I got mine just 4 days ago and it's been wonderful for voice over. The preamps and conversion are noticeably better than my UA Apollo interface and actually makes my Neumann TLM103 (what many consider to be an at times harsh microphone) smoother sounding while retaining its clarity which is excellent for voice over. I also don't need to de-ess nearly as much. The built in effects are excellent. I'm stunned at how good the noise gate sounds (though I really wish it was an expander) and the compressor and EQ are extremely transparent, which is ideal for voice over. All of the extra features are a bonus, I only really got this because I wanted the best audio quality in an 2x XLR interface money could buy with built-in DSP, and I think it delivers on that front.

Hi MarkVO, MikeVO here :D Just commenting because I have the exact experience as you! I switched from RME Babyface Pro FS last November and besides that my observations are just the same as yours! Really wish the Gate was an Expander or had the option to switch. I do now even print with EQ, which I haven't done since I used hardware EQ - just because the one in the MT 48 sounds so good. - And I use FabFilter usually. Cheers, Mike!

MarkVO , have you perhaps made a routing setup for live VO sessions, which eliminates the potential loopback?

@@RolandDobbins UAD's DSP based de-essers never really did it for me. The main things I miss from Apollo are CVOX and the AMS Neve DFC Channel strip. Loved those two, but ultimately third party plugins can fill that gap. I'm just happy to have a better sounding and more reliable interface. With that said, the MT48 is definitely not it if you like lots of Analog hardware emulation - I didn't.

bit of a late comment, I have this shot out side by side against the ADI DAC FS (which is assumed to be same or better based on documented measurements of last gen), across multiple studios in multiple countries, high end speaker systems and headphones. MT48 wins every time, not even close, you get more HF and LF extension, width, shaper imagine, depth, transients, and dynamics esp in the low end. Which was surprising but every time we tested it with different groups of people it's always a unanimous agreement that MT48 wins, not really that close either.

You talked about everything, but here is the real question, HOW does it sound? Mic preamps? AD/DA? How does it compare to more expensive/trusted brands like RME/Lynx/Avid/Apogee/Prism etc. How does it compare to your setup? When you buy an audio interface, the features and quirks are nice but the sound is the main part, I personally own this model and that's why I feel like you didn't talk a a lot about the sound, considering how impressive it is :)

If you need to buy before anyone makes that video and can’t buy both and return one after trying them out, I was choosing between Merging and RME recently and would offer you this: RME has *dramatically* faster round-trip-latency - which is critical for monitoring performance of virtual instruments and plugins working in-the-box. Lost more sleep than I’d like to admit over conversion FOMO (MT48/Anubis specs are insane), but decided the ~5% improvement over RME was not worth as much to me as latency, long-term driver support and reliability, and bus-power-ability (I travel a fair bit and Babyface checked all my boxes). If you don’t need the low RTL and know you want to do networked audio, the MT48 is going to be amazing for you. Either way, you’ll be working with an extraordinary interface. Edit: two other considerations (1) if you want to record without a DAW, UCXII all day or (2) if you’re working in ATMOS (and money is no object) MT48 will plug-and-play with Merging’s other offerings (HAPI/HORACE) for building that out.

Cool to learn more about Neumann's entry into interfaces from you, Wytse. I have an RME Fireface UC interface that I got about 14 years ago that still works great and still is supported by RME. I got it after years of switching from one interface to another every couple years as M-Audio and Mackie (for example) kept abandoning their products as new desktop OS versions came out. What I suspected then was that the high cost of RME would pay for itself given their reputation for stellar long-term support. I know longer suspect it; RME has demonstrated such exceptional support. I'll probably update it in the next year or so, and I'm heavily leaning toward RME. The MT48 is attractive, but at this high price, my top concern after audio quality is the company's commitment to long-term support. In my mind, it's an open question, given how new Neumann is to this space. I'd be interested to hear if they've made any statements about their investment and vision for Neumann digital audio, and if there is any public info about the experience of their developers. -Tom

@@TazzSmk Thanks for the info re: connection to Merging Technology's Anubis. The Sound on Sound review of the MT 48 discusses the relationship, as does a review of the MT 48 in AudioXpress. Sennheiser owns Neumann and also recently acquired Merging. The MT 48 is a bit more than a rebranding. It adds a USB-C interface, and is class-compliant, so it will work with iPads. The MT 48 also adds Toslink optical with S/PDIF and ADAT support. It appears that the Anubis feature set targeted broadcast, and the changes in the MT 48 target pro audio. The Anubis has 384kHz PCM and DSD capability, and ability to import Sonarworks SoundID speaker EQ curves; these features are not included in the MT 48. FWIW, in the SOS review, Sam Inglis write, "The Anubis sticks in my mind as being perhaps the best‑sounding interface I’ve reviewed, and the MT 48 is no different." He also suggests the Anubis may be better for ATMOS. The review was from September, when the MT 48 didn't have the monitor control capabilities of the Anubis. Wytse's review here makes me wonder if that's a recent addition to the MT 48.

What really differentiates these high-end products is the feature set. How any audio interface past a certain price point sounds now, is a matter of taste. At one point not long ago, I had both RME's and Universal Audio's flagship offerings as they're called, and A/B'ed in three separate studios. I could tell the difference between them, without fail, but I couldn't say one was better than the other. I kept my UA Apollos, and gave my RME to a good friend as a wedding present only because I was so invested in the UA ecosystem already.

Software looks impressive but the interface is clearly not made for synths. The choice of midi connectors on this unit is rather baffling to me. TRS midi jacks are usually found on compact synths (where they make sense for their small connector size) but on an expensive top of the range audio interface I would have expected to see full size DIN connectors. A pretty strange choice. Must have been a design oversight or a late minute addition. The problem with TRS midi is that there are different wiring variants, most common are 3.5mm A or B wiring but it depends on the manufacture’s preference which one they use. To make matters worse, there are even 2.5mm versions around as well. If they hade made the enclosure slightly bigger they could have fitted DIN connectors in there.

Merging's Anubis is marketed as mastering grade and the internals are supposedly identical with the MT48 except for the ADAT i/o. I spent a ton of time comparing these against RME's offerings a few months ago and found the biggest weakness of the MT48/Anubis is real-time latency. If you need to monitor plugins or virtual instruments in your DAW while tracking, RME is a better solution. The MT48/Anubis does compare favorably to RME's ADI lineup, which are also considered "mastering grade." The Anubis comes with Sonarworks built-in, which is cool. Supposedly this is rolling out to the MT48 eventually, but not yet. If you don't need two RJ-45 ports for broadcast work, the MT48's ADAT i/o makes it more flexible than the Anubis and the only option I've seen bridging USBRavenna/AES67ADAT - which offers a ton of flexibility down the line. If you have the cash, there's never been a better time to shop for audio interfaces.

There really is no reason for that screen to have such a low refresh rate and lag time. Phones have had responsive 120 hz screens for years now and this thing is so spendy that seems like it would be an obvious first step. Add smooth software, responsive screen, high refresh rate... the current screen looks like its from 2005. Even though everything else is wonderful that would always irk me.

If you don’t use Ravenna it is not worth it. Problems i have 8 input channels over usb so you can not use 8 ADAT in and the internal channels. They deliver the worst usb-C cables with it. It does not understand the difference between 48kHz and 96kHz over ADAT you have to manually switch or you will get jitter. Boottime is very long…

Oh yeah honey. Neumann, made an audio console. Back in, 1972. I was familiar with it. Though I never saw one in person. And I guess you got an EQ module from that. Very nice. Very, Neve, looking. But from across the channel in Germany. A lot of people don't know this one. What is George Neumann, best known for? If you said, microphones. That's wrong. If you set audio consoles? That's wrong. What then? He created one of the greatest contributions to, Science and Space Exploration. He is the creator. Of the first, Rechargeable, Chemical Battery. That could work in the vacuum of space. The, Nichol Cadmium Battery.. That is what George Neumann is best known for. It changed all of our lives. It was needed for the, V-2, ICBM. As it went into space. And back down again. A dry cell battery and a lead acid battery. Won't work in the vacuum of space. At that some history about George Neumann. Not popularly known. He must've been a hell of a, Brainiac. Hitler certainly liked him. And Warner von Braun. From vastly different times. 100 years ago. And Dr. Robert Goddard and his efforts. With liquid rocket fuel. Neumann Co., no longer really exists. As they were bought up by, Sennheiser. Who also made nice microphones. Along with BEYER. And AKG in Austria. Kind of like Germany but not Germany. Home of Mozart who was not German. I went to see his birthplace in, Salzburg, Austria. In a row house. Today. With a McDonald's across the cobblestone street. Sacrilege! What the? Who the? Blasphemy! I had a bevy. Of some of George Neumann's, wonderful microphones. Both vacuum tube and transistor types. I owned them for over 40 years. I recently sold them all off. I will dearly miss them all. But I wasn't using those on, cheap, low-budget, rock 'n' roll recordings. Where, $100 US, SM-57 & 58's, sound just great! No real need for a $10,000 microphone. Nor a, $3300 microphone. Nor a, $2000 microphone. Today it's all, Status Bullshit. Oh sure they made a difference. Back in the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Until we got Linear Digital Recording. Then they became largely, superfluous. To be able to cut through the, mushy, Analog Tape, grunge. Those microphones made a big difference. But today we don't have that, Analog Tape Grunge. Now it is crystal clear, linear PCM encoding. Not the best format but it works. It was the first of its kind. I'm getting too old for this.. RemyRAD

Though the more affluent and financially better off. Will still want that, old world, old school, Old Studio, Experience. And they will pay dearly for that. At somebody else's studio. That caters only to the rich and wealthy. Or they just build their own and their mansion at home. Like Shaquille O'Neal, did. Who knew? I thought he was a basketball player? But no. Now he can afford to be a wealthy recording artist! Because it only takes money to do it. And he has lots and lots and lots. Of, lots. His studio doesn't have to make money. It just makes fun times. That he paid for. Like proper adults do. To constructively fund. Their own good times. At not have to worry whether they are going to breakeven. So nearly $2000 for this Neumann,, audio interface will be great for Shakeel O'Neil to have poolside.. And if it falls into the pool? And gets destroyed. His insurance will pay for the replacement. But we don't have any insurance. At once dropped in the pool. It's bye-bye. Don't take it to the pool next time. Take the Behringer interface that only cost $40, instead. And it will still get a recording. Nobody will hear the difference of. And nobody will care as to the difference. As he also purchased stock in Behringer. Of course that is not totally accurate. But the $1850 price is. For a 2 channel Milliman thingy to plug into your computer. That cost, 1/4. What the Neumann, MT-48, interface costs. So it's really only designed to plug into a high-end MacBook Pro. And not that $250 Lenovo special. As you would have to be a dork. To have a $250 laptop plugged into a $1800 + audio interface. Right? Right. Of course it's got extra, Whizbang features to it. Beyond its input and output capabilities. Some of those whizbang's look like fun and useful. After all its $1850 worth of whizbang. Because what's doing the actual converting of input and output. Basically just a couple of chips. Not costing more than $50 total. The other $1800. Is testament to their fine reputation. To let everybody know. You have much more money than they do. And why does Bob Clearmountain only need a cheap old, computer audio gizmo? It's because Bob Clearmountain doesn't need, entry-level, beginner, Whizbang Features. He definitely does not. And so all the extra gobbledygook is just kid stuff to play with. And knowing they spent, Beaucoup Dinero. To be able to feel and act important! Don't you know I purchased a Neumann gizmo!??! You ignorant fool! And you have to get arrogant like that if you purchase this $1800 gizmo. And you're that stupid? It really shouldn't have cost more than $500 may be $800? Something practical that people can actually afford. I mean for $1850 I'd rather purchase a decent used motorcycle I can go fast on. Even at 68 years of age. So as much as I would love to have one of these myself. As I would have no qualms owning one. I cannot justify the price. I know it's inside this thing. A couple of Asian made chips. What do those cost? Nothing! They cost virtually nothing. They are the same that everybody else is using. It's only a couple of transistors at the input. And a couple of transistors at the output. They get to, display. Their circuit designing prowess. Oh boy what genius! Classic design from, 70+ years ago! That took a lot of thought! And no college degree necessary. I think it's all rather funny. Neumann obviously on the verge of out of business. Absorbed by the Sennheiser company. Some years back. So they went bankrupt already. They already closed and went out of business. Sennheiser took pity upon them. Grab the name and kept on churning out, the old-fashioned microphones. But I got angry at Neumann one day. Yes I did. They had introduced the TLM-67. I had a pair of original, U-67's. But I found out the brand-new TLM-67 was 1000+ dollars less. Than the U-87. And I said to them. You just destroyed the value of my classic collectible U-67's! What the hell were you guys thinking? If you want to re-release the 67? Then, release a proper, Reissue, U-67. Not this cheaper, Transformer less, thingy. That was at the Nashville Mix Magazine Audio Convention. In 2012. 12 years ago. And obviously. What I said to them made sense. As they then did a, Reissue U-67. List price 5000+ dollars. New. So now they were making sense again. Yet I believe they still kept the TLM-67 available also? I think yes? They told me the reason for making that TLM-67 $1000 less than the U-87. They told me, the output transformers are expensive to make. And that's the high hideous cost of the U-87's, today. Mostly in its interbody microphone output transformers. So those must be wound with, goldplated wire or something? With 1000 turns on each bobbin? Then yes. The microphone output transformers would get a little costly, I would imagine? $3000 worth I guess? And is this making any sense? Anymore? For a microphone purchase? And who will be singing on it? Frank Sinatra? I don't think so. He's dead and gone. So is John Lennon. So will go the way of, Sir Paul McCartney. And he won't be singing anymore after he's dead. So who are these microphones for? A very retired Cyndi Lauper? I don't think so? Dave Grohl? Maybe? But you know what they say to performers? Break a leg. And he did in front of his audience one day. He took it very seriously. He broke his leg. Falling off the stage. He probably didn't feel much. To be certain he was well stoned. But he finished the show. With the ambulance driver holding his broken leg in place. What an incredible Performer Trooper Dave Grohl is. Who would do that? But a loon? I met and recorded him once. He was about the funniest person I had ever met. And I wondered what he was doing playing drums for a living? He should have his own TV show! Like the Tonight Show. I think he would be better than Seth Meyers? And Dave Grohl is not even a professional comic. He's just naturally goofy. He's from Springfield Virginia. That's why! He lived, like me. 2 miles from the Pentagon! And we both used to go to the Springfield Shopping Mall. I think one of the last in the country that still exists filled with, country bumpkins from Virginia. Yes! That's how it goes in the real world. Of microphones. RemyRAD

Well? While I loved my, original, Neumann pair of, U-67's, KM-56, U-87's, KM-86's, KML. And I drooled over a, Neumann, recording console. 50 years ago. Back in the early 1970s. I don't think this new, Neumann gizmo. Is, worth its exorbitant price. I think it's definitely overpriced. Way, overpriced. I mean let's get real here. What's inside this thing? Chinese made integrated circuit chips. That everybody else or using, also. So it really only comes down to the, very input and very output, circuitry. Certainly none of it revolutionary. And no input transformers either. As Neumann definitely knows how to make, expensive microphone transformers. I would not turn one of these units down. Over other offerings. It's from a name we can trust. Based upon their superlative reputation of quality, manufacturing. But the cost of this thing does not There is just nothing inside this thing to warrant, this kind of excessively high exorbitant, status style, expenditure. Okay so it says Neumann. It's not worth this much. Of course there are plenty of loons.. That also purchase, Universal Audio, overpriced components. Very, overpriced, components. And again. It's a Status Symbol Product. At least one should be able to expect, reasonably good performance. From quality input and output circuitry. And how many transistors does that take? How much does each transistor cost? So it's got about, $25 worth of transistors in it. Oh wow! 25 big dollars US style. For a few transistors. There's only one inside the 3300+ dollar Neumann U-87. The same transistor you could get at Radio Shaft. The exact same part number transistor at Radio Shaft for just $0.98 US. The same model number transistor in the famed U-87 that cost over $3300. So obviously not for that transistor. It was for the output transformers mostly. Norman told me the output transformers for the U-87, were expensive to make. That's why they came out with the TL M1 03. It's a Transformer less, front capsule cardioid only, U-87. But it sure doesn't sound like a U-87. It's transformer less. It sounds, transformer less. And so it sounds, Cheap. But has the Neumann name on it. To make you feel good. About your purchase. The favorite MIC, of Hitler. As a Jew would always gave me a warm feeling inside my body. Purchasing that Neumann quality sound. And if you listen carefully in the background. You can hear millions of Jews screaming. Supplied with every microphone. But hey they sound great! And George Neumann has not killed anybody for over 80 years now so? I guess it's safe to purchase his stuff? But I am not a traitor to my own kind. After more than 40 years of ownership of my Neumann microphones. I recently sold them all off. All, off. I had to. It was time. I'm done. I'm retired. Everybody has to die. My turn coming up. So no more need for beautiful microphones and rock 'n' roll recordings. Through my not Neumann console. And have already sold off, both of my 36 input, 1972, vintage Neve, consoles. So sorry to see them go. I've been using them since 1984. 40 years ago. And you get attached to these things. You've lived with them, your entire adult life long. Then you sell your child off. In this horrible, horrible, one piece at a time! What a horrible ending! Ugh! So honestly I was going to purchase one of these things.. Until I saw the price. WTF with that? I mean I expected, something like, $800? But no. They got greedy. Way overinflated price. They'll just never learn. Times have changed. Why do you think they came out with the, TLM-103 and TLM-102? As you can afford a stereo pair of those. For the same price you only get one. Of the U, series. And so nearly $2000 US for a 2 channel interface? Beyond nonsense! As, Apogee. Is the favorite of another engineer I love, Bob Clearmountain. And I absolutely love his recordings. When I spoke to him about, what small interfaces he used with his laptop when he's out and about? And he told me the 1st Release, single-channel gizmo. That he liked the earliest one better than the leader new or improved, version. And I was horrified by that. I said to Bob. Bob do you know what you're saying about your wife's company? He grinned and chuckled and said yes I know. But I like the earliest unit best. And we don't make it anymore. Well I just thought that was one of the funniest things, I had ever heard. From someone who is pretty much the next most famous, Audio Engineer to that of Geoff Emerick, George Massenburg, Bruce Swedien. They were all just the world's best. I just wanted to be them. And I was. In a slightly different and skewed, manner. When your career takes something of a detour and you roll with it. So I didn't cut any hit records per se. I just mixed a lot of those artists, for live broadcast. Which was still an incredible thrill, to do. Even though I had no real, interaction with them. Nobody was telling me how to mix them for live broadcast. Really only once was I given a requested directive. Of an engineering request. For a broadcast of the Counting Crows. When they were a thing, 30 years to cope. And that was a fun job. Adam Duritz, got a bit, bitchy. As he was one of the few I was able to have a brief, preproduction meeting and mix, sound check. Before the broadcast. And so I asked Adam, did he have any particular, engineering mix requests from me. He said yes. And he told me,, he stated, I want no reverb. I want it completely dry. I don't want any reverb. I said Roger that Adam,, Wilco. And he goes out to play his, 10 minute sound check for me. And I push up a nice mix. He came back into the control room to take a listen. To my playback. And he got real bitchy. I TOLD YOU I DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR ANY REVERB! Well, Adam. As per your directive. You can plainly see. All of my Digital Reverbs in my control room are all turned off. I haven't added any. Your hearing the natural reverb. Coming off the stage of the Meriwether Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. You were raised in the area. You've been here many times. You've never heard the reverb on the stage? No he had not. He was flummoxed. I told him this is the reverb on the stage. He was dumbfounded by that. He said oh? Okay then? Like I could do anything about that? I thought that was very funny. People are idiots even rock stars. Particularly, rock stars. Like the ones that wanted no, green M&Ms was it? Or brown M&Ms? I forget? I would never work with anybody like that. I would throw the M&Ms at them. Pick out your own M&Ms! Contract, Riders, my ass! I do not put up with utter total nonsense! Not even for a price. I do not cater to weirdos. I cater to other Professionals. Not children with too much money and fame. Sorry no. So, it all depends on how you roll the dice. You don't know what numbers are coming up? You might win or you might crap out? Most of the time you crap out. Because it actually costs money to stay the course. And there are more downtimes than high times. It's really no longer profitable to be in the Studio Business of any kind.
