Whitetail Buck SHEDS Antler on Trail Cam Video (RARE CAPTURE!)

A whitetail deer buck I named 'One Side' shed his left antler in front of my trail cam Jan. 7/2021. Capturing a whitetail deer shedding an antler on video is very rare, so I am pretty pumped!
Watch video of me finding a match set of 2021 shed antlers: • Match Set of Whitetail...
Looks like only a few people have ever captured the process of a whitetail deer buck shedding an antler on video, and in my case, a trail cam video. Definitely the highlight of my trail cam and shed hunting 'career.'
Why do whitetail deer bucks shed their antlers? It's due to a drop in testosterone following the rut. When a buck's testosterone levels fall, it causes a weakening in the tissue and bone at the antler base (pedicle) to the point where the antlers simply fall off. Here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the antlers shed in January and February.
This whitetail deer buck broke off his right antler in July during the velvet stage when I first captured him on a trail camera video. Since then I have been photographing and gathering footage of him, with the hope that I would find his remaining antler when it shed. Little did I know he would shake it loose right in front of my trail camera.
There's something cool about watching a deer shedding antlers. Make sure you have your volume on and listen for that 'snap'!

That is fresh cedar from an adjacent tree that was toppled in a storm. Cedar is a main staple for our whitetail here but they have browsed it so high that much is out of reach. I put down a small pile each time I visit the cams to help them out. Although it looks like twigs here, it had greenery on which they stripped off the night before. They eat it like candy.

Cheers, Fred. Yes, post-rut this pair of bucks were buddies - eating together, bedding down not far from each other, following each other around. So, I'm guessing the scent and visual aspect caught his attention. The buck that lost his antler is still the dominant one of the two - and he'll let the other guy know if he gets too close when feeding, lol. Funny to watch.

Not the first video capture I've gotten where a deer smells a fallen antler - must be instinctive.

What an awesome video! Growing up shed hunting, I had always wanted to witness a deer/elk shedding it's antlers. Unfortunately that never happened so this is the next best! Good looking shed too! Too bad he broke the other off. I feel like if he hadn't, the one that fell off could have knocked into his other side and that fall off too when he shook his head.

So, he shed the right 'nub' two days later. I searched high and low, but came up empty handed. With snow on the ground and the antler being maybe an inch, it would be like finding a needle in a haystack, lol.

@@JustinHoffman You let me down man! lol That thing would be damn near impossible to find with snow. Maybe sheer luck will have you stumble upon it after snow melt. I'm actually a little surprised it shed that easily. I thought it might have to be pushed off by new growth.
