I was in the Army and deployed to Saudi Arabia for the Gulf War. There was around 30 of us up in the wee hours of the morning to watch the Super Bowl. We all stood at attention and rendered a salute during the song. There wasn't a dry eye in the tent by the end of it.

I'm an American and in my 62 years of life I've NEVER heard anything better than Whitney's rendition. I may have thought I did until January 1991, then I knew that I hadn't and would never hear anything better. It brings tears to my eyes and gives me goosebumps at the same time. I don't know why I get so emotional every time I hear it, but I do. RIP Whitney and thank you for sharing your talents with the world. You are missed. God Bless America!!!

Whitney was full aware of how important this was. SHE NAILED IT! no one can tell me she didnt feel the Patriotism singing this. I got out of the submarine Force in July of '91. The support from our Nation was unreal! But, i felt guilty, cause our Veitnam Vets deserved it , they, in fact, even after how they where treated , where the first to welcome us home. Heard some damn good renditions of this profound song, and some came close to Whitney, but her version is still IMHO THE best version. She + The Blue Angels, that is. From her effortlessness, vocal control, pitch, power, elegance, volume adjustment, combined with the orchestral timing, then the crescendo of the flyover? Chills and tears for the Beauty and Art on display here. P.S. - Thanks for reacting to this, Blokes. Many people don't know this about Whitney Houston's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. It was Whitney Houston herself insisted that the orchestra change the notes of the song. She wanted a gospel feel to the song, which means the song had to be slowed down. The allows her to sing and elongated the words. So. You not only hear every word clearly but you feel it, every word she sings. She got some push back from the orchestra because know one has ever asked that it be done this way. They were not sure off how this would work. However, Whitney pushed hard for this song to be structured this way. People accused her of lip singing. You will never find a gospel singer lip singing. They don't have to they have sang in the church choir for many years. They have proper training. Whitney Houston could stand there flat footed, barefoot and sing. If you ever listen to anyone else sing the Star Spangled Banner, you will notice the song, the musical notes is much faster. You don't hear each and every word annunciated. It's to fast. I bet you this is the first time you understood and heard each and every word of the Star Spangled Banner. There is a video of music producer Narda Michael Warren who worked with Whitney Houston on that rendition of the song explains just how Whitney Houston wanted the to sound and her push on the orchestra to for the first time in history change the structure of the song. Whitney Houston knew what she was doing.

This version gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. And to this day, every time a person sings the anthem, I go back to this version. It’s just so incredibly beautiful and patriotic.

Have watched this so many times, she is just stunning in every way. Have seen things this might have been prerecorded and lip-synched... even if it was, she still did it in the studio - no ProTools or autotune.. doesn't matter. Still stunning.

This wasn't just an amazing performance this was historical Whitney Houston's performance of The National Anthem became a hit single it peaked at #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100,[3] and was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA. This made Houston the first musical act to take the national anthem Top 10 in the US, and have it certified platinum3x it sold 1 million copies, and she was only 27 years old It's just amazing she was amazing and was and still is to me The greatest female singer of all time.

I'm an American and I love that I was born here and everything, but it's nothing to be proud of .I just accomplished coming out of my mom in this location. I mean being proud to be an American is like taking pride in a participation trophy. Again I also love being an American and I could not imagine living anywhere else besides maybe Japan, and that's a hard just maybe like if I couldn't live in America I'm settling on Japan, because as a general statement I just seemed to gel with most people there.

@@bigbk3278 No I don't feel you here because, it's nothing to be proud of. I'm not proud I'm a Native American that just happens to be what I am. Taking pride in something you didn't accomplish or is accomplished for you is ridiculous. It seems like a nice comforting thing but it leads to things like a nationalism or xenophobia or racism, because it's just another way to other people who aren't you. I love that I'm Native American and that we have a rich history and culture I guess.. I love that I'm an American and live here too, but taking pride in it is not logical at all. My parents had the sex ,my mother carried the pregnancy to term, and the doctors delivered me. What do I have to be proud of? It was all done by other people not me so taking pride in it is undeserved hubris. If I was a refugee that escaped a war torn zone on foot and got asylum in America and then took the classes and became a citizen on top of that then I would be proud to be an American, because it took tons effort to achieve it.

Whitney's version is fantastic but it was pre-recorded. So I put Lillian Garcia as one of the best live versions ever. Her accapella version 2 days after 911 never gets old. That was the first mass gathering after the 911 attacks. She has always sang it with respect & honor for the WWE

@@swingriah6537 what is your point? Everyone sings to recorded stuff. I do & I suck as a singer. The whole point is it was not a live version. She did sing at some sort of military gathering live and it was great. But somehow people miss the whole point.
