Lyrics So if you go And leave recklessly 'We' can only be me 'We' can only be me That's something I Through the turns of my life Never wanted to be Never wanted to be But if you stay Just a bolt in the bow Then you'll never know Then you'll never know How you could miss Like the daylight, the way You're missing us now You're missing us now So listen to some reason There's nothing in your dreams But if you're getting even You're getting even Trying to get even? Better start believing I can forgive And we can forget Even after all this Love and other nonsense we've made Now if we kiss Then the moon in the sky Would linger awhile Would linger awhile So as to gift Just an inch more of night But you break from my life No more kiss, no more I But listen to some reason There's nothing in your dreams! But if you're getting even You're getting even Trying to get even? Better start believing I can forgive And we can forget Even after all this Wrestling of conscience I can forgive And we can forget Even after all this Love and other nonsense It's the worst part of the best of me Best of me Love, I'm trying so hard to be free Worst got the best of me, best of me Love, I'm trying so hard to be free Lonely but free and out of love If you're getting even You're getting even [x3] Trying to get even? Better start believing I can forgive And we can forget Even after all this Wrestling of conscience I can forgive And we can forget Even after all this Love and other nonsense You're getting even [x2] And I can forgive And we can forget You're getting even You're getting even [x4]

I find it endearing that their progressions occur so quickly. There is very little "dead space" in their tracks. Once the track begins, the vocals follow soon, along with more instrumentation. They make truly amazing and thoughtful music. Yeah, I CAN'T get these lads off my playlist. Rad!

The track explores the complexities and aftermath of a troubled relationship. The lyrics suggest a sense of resignation and acceptance for the situation at hand, while also expressing feelings of longing and a desire for resolution. In the first verse, the narrator acknowledges their reluctance to become someone they never wanted to be, possibly due to the actions or behavior of their partner. The line "we can only be me" implies a sense of self-preservation and a refusal to compromise their own identity. The second verse delves into the consequences of staying in a stagnant relationship. The line "then you'll never know how you could miss like the daylight the way you're missing us now" suggests that by refusing to confront or address the problems in the relationship, the partner is missing out on the potential for growth and happiness. The chorus serves as a plea for reconciliation and understanding. It suggests that if the partner can listen to reason and overcome their desire for revenge or "getting even," forgiveness and healing are possible. The mention of "all this love and other nonsense" implies that despite the ups and downs, the love shared between the two is worth fighting for. The third verse introduces the idea of a consequential kiss, symbolizing the potential for unity and connection. However, the partner's decision to break away from the narrator's life signifies the end of that potential. This further emphasizes the sense of missed opportunities and the pain of separation. The bridge speaks to the conflicting emotions within the narrator, describing themselves as the "worst part of the best of me." There is a struggle between love and the desire for freedom, potentially hinting at the internal battles faced in trying to salvage the relationship. The pre-chorus and subsequent repetitions of the chorus highlight the theme of "getting even." It suggests that revenge or seeking retribution will not lead to resolution, but rather forgiveness, understanding, and a genuine attempt to fix the relationship are necessary. The song concludes with the repeated lines "you're getting even, and I can forgive, and we can forget." Here, the narrator expresses their willingness to let go of past grievances and move forward, allowing for the possibility of healing and reconciliation. Overall, "Getting Even" delves into the complexities of relationships, highlighting the importance of communication, forgiveness, and a shared determination to overcome obstacles. It invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences with troubled relationships and the potential for growth through empathy and understanding.
