Whitmer High School, Toledo, Ohio. February 1997. Conrad Lippincot's WW2 2nd and 6th Hour Classes engage in a teacher designed simulation (his design). The Simulation take about 7 class periods
This Simulation is preceded by approximately two weeks of direct teacher instruction of WWI and summary of Blitzkrieg tactics developed in large part by Heinz Guderian and his book Achtung Panzer!, and Biography of Adolf Hitler to 1925, and his Steps to War (in the 1930s) . Teacher methods include lecture, teacher role-play acting, and a map of Europe of 1939. At least a day is spent on HOW to Learn For Success in this class. Note taking is required, and checked by the teacher for homework credit on a regular basis, usually prior to a test.
The "game" is set in Europe of 1939, and an outline map dominates on an overhead projector and is always in view.. Seven countries are represented (about 4 students to a country): USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and the USSR. Students are told that while they may have some choice as to which county they will be part of, the final decision belongs to the teacher. They are told that the game cannot be played unless ALL seven countries are represented - in almost equal numbers
Each country has a ROLE CARD, which gives military stats, and suggestions as to how to proceed and negotiate with the other countries. Periodically the teacher will read a news bulletins (based on real events). Students may leave the classroom to negotiate in private in adjacent halls and stairwells. Students are given credit for participation and are also encouraged to give speeches, and sign treaties for credit. The students walk away from this with a better understanding of the years 1933 to 1939, but also the backgrounds: WWI and the rise of Fascism in Europe. Upon conclusion (approx 7 days), a unit on the Holocaust begins, with students reading aloud survivor testimonies. The last 2 days are used for each country to have two (2) five minute turns, similar to a board game.
Viewing these classes, I was happy to hear them use conepts taught - in their speeches and negotiations. Blitzkieg, Facsim, Comuminm, and the leaders of evryones country.
