Read through the comment, a lot of people seem to be mistaken that this story related to the original "Cantarella", in fact it's not. This version has nothing to do with the original song and Borgia siblings, in "Cantarella ~Grace Edition~", Kaito and Miku simply are Kaito and Miku. This song is about the war between Black and White in chess style. On the Black side: Kaito is the King of Black, under him is Meiko - the Queen of Black, Len - the Knight of Black and Luka - the Bishop of Black. On the White side: Unknown King of White, Miku is the Queen of White, under her is Rin - the Rook of White. The "Cantarella" here is the chess piece, it represents that person's title. Throughout the song, you can see Miku has thrown away her Cantarella twice aka thrown away her "Queen" title as for she didn't want to join this stupid war. The first time didn't work because she was forced to continue fighting so there was a negotiation between two sides later on where you can see everyone sitting face-to-face (In the Project Diva PV, you can see the royal-ish hall with many chairs). After this event took place, Kaito and Miku had a private meeting in rose garden, Kaito has played a song with piano and made Miku fell in love with him completely. He then promised that he'd throw away his title and abandon his title to be an ordinary couple with Miku but when he threw it, he caught it again, not threw far away like Miku did. Kaito wanted to win this war at any cost and not willing to abandon anything. In the end, this fake love has caused Miku to die (which can be proven with the flash image at the start where you can see she cried, the unreachable hands, the broken effect of "Tsukamaete", the only white rose turned to blue, the fading figure of Miku in the rose garden and Kaito stood where Miku stood in the beginning of the song) but she died with a smile which made Kaito surprise. Miku smiled, she didn't blame him anything, just did it as a thanks him because she was free, no longer suffered, no longer be a pawn (which it's why you only see white pawn when the song title appears and at the end), no longer need to fight. Having her freedom completely. The rose color of Miku, beside from "innocence" also the hint for her tragic demise because white roses are used in funeral too.

WOW THANK YOU SO MUCH! This song really caught my attention when I heard it in project sekai, then when I read the subtitles had poison I was like ‘’Ahh the song didn’t sound that evil’’ which led me to look up its meaning, opened the guest website I saw, genius romanization, and it had that explanation of the story you mentioned in the intro. But reading that also destroyed me, at some point they mentioned something that was way too much (at the very end of the short explanation , you can check it out, I don’t really want to say it x-x). And then I was still so connected to the song today I kept playing it in pjsk, however not as happy as when I didn’t know the story because I had mixed feelings about it. Then I come across this video, without eng subs which is ok, I already know it… scrolling through the comments hoping to find an English comment…then I find yours!!! And OMG the story and the explanation you made make much more since than that horrible story on Genius (no offense to whoever wrote it, they were trying to help). I’m so happy I found this video, now I can play the song without worrying about it being not nice. Instead I also got my question answered , if the song was happy or sad, and it is actually both :) One thing that left my mind wondering after watching project diva 3D vid (that was the only way for me to find Miku’s voice in the song ) is why would Miku sing the lines that were about her falling into the trap or getting poisoned. Anyways sorry for the long comment… haha Thank you so much, greatly appreciated (Thx to whoever takes the time to read my comment too ^^)
Even though this song is super old (and has a very questionable meaning) He sounds the realest here. His voice has emotion and power and I actually cried while listening to this. I wish more people used his voice bank like this

@Tum Tum I never said anything was wrong with the song and it's meaning. I was just commenting on the voice bank. Some of the best vocaloid song are about those kind of relationships. To go even further, some of the best vocaloid songs are about really screwed up things, but they acknowledge them in an appropriate light, just as the song did here. The song didn't glorify it in anyway. It's just part of life. I never said I hated the song or hated it's meaning. Sorry if I gave you that impression.

I totally agree. Most songs he really sounds robotic from Kaito and I kinda thought that male voices were more difficult to sound good (till now the only good sounding vocaloids are the female ones en Len cuz of his high voice) but this is the first time I hear Kaito with such a clean voice O_O (there are still newer songs of him that sound horrible xD).
I heard that WhiteFlame makes KAITO sound very good, but this is genuinely the best tuning I've ever heard for KAITO. I was not expecting him to sound this soft and beautiful.
