What do the N & R stand for in the upper left corner of the pets?

Does it make a difference which pet is refined? Leveling up effects the skills but refining seems to be independent of that and can be used on any pet for the same benefits.

this game always finds something to take money from players. For example you paid a lot untill now. if you refuse to pay for the pet you will be amongst weak people now
