Planted 1 brassica plot this past Thursday after my corn field failed. Rain in forecast for 5 days couldn’t pass it up. Had some rain so far but just like the last 2 years it splits my area. Way behind this year on plotting because of getting shingles. I have been down for a month with the nerve pain. Never knew that it would be this bad. I recommend getting a vaccine to prevent them if you had chicken pox

@Paul rain was forecasted from 70% to 90% for most of last week. I planted the day before the forecasted rain thinking for sure with 4 out of six days of rain almost inevitable, it actually would. But it never came. I added more seed yesterday as there are three days this week at above 70% chance of more than one inch of rain. I’ve been doing the rain dance since late May…I just wore my legs out lol. It’s frustrating seeing rain all around my property, even within a couple miles, only to totally miss my area. I need to rethink how I’ll tackle dry conditions moving forward. I can’t afford to spend so much time and effort just to see it all fail because of lack of rain. Hope you get some rain soon! Good luck!

We did the same Mike.....although we're near West Branch (northern lower peninsula). We were expecting a lot of rain starting yesterday (Sunday) morning, but we only got one 15 minute rain shower. Sometimes I feel like we have a bubble over our area that keeps the rain away...lol! It looks like today (Monday) is going to make up for yesterday's fail. Based on what I see on the radar, I think any of us in Michigan that just recently planted should be in good shape!

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, what I would do is add 50#s of peas to that mix, then add 5 #s of tillage radish. The oats really don't add much unless planted later...but then that's too late for the beans and peas. You don't want to ever have more than around 20#s of oats per acre if planted early at the same time that brassica should be planted

Jeff, to answer your question from the last video, I’m in Mineral County WV. I learned from last year that planting late August is too late for my property. At en elevation of 2,200 feet, out first frost is early October and first freeze is mid to late October. So planting as close to August 1 is paramount. The soil is light, which just exaggerates the dry conditions. My hope was to have buckwheat knee high to roll down to help with moisture, but it failed due to the drought. I’ve researched switch and it looks like Dakotah is the best variety to handle the driest conditions. I dressed over the brassicas yesterday as rain is forecasted for early week, so praying it comes to fruition. If all else fails, do you think rye around Labor Day would be a good idea? I’m out of options for this season if the rain doesn’t come this week. As you say, the plots might only be a 3 or 4, but it would be better than the 1 or 2 in the surrounding areas.

I was trying to plant this week, but the rain forecast for rain is horrible. Looks like we're waiting another week or two to plant. Is it better to wait or build a portable watering system to not have to worry about rain. I only have 3 separate acre plots that are relatively easy to access.

Planted my brassicas in late July already (we had some lovely rain). I have some nice tops going. I've noticed that the deer don't really go after my brassicas until really late and this gives me larger bulbs for when the snow is blowing. We have so many soy fields around, deer aren't wanting for much right now. It's fun to watch the deer stick their faces down through a foot of snow to dig out a softball sized turnip in January. I'll do a winter rye plot in mid September too.

Thanks for another great video Jeff!! I am in SW MO and we had an extreme drought this summer (still kind of in it). Had a stretch of several days of 50-80% chance of rain so I planted. We were supposed to get 2-3 inches over the 3 days. We ended up with.25 inches of rain. I added some water to it with my hillbilly water machine (food grade tote and a water pump and hose). 6 days after planting we finally got the 2.5 inches of rain. Started to see some sprouting yesterday but the soil is once again drying out. I will add some more water today and thru this week as we are still continuing to stay hot and only supposed to get a 1/2 inch of rain. Hopefully that will get me thru. Planning on looking at first part of September for a good chance of rain to plant my cereal rye and winter wheat. Had a few weeds left in those areas so I sprayed them again and should be almost weed free!! Looking forward to your planting timing video that is coming up. Thanks again for all the great info!!!

Hi Troy! I really focus on having my buckwheat ready by late July and then watch about a 2 to 3 week window...early or late of that, for rain. That puts me planting at 4 week to 6.5 weeks old buckwheat. It may go to seed a bit which isn't bad. I think a LOT of folks plant way too early! For example good soil in central IN would be a late June planting on good soil. I hear of folks who already planted in MAY. If you watch that window tho, it will be a great range for the buckwheat and give you a lot of flexibility for rain. However I would wait if needed, even if that put me towards the 7 or 8 week window for growth. I would likely then smash, kill and broadcast when the tall buckwheat breaks down a bit. No sense trying to seed in 5' high buckwheat...

How much rain in the forecast is too much. I am in N.B. Canada and things are unusually dry. However we have 52 to 79 cms coming in the next 5 days. If I am planting oats and white clover will they rot? Thanks in advance, big fan of your shows.

Hi Jeff, opened up my first food plot this year and planting as you advise with tillage radish and brassica for the first year. I'm opening two more next year. Should those two be planted tillage radish and brassica, while the other one would now go to one side green blend and other side brassica? Hope this makes sense, as I know you mention all plots should contain same type of food.

That’s my plan👍 start with the radish/brassica and switch new year to the green blend, while adding more area and new rad/bras.

You could probably get by with a light oats and peas (maybe buckwheat too) green blend and other half brassica if you have a cultipacker. Tillage raddish on both halves and then follow up with rye on non brassica side 3-5 weeks later

Jeff, have been using the no till method for two years and have been seeing great success. Question: Can or should I plant winter rye with my brassica plots 5-6 weeks later? Or is this only done if I have wholes or plot doesn’t take? I know that you can do this with just radishes, correct? Thank you. Central Wisconsin get some great rain and weather for plots.

Good morning Jeff! Getting good rains here in Wisconsin this weekend and over by you in Minnesota by the looks of it. Quick question, do you have any experience planting a grain sorghum for deer as an alternative to corn for a late season food source? Cheaper and easier to put in than corn. I’m trying some this year to see how it works in my area in northern Wisconsin. Thanks for the insight!

I planted some sorguhm two years ago in southeast Mn. It was easy to plant and came up good but the deer never touched it that I had seen. Even in the late season. But you never know your deer might eat it

Spray first with GLY and 2-4D, give it a 2-3 weeks then plow/plant. You'll have better luck even though you may unearth a few weed seeds when planting.

I have had this issue and find success just carrying forward with the seed/cultipack/spray combo. If it's unruly high(4'+) pack down and then seed the brassicas.

Planted you fall power greens in my food plot just about 2 weeks ago 2 days before expected rain. Since then we’ve been in the mid-upper 70’s and the rain seems to have missed my southern MI zip code. We again expect some rain this weekend but how do i know if my seed is still viable? I ordered and received another 25lb bag of fall power greens today. Do I plant them and risk over seeding? Or save them for next year? this is a .3 Acre hunting plot that has been soil tested, fertilized, plot started (liquid lime), and seeded. Can you give me any advice? Thanks.

Great information Jeff thanks, as always, its a shot in the dark. I was watching the weather and they predicted 80% chance of rain two days after my target plant date and 60% the day after that so I proceeded to plant my plots. The next day that 80% went 40% and the day after that went to 20%. Not really surprised by that but what I find so laughable is all the talk we hear about climate change predictions, yet with the all the scientific instrumentation and weather models they have to review, flipping a coin would be just as accurate😊.

Sprayed my buckwheat yesterday at time of planting. No access to cultipacker. Fair amount of weeds in the buckwheat. Can I spray 2-4 days later and still not hurt the seed on the ground??? Good 1+ inch of rain today.
