Freedom Camp is managed by Selwyn Council and you can camp here for free in either recreational vehicles or tents as you don't have to have a certified self-contained vehicle. I stayed in March 2023, which was autumn, when the leaves were turning golden.
As stated in the video, camping is only allowed over the summer season which runs from about late October through to end of March or April, depending on the weather in the region (if rainfall is heavy, they'll close the park).

I also was going to say there were no sandflies or mosquitoes around this river or the campsite area. Some campsites in NZ have sandflies near the rivers, but this park doesn't.

It's a sweet little campsite and it's good for those travelling with a dog, since most of the DOC campsites ban dogs, but they're allowed at Whitecliffs.

It was very popular in 1980s when The Whitecliffs Family Music Festival was held out there.

Thanks so much, Brianna. I went to Brisbane for 6 months to escape the cold in the South Island over winter, but I got sick of Brisbane a few weeks ago and came back to NZ :)

Which type of ice cream did you get? I normally only get that sort of thing from the big supermarkets now because prices have gotten so high.

I can't even remember the flavour now, I certainly remember the experience though, it was the day we walked the Rakaia river walk. It was a reward and we only just got there on time before they closed.@@caravanlifenz
