Throughout the series, the show introduces various characters and in the audience we wonder: "Is this person going to try to destroy Beth?" We're apprehensive that everyone we meet is going to be an enemy. And then you get to this episode at the end of the series, and you realize that throughout her journey, Beth's only major enemy was the most formidable opponent imaginable: herself.

In the final scenes Beth is dressed as the White Queen - complete with the little bobble on the top of her cap - transformed from the relatively powerless pawn of the first episode. In chess a pawn can be promoted to a Queen if it's able to advance to the eighth rank from its starting position on the second rank, involving seven ranks inclusive. Beth does it in seven episodes.

The final game against Borgov was designed by former real-life champion Gary Kasparov for the show. The first half, until Borgov adjourns, was patterned on a real championship game, but after the adjournment Kasparov redesigned the game so that it climaxes with a series of moves: Beth sacrifices her queen, then a few moves later, exchanges her pawn for a new queen. A pawn (the lowest piece on the board) becomes a queen, and Beth trades her old queen for a new queen, mirroring her journey.

@@gemelwalters2942 Well, not good for her, because it's a Star Wars series. So obviously she's being dogpiled by racist hate messages from Star Wars fans. I hope she was prepared for that, and I hope the cash she gets for it is worth it. (I adore Star Wars, but tbh if I was an actor, I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. Harrassing actors off of the Internet and out of the profession seems to be the fandom's favourite past time ever since the prequels)

@@baguettegott3409 yea I read about it after making my comment here and looking up her roles. I feel like every fandom is becoming so unbearable, I don't even want to engage anyone anymore whether it's star wars fans, comic book movies or video games...It's the same divisive rhetoric. I stay off social media, the only thing I still use is youtube and twitter (not for long by the look of things). I just want to enjoy stories and have meaningful discourse whether we're in agreement or not...just be respectful. Sigh...Hopefully the actress doesn't let that keep her down, I'll certainly look forward to what she does next.

Beth, because of the way her mother treated her as a mistake, believed that everyone sees her the same way and that no one cares or loves her. She thought that the world sees her only through the prism of chess and her value is only as a chess player. In this episode, she realizes that there were always people around her who cared about her as a person, appreciated her and tried to support her.

my favorite thing about this series as a whole is that it never fell on the tropes that we expect for a drama like this. Beth was never abused at the orphanage, nobody ever took advantage of her; yet the show was still engaging throughout! the finale was like a warm hug after returning home from a stressful trip. I loved the moment when all Beth's friends came together to help her win and she finally realized she could do it without the drugs; she just needed to accept help from those who cared about her. thanks for an amazing reaction guys! The end scene (her dressed in white and the hat) is symbolic of her being the queen chess piece. Her getting out of the car and walking is her moving over the chess board just like the queen can move anywhere. So great.

Every chess game was authentic thanks to Gary Kasparov being the chess consultant on the series even though they wanted him to play Borgov. The final game was a game that Ivanchuk played in 1993 to a draw, but Kasparov found the knight move that started the winning combination and was keeping to use in a game, but never did until his retirement. This means the final Beth Harmon game is adding new information to competitive chess theory. Kasparov coached Taylor Joy on moving pieces in long games and speed chess in the way that top chessplayers do so that the series would look authentic - even to chess players.

During adjournments it is was quite legal to consult with others, and books overnight. With the age of the computer's adjournments changed because it was suddenly easy to cheat. Even a cellphone, if it goes off, you forfeit the match. . Now only a short break then the game continues till the finish.

The moment where she sees Scheibel’s clippings wall is the best. That moment where you realize that someone really loved you, but that it’s too late to return that love or even to thank them. Beth begins as a militant loner, out of trauma and self-defense. She cannot accept love - not from Harry, not from Benny, not even really from Alma. Jolene is the one who shows her what she’s missing, and then Scheibel’s basement, and then finally the team of her friends helping her through that last game, even in this most individualistic of pursuits, chess. The arc of this story is, “Beth Harmon learns to have the courage to love.”

When she visited the orphanage basement and saw how much she meant to Mr. Shaibel, and broke down looking at the old picture of them in Jolene's car, I, like many other people, also broken down with tears. She remembered where she came from and regained her reason and love of the game of chess. She made sure to stress the importance of Mr. Shaibel when talking to the press in Moscow. I love that aspect of the story. We all come from some place. Let us not forget the people who helped us when we were small, and down and out.

You should have a permanent slot on this channel for limited series or cancelled/finished shows that only have 1 or 2 seasons. It would be a great way to get around to more shows that might not normally get much of a spotlight just because there are more popular shows that have way more seasons. On that note, I might as well throw in my hat again for 11.22.63. It's a really good underrated limited series on Hulu based on a Stephen King novel, and it's set in a similar time period as this show, and since you liked the period aspect of this, I think you would like it in that as well.

At the end I think it was about her realizing she's not toxic, and there are a lot of people who want her to kick ass, to succeed, that her winning is not just about her. People admire her and feel good about her success. It's gotta be good to know that one friend flew all the way to Moscow for her, and many others stayed up all night to help her strategize. All her life those she loved and loved her were obliterated. Now she's feeling loved and those that love her aren't going anywhere.

It takes seven moves to get to the opponent's end line, where a pawn can turn into a queen. What beth does in the game. Therefore seven episodes. There are other chess references. Beth looks like the white queen at the end. It's the first time she's played the Queen's Gambit; she's never done it, let alone taken it, in any episode before. This series is extraordinary, never to be fully grasped on first viewing.

I think you would love Fleabag. Only two short seasons. Emotional tone runs the gamut. A wonderful cast, led and written by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, based on her one-woman stage show. Coming out this weekend is Litvenenko, which is a miniseries starring David Tennant in the title role, a true story about the assassination of a former KGB agent in London and his widow's mission to find justice.

1968 was at the height of the Cold War, the prospect of any Russians wanting to possibly defect is a major deal at the time, hence the DOD agent telling her to let him know if she receives any note or signal.

Yeah Benny spoke about Russians. When it comes to chess they have a culture of more collectivism than individualism. They welcome each other’s help and work as a group to beat strong opponents. The Players have to memorize strategies. If they were reading notes or getting help from the audience during a match then that’s consider cheating.

Chernobyl is a great watch, while not the wholesome kind it's still a gripping story. There aren't many limited series like Queens Gambit which is unfortunate. Because the creators don't have to worry about retaining an audience for 2 or 3 more seasons in a limited series, the tight storytelling is always so good.

Jolene's car is a Corvair. It was a fancy car from the 60's. The cool thing about a Corvair is both ends of the car look like the front of the car! Symbolic car choice as Jolene and Beth are essentially traveling back in time during the early part of the last episode. Check it out..... When Jolene and Beth first pull in the driveway to Methuen Orphanage, it looks like the car is backing into the driveway in reverse, i.e they're going back in time!! So many wonderful touches the film makers put into The Queen's Gambit!!

I love that show! Everything about it: music, acting, cast, the story! So good! And the creators did such a good job to show the ambiance correctly. For example, that clock on Beth's bedside table in the hotel room in Russia. My parents got the same clock as a present for their wedding in 1975!!! It still works, by the way. 😊 And they actually invited some Russian actors for those tiny roles of old men in the park, one of them is quite famous in Russia, though he is from Lithuania, his name is Juozas Budraitis. Thank you for your reaction, it was fun to rewatch it with you!

Many of the chess games in the show were actual historical games chosen by the technical advisors, one of whom was a former world champion. There are videos on KZbin that analyze the games. As to adjournments, either player, when it was his or her turn to play could adjourn the game any time after 40 moves had been played (that's 40 moves by each player). It was common for the game to be analyzed overnight by each player's support team. Adjournments were eliminated from tournament play once chess playing computers became too strong as they could analyze almost every permutation of the game, thus eliminating the human element.

Seriously one of the best shows i've ever seen. So many great callbacks too! Like the Avengers Endgame moment coming from when Benny says that the Russians help each other and "us Americans are so individualistic". Then Townes showing up because the Russians were using him as a distraction. That's why they helped him get there. Which is even more proof that Cleo was there because of the Russians! Then, at the end her outfit is mirroring a white Queen chess piece! I wept w joy when i first watched this episode. PS: Stella, i love you! lol

The show felt real because a lot of it was from real life. Every game from the show was taken from a real life game. When Borgov resigns, king in hand, and claps, it happened in 1972 when USA player Bobby Fisher beat Russian Boris Spasky in the world title match.

At 7:40 it IS real. That's the headmaster who her friend had just told her had an incident and now walked with a cane. She's apparently a little off in the head now as well as she's seeing her as her younger self instead of the full grown woman she is.

Chess is not like boxing - beating the World Champion in a Tournament (Moscow Invitational - a real tourney, btw) does not make you World Champion. It's just one game. To become World Champion, you must first earn the right to challenge the World Champion, beating out the other candidates in match play. And then after wading through the others - you then must beat the Champ in a full-blown match (many games) before you are crowned World Champion.

One of the few very nearly perfect series out there, leaves you so satisfied. Partly I wish it was longer and got more into some of the characters like Benny, but then realize it's the perfect length. You really should watch Andor, it's another series that makes you want to stand up at the end and beg for more (already watched through it multiple times) Amazing characters and actors.
