Its cos Coverdale knew he didnt need him. Riff writing doesnt make songs like Here I Go Again, Crying in the Rain or Still of the Night. Look at Blue Murder. Not one song that comes close to the songs on 87. Not even in the same universe, and it was all Sykes. I say this cos I'm a guitarist and write tons of killer riffs,in my opinion, but they're nothing without a singer to make it magical. And I dont mean to discount Sykes at all. Coverdale knew how good he was but also knew he didnt need him.

Looking for love. Such an underrated track. The vocal and guitar on that track just encapsulates everything white snake is about. Roaring posturing powerhouse vocal with blues feeling and a rip your face off guitar section with staggering vibrato and shredding with such passion. Such great memories of that track while I was going to grammar school and doting on a girl.

True and one of my favorite Whitesnake songs of all time. I think the reason he never played the song live is the fact that it is too long and while it starts as a very slow ballad it gets faster and heavier and especially the ending is hard to reproduce live

Coverdale gives Sykes credit here in fairness. The fact that David mentions Sykes was a late sleeper, even Philo mentioned this... and Coverdale is early to bed, early to rise, would underline the fact they both have different work ethics. Coverdale is totally driven and focused, he uses people to get ahead yes, but don't we all. John is more laid back and relaxed though immensely gifted, given that John hasn't released anything in decades and keeps a low profile, no social media at all, and Coverdale is all over social media... I can see now why Coverdale and him didn't work out. Even the band that became the Winery Dogs had to go with Kotzen because John wouldn't get a move on... Such a shame

Sykes guitar work on Slide It In and the 87 record are the singular reasons that both records had such success . I'm sure David knows he owe's his Career the Big successes of it to Sykes . John is still bitter and I cant say I blame him . He blew his load and most creative time of his life on Two records one he got to Tour on and the other he got paid well but never got to Perform live with what I'm sure was his best friend only to be betrayed and replaced . Now its to late to try a Reunion of the two Performers !!

For awhile Viv trashed Metal saying that the devil horns were stupid and he had enough with Dio . So yeah hes a Monster player but ask those who have met him hes been called a dick more then once ? The 1987 album is consistently exciting to listen to. The Kerrang! review was written by a guy called Mark Putterford, who was usually a champion of Coverdale/Whitesnake, but he reviewed it using a pre-release tape, and gave it quite a slagging. He did at least recognize the brilliance of Still of the Night, and when that was a hit single, the album just tore up the charts everywhere.

John sykes is a incredible guitarist and song writer. Check out Blue Murder and his fantastic solo albums. He was fired from the band and wasnt even told. He did an interview on his thoughts when asked. He's back finally with a new album coming out. Song "standing at the Gates of hell. Its unfortunately history, since neither wanna work together anymore.

Its really heartwarming to hear DC be so complementary to John Sykes considering all the bad blood between them both and so sad for us fans, that they never got chance to perform that landmark album all together! This album really showed the world what John sykes was capable of and how he laid out his store with thin lizzy! Look folks , now we see where David Coverdale's touring money went for 1984 and 1985 Slide It In Album . The guy was basically flying to Europe renting villas in France and Portugal . No wonder he was eventually broke and homeless living out of Hotels in 1986 . All David Coverdale did was basically make an album with John Sykes as co-writers . Then the album is a smash hit on radio . David gets with Tawny Kitaen about that time , and then David basically fires his entire band all of the sudden . Obviously she had something to do with convincing David Coverdale that Whitesnake had to be Glam Metal like Ratt to sell albums . Yeah David I'm sure John Sykes thanks you so much for using him to create an epic 1987 album so you could rob him of playing the songs , and sharing the spoils of that album tour . This situation is very similar to the Metallica firing of Dave Mustaine . The major difference is Dave didn't get to record his iconic material on any Metallica albums like John Sykes did on this 1987 album . David Coverdale is a snake , and would love to take full credit for this album if fans were stupid enough to believe it . David has claimed he did 95 percent of the guitar work for this album , which is highly unlikely , and just laughable . I mean David basically sat there and said John Sykes came up with a lot of the main guitar riffs of these songs . All anyone has to do it watch Blue Murder's "Jelly Roll" song , and watch John rip a killer riff on a 12 string acoustic guitar to know HE was the engine of that 1987 Whitesnake album . There's no way David Coverdale came up with any riffs of these Whitesnake songs

J. Sykes did not only write killer guitars.. Sykes was the prime mover behind composition, drums, production etc. Listening to how similar Thunder and Lightning, 1987 and Blue Murder are, it's not hard to tell. Blue Murder is more close to 1987 than any other WS album ever was. And this was the album with which Whitesnake broke the barrier and became big in America. DC is a great singer, that has stepped in the shoulders of giants though (in some cases on their necks)

I think it may have been more a case of Massive egos clashing!!! when there can only be one Captain at the helm!!!..so Coverdale made the decision to dissolve the writing...session...studio band and hire a touring band. Sykes is a brilliant guitarist with an absolutely brilliant and distinct guitar sound...and it such a shame that writing partnership had to end. Does anyone know how the songs rights were split...author / composer ....i am going to check.out APRA/ AMCOS...i hope John Sykes has been getting his royalties all these years!!!...ciao

firing the whole group that made the album 1987 gotta be the most dumbest career move in hard rock's history. Sure John might be a bit hard to work with or he has done some stupid things, so what. You don't have to love the guy, you have to be reasonable enough to get the work done with people, that's called professionalism. Sometimes you have to swallow your own pride for the greater good. David couldn't handle it, he's ego got too big and he got paranoid, firing the whole killer group behind the 1987 album. He could have ruled the America touring with this line up in 1987...instead he chose not to.

I found an interview of Sykes later on where he admitted that David was really upset and was thinking if he still is. That's kinda weird cause David was the one who fired the band. Can't think any other reason for this than the thing that John was propably trying to take over the whole 1987 project when David was recovering. We all make mistakes, John should let it go...

@@thegozzy true what comes to Coverdale, if you've done it once you will do it again... screwing bandmates until it comes a pattern. Neil Murray just said in his interview that Sykes actually left the band, he was pissed how the album was being mixed and had no whatsoever power on how he's guitars would end up sounding in the album. Maybe the situation was so bad already that he left before he was getting fired. Keith Olsen and Coverdale were the duo behind how the album would sound and John was being left out. Keith Olsen said later on that the album was mostly recorded again cause the guitars were out of tune and Dann Huff played them, weird 🤔. I know in an out playing styles, phrasing etc of those two players and clearly it's John on the album. But why would a high profile producer flat out lie, apparently he was pissed too for mr. Sykes just like David 😆. John said that after he was out of the band Olsen tried even to contact him so that he would play the solo for Here I Go Again. So yep what a mess 😆, there was propably a lot of fighting Sykes vs team Coverdale/Olsen. Pretty embarrassing for a high profile producer to flat out lie on things like that just saying...

@@mickeyguide3112 you know, so many things have been told, and it's difficult to make out the full truth. I believe the devil is in the detail with this one; the recorded guitars indeed sounded as if they were out of tune, as far as DC was concerned, due to the use of many effects (Sykes is a massive user of chorus, which basically slightly tunes/detunes the notes, delays etc), and then Dan Huff was hired to re-record the parts so that DC can do his vocals. This is because JS was asked, and he wouldn't do it anymore. But Dan Huff's recordings were only used so that DC could record his vocals. Then they re-added sykes's guitars. I don't think Sykes is not playing in this album. With all due respect to the legend that Dan Huff is, this album screams Sykes, all except for the re-mixes. The Blue Murder from 1989 (or as I like to call it, the "1987 on steroids") is proof of that. Do if you will, a search for an interview between Vandenberg and Eddie Trunk; Vandenberg was actually in the studio when Sykes went to confront DC for being fired.

Sad thing is, those songs Sykes wrote for that iconic 1987 Whitesnake album could've easily found their way onto a Thin Lizzy "comeback" release had Phil Lynott gotten himself into rehab right after that successful 'Thunder & Lightning' tour back in '83 (RIP). Never cared much for Coverdale, dude's so full of it to the point he felt he didn't even need Sykes around anymore at the time BUT HE DID! >:-(

One of my all time favourite bands. I am 67 years old but was a Purple fanatic from 17 years old and thought Coverdale filled massive shoes. When Whitesnake formed I was very unsure of how this would unfold but as a huge fan of John Sykes I thought, If he is joining Whitesnake then something big was happening. Something big happened and I swear it was John Sykes who elevated them to where they went, not Coverdale, Taking nothing away from David Coverdale as he was a phenomenal musician, the unreachable talent of John Sykes was a catapult in their success:.

Hmmm...great album. First album I learned note for note. Very influential in how I approach playing and great tone. Sykes has great tone in the album. That being said, I’m a fan of both Whitesnake and Sykes. Although it was a shame things didn’t work out, even Neil Murray conveyed parts of DC’s story of Sykes “suggesting” they look for another singer since David wasn’t feeling the vocals after his surgery. Sykes was a MTV looking guitarist, so DC looking for a more visual friendly band doesn’t wash. Sorry, John. As for the riffs, that’s what guitarists in bands do: come up with the riffs while the vocalist lends direction and vocal melodies. Let’s just say, both entities didn’t fair as well after the 87 album. Although, in terms of success after the 87 album, it has to go to Whitesnake and DC. Monetarily, it’s easy to measure.

The whole Whitesnake thing lost its last bit of blues and soul when Sykes and Murray left. Sykes had a bluesiness about him and was from that english 70s guitarschool. Slip of the tounge has absolutely no soul and it's asswhipped by Blue Murders first album. That is the real follow up to 1987.

The original of Here I go again was so much better, more raw and less production, should have left it alone despite the financial success of the re recording, it's not all about money sometimes.

So many people keep crying over Sykes. Of course, Sykes is incredible on this album. But, seriously, people keep saying how dumb it was to lose him. But, who's career fizzled, and who's continued. He followed Sykes up with Vai. DC has always had stellar players. Quit fixating on Sykes, as great as he was. Listen to Blue Murder and other stuff he did. His playing is awesome, but his lyrics are total cheese. And his singing is mediocre.

I don't know how you can claim Syke's lyrics are cheese, when Coverdale admittedly writes nothing but love songs. And some of the stuff Sykes wrote for those Blue Murder Albums - Blue Murder, Ptolemy, She Knows - seemed fine to me. Frankly, Sykes sounds so much like Coverdale, than when Jelly Roll first came out on radio, I thought it was the latest Whitesnake album. You listen to Carmine Appice's (sp:?) explanation as to what happened to Blue Murder, you realize how badly that group got shafted. I have both albums. They were outstanding (especially Nothin' But Trouble). Shafted by Whitesnake. Shafted in Blue Murder. I can honestly see why Sykes essentially walked away from the industry.

@@jeffpotts6187 yeah, you have good points. I love Sykes playing, and Coverdale is pretty cheesy when power ballads became the thing. I do wish they had worked it out. I love Coverdale...but he ran his group kinda like Dio did. They are the focus, even though the band is so important to the sound.

Sykes sings about 600 times better than Coverdale on the stage. No i'm not talking about Coverdale getting old and stuff. He always was an awful live singer.

@@jeffpotts6187 unpopular opinion, yet 100% true. I have yet to find a recorded live performance of DC where he sings in key without dropping a song at least a step down. His voice is unique, yet he seriously lacks capability. Sykes's Blue Murder tour though, yeeesh... Also I saw him live with his version of Thin Lizzy in 2006, where he left half the solos on Scott Gorham and focused on singing.. Liking his voice is subjective, but that he can actually sing, is a fact.
