You can't have quality loving relationships with others if you don't love yourself. There is nothing wrong with loving yourself and having confidence and dignity. As a child you get this from your parents and if you don't, like I didn't, life gets hard at a very early stage and then you strugle later on like I do now. Do you really think that Jesus hated himself or had a very low selfesteem?

You shouldn't hate anybody, especially yourself, becouse if you do then there is something wrong with your relationship with God. You can (and should) love yourself, be self confident and have dignity and still be humble and modest to others and worship and admire God. Modesty doesn't equal self hatered. If you hate yourself it doesn't mean you are a bad person it just means you are unable to have quality, loving realtionships with your husband/wife,children,family,friends.. because that self hate will make you unconsciously do or say things that will hurt other people around you. I don't think my parents didn't love me, they just made me feel that way because that's the way they feel about themselfs. The important thing is to recognize where this self hate comes from and deal with those emotions, and of course forgive, I did. :) And now, as the song says, I'm learning to love myself and hope to be able to give this love to my kids so they have childhood they deserve. I'm glad I will break this negative chain of self hate in my family. God bless you

I have an old iPod in my garage that is constantly on shuffle. I was doing a project in my garage recently and this song came on. When you are working on something song songs tend to stick with you later on. I was repeating these lyrics in my head later and realized how powerful of a message this is. Truly an amazing song and something our youth need to desperately hear. I grew up in church and was fortunate to be taught self respect and dignity by my parents and the people I was surrounded by. Whitney Houston is one of only a few divas that made me stop and take notice. I was a fan of hers ever since I heard her version of I will always love you. She wasn't that bad of an actress either. I loved her as the fairy godmother in the 1997 version of Cinderella.
