The Steve Vai version is good, but, even though I've listened to this version after the Vai version, somehow I like this one a whole lot more. Maybe it's because this recording has classic rock guitar sound, even though Vai's playing is beyond excellent on the other recording.
@bluesdoc4273

The 2nd version is better - and I'll explain why..... This version has that "definite" classic rock" sound !! However, I like the better the 1989 remake with Steve Vai. ( Steve Vai's playing is fantastic - BUT THAT'S NOT THE REASON WHY ) ------------------------------------------------------------- In the 1989 remake, David Coverdale's voice is amazing. He pushes himself and gives a more dynamic performance. The 1989 version has stronger/kick ass singing from David Coverdale !!!

This is a great song. I am a guitar player for 10 years, and I learned to play listening and trying to play metal and "modern hard rock" songs. But I think the early Whitesnke sound (78-84) like this is much better than what it became after 1985. Today I really like much more hard rock like this: overdriven guitar, but not fully distorted and heavy, good bass line, drums without double bass playing the entire song, and vocals without screaming all the time. In fact I became a fan of "blues rock" the last years. The songs and instument lines may be "simpler", but what matters is whether the final result is good.

Whitesnake was so much better as a blues band, I hated how Geffen turned them into a pop metal hair band, just ruined it for me....is that what they mean by selling out?

The best version of this song. I discovered it after the US version and found this one more soulfoul.

Much respect to Bernie Marsden ‘R.I.P’, however I much prefer the later version from ‘Slip of the Tongue’ with Steve Vai on it.

Heard the “Stevie Vai” version on the radio today, and had to listen to the original version. Yup, the songs way better with The Beast.

I just knew it. Back in -80. I was visiting my father in Stavanger autumn 1980. 19 years old, first long trip in my "new" car. 1100 km straight from Stockholm without pauses except for number one. Well, after a few days this record was released. I couldn´t wait so I bought it for double the cost in Sweden. It is still one of my best records ever.
