This was the 1st track off her 2nd album - much more pop than the 1st album, but Whitney could do no wrong at that time!! Man, she could sing!! "So Emotional" was another great dance track from that album. The sound is soooo 80's, but her vocals are always on point!!

The year was 1987, in the month of June, class trip to Florence, Italy, playing this song up and down on the cassette player, those were the days, was really nice there, I was so young, a clean cut & handsome 6 ft. tall very friendly kid, who was also counting the months until turning 18, later in September that year. Now that's almost 35 years ago till the day, wow!

Back when Whitney was young, innocent, and cloud sing her heart out! My favorite Whitney video because she’s so happy and it’s a great song!
@ChrisC709
@ChrisC709 2 жыл бұрын
Whitney was never "innocent". That's the image Clive Davis wanted her to portray for the buying public to get more record sales. And it worked. But once she hooked up with Bobby Brown, more of herself came out(for better or for worse) publicly and she didn't care at that point.
@korver1

I doubt she was happy after what we know now. Amazing voice and entertainer. Sad human.
@Beatles4Sale.
@Beatles4Sale. 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisC709 I looked up some history about this era. She made this video in 1987. Won a Grammy for best live performance. Would not meet Bobby Brown for another two years in 1989. They married in 1992. So I will keep my rose colored glasses on. At least from what I’ve been reading about her life the drug problem did not start by 1987. Maybe she had other issues? I can’t really tell from the few articles. Maybe you can fill me in what I’m missing. But I still say I’ve never seen her look happier than in this video.
@ChrisC709
@ChrisC709 2 жыл бұрын
Stop being so naive. Bobby wasn't the cause of her drug problems. Whitney's brother. Gary and Whitney herself was experimenting with drugs way before Bobby. It's just that when she met Bobby, she took it to a whole new level.
@Marc-zi5cq
@Marc-zi5cq 2 жыл бұрын
@@Beatles4Sale. I've seen several docus on Whitney. She took drugs before Bobby but it did not get out of control until after Bodyguard came out. Bobby actually was more of a drinker before he met Whitney. Whitney stuggled with alot of things, including having to hide her relationship with Robin as her mother and allegedly the record industry would have never accepted it. Even Bobby said, if Robin was still in Whitneys life, she would probably be alive now. I do think everyone blaming Bobby is a bit unfair though. Sure he was not the greatest influence but 1. he is alive, so whatever addictions he had, so far they were not as bad enough to kill him and 2. Whitney was a grown woman when she met him, several years older than him, pushing 30. I love her, she*s one of the most amazing vocalists ever but yeah we need to look beyond what Clive David and her record company wanted to sell( wholesome cute girl singing pop songs that appeal to all kinds of audiences).

✨Whitney was so next level beautiful she hurts my eyes!! 🤩😍 I remember first seeing her in the Greatest Love Of All video and thinking she was like a real life Barbie (or Christie) doll but wayyyy more gorgeous (her ultra 80s styling in this video is PURE Mattel 💖). Then I saw the cover of her Whitney album, where she looks like a straight up goddess, in the window of a record store. Weird kid that I was I stared at it, then walked on, then walked back and hung out by the window just gazing at the photo trying to memorise every aspect of her. It was like I was trying to understand some sacred algebra hidden in her face. I love how in this video about dancing for a song about dancing they let her get away with barely dancing a single step. Whitney obviously had all the rhythm, but it didn’t really translate to being much of a dancer, so they made the concept about a bunch of dancing dudes trying to impress her. Clever. Not that she ever needed to dance with a superhuman voice like that. That extended “heeeeaaaaaaaaT” with the extra plosive “T” at the end, and just any moment she opens up her majestic vocals. It’s like the sun bursting from a cloudy sky. I only really commit to full fan mode for artists who write and mastermind their own material, whether solo or in collaboration, but Whitney holds a very special place in my pantheon of wonders. She really was, and is, a true legend.

I was so young. I had a vhs tape with this video, Greatest Love Of All, etc. All from that time frame. This video in particular was my gateway to loving dance. I would watch it and make up my own dances and try to follow along. I'd already been a vocal lover from a very, very young age... so young I don't remember not singing. The dancing came a few years later. I know I had to be in single digits. All the huge divas, icons I grew up with are gone. Only Madonna is left standing out of my personal icons. George Michael, of course, Prince, Whitney and Michael Jackson, I still wish to this day that damn Barbie Doll I had of him had never been played with, I'd be rich, lol.

Such a great song. I associate this song really strongly with driving with my dad from Jersey down to Georgia to visit his family during the summer of 1987. It was HUGE. Crossing from state to state every radio station was playing it whether it was an R&B station or pop. I’m sure my dad got sick of it by the end of that trip. 😂

This song was her first single of her second album ''Whitney''. In US, ''Whitney'' was the first album by a female artist to produced four n.1 singles at a same album in US. ''I Wanna Dance With Somebody'' was the first of four US n.1 singles of the album. It's at the same period who Michael Jackson five US n.1 singles with his album ''Bad'' (''I Just Can't Stop Loving You'', ''Bad'', ''The Way You Make Me Feel'', ''Man in the Mirror'' and ''Dirty Diana'') and George Michael, who like Whitney Houston, produced four US n.1 singles of the ''Faith'' album (''Faith'', ''Father Figure'', ''One More Try'' and ''Monkey''). This song was timeless 35 years after the released.

@@EmpressReacts I waiting to your reaction of her three others n.1 US singles of this album (''Didn't We Almost Have It All'', ''So Emotional'' and ''Where Do Broken Hearts Go''), because this second album cimented her has a icon of 80's. If the first album (Self-titled) was the best-selling debut album of history, the second album ''Whitney'' cimeted her has a icon of the 80's and battled records with four US n.1 singles and the first female artist to debuted at n.1 in the albums charts when it's came out. ''I Wanna Dance With Somebody'' create a huge runaway to incite the peoples to buying the second album when the album came out.

***(80's) WHITNEY TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...now, get with THIS! (5:46)...ha-HAAA!! ...WHAT else can I add, to this CLASSIC track!??? ...everything's been SAID! ...but I'll soldier ON.... - ...This was the VERY LAST track to be added to the IMPORTANT 2nd Album from Whitney; her Label was holding a tune called, "If I Say Yes", to be the BIG hit tune for Whitney, but Deniece Pearson (from UK R&B Group Five Star) heard the tune, and snatched it, for the "Silk & Steel" Album in 1986.... ....Clive Davis (of course) called the "How Will I Know" Songwriters Boy Meets Girl (George Merrill & Shannon Rubicam) to write a new tune FAST, and they came up "I Wanna Dance" changed to, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)", and it became HUUUUGE, HUGE, HUGE.... - ...her label was gonna release the Album track "For The Love Of You" first, after 5 Star snatched "If I Say Yes", but they got "IWDWS" SO late, they stuck STICKERS on the artwork of "For The Love..", to cover the title, when they went with "Didn't We Almost Have It All", as the 2nd single.... - ...Whitney's Album, and "IWDWS" were released June 1987, and the LP debuted at #1, making Whitney the FIRST Woman - and, BLACK WOMAN - ...to debut at #1 on the LP charts! ...She OWNED 1988, having FIVE #1 from the LP ("Love Will Save The Day" hit #9 Pop, but hit #1 on the Dance charts, making it 5 #1's.... ...and, HERE'S the Top 10 when Whitney hit the top, July, 1987.... 10. Wanted Dead Or Alive - Bon Jovi 9. Just To See Her - Smokey Robinson 8. Diamonds - Herb Alpert (feat. Janet Jackson) 7. Shakedown (from "Bev. Hills Cop 2") - Bob Seger 6. Songbird - Kenny G. 5. Always - Atlantic Starr 4. Alone - Heart 3. In Too Deep - Genesis 2. Head To Toe - Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam 1. ***I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)*** - Whitney Houston (1st wk. of 3 weeks)

Classic. This was such a huge #1 in Germany, they still play it at Gay clubs and on every 80s night. Must be her biggest song after I Will Always Love You. I also prefer Whitneys more R&B stuff from the late 90s...in the 80s she was mostly Pure Pop. I heard she got booed at the Soul Train Awards in 1990/1991 as the audience thought she or her sound was too white, which upset her. She sold 20 million of her first two albums though so white people must have bought them alot :D Like we said before, i like this simply for Whitneys amazing voice, she was impeccable in the 80s and 90s vocally and this is fun and catchy as hell, so not surprised it shot to #1 everywhere. She's an icon!

This was unquestionably pop music (her “How Will I Know” video similar vibes, including unexpected video shout out to Aretha Franklin, who her mother sang backup for). Early on Whitney was often criticized, particularly by the Black community, for being “too pop”, even sadly booed at award shows when nominated for R&B categories. Eventually appreciation for her voice became more universal. Undoubtedly one of the top voices of her generation.
