When I eventually get to the Philippines (dreaming of the day), I would've learned some from watching maybe some soapies (Telenor Vella's right?). Great video Whitney! There is a Filipino dialect called Chavacano which is Mexican Spanish based. FYI there are some informative videos on YOutube about this dialect. The drummer is Mike Shapiro who is Katrina's long time boyfriend and collaborator. Keep up the good reviews.

Until this video I didn't know that Spanish was also influential to their language -- not just the fact that they were under Spanish rule for almost half of a millennium. I noticed after I uploaded this video that in a video of Katrina speaking (getting her 100k play button) she said "pero" ("but") and a few other Spanish words and was curious if Spanish was somehow incorporated into their language. It makes sense thinking about it but I hadn't really heard any of them speak very much, so until then the thought didn't cross my mind. Thank you for telling the specific dialect, I was curious what it was. Being of Italian descent -- and working at acquiring citizenship there, I'm trying to learn the language, but I know there are many dialects as well. My family was from Sicily, so Sicilian is a completely different language from Italian -- and more complicated in my opinion. This response has become a novel, I apologize, but it's just interesting to talk about different languages and culture. :)

My father spoke fluent spanish as did his father because of Spanish rule. We Filipinos are sometimes called the Latinos of Asia. My mother went to the Philippines with my Dad and said she could communicate fine with my grandfather. The Philippines stopped teaching Spanish in schools in 1987. My last name is Avelino. I once met an Italian entertainer who after I introduced myself to him called me Pizano. He then explained that surname was Italian and that there is even a town named Avelino in Italy. I looked it up and sure enough it was there. It's on my bucket list to visit there after Covid. I recently did a Y-DNA to find out my Father's ancestral lineage and sure enough I have Italian in my DNA. Somewhere in time there was a Italian sailor who got on a Spanish galleon, met and married a Filipina and gave her his name. Talk about the Philippines being a melting pot. Good to meet you Cousin :)

@@apastoys5153 "paisano" or "paisan" is also a term for "friend" or "comrade' in Italian too. A lot of times Italian Americans, when they find other Italian Americans they'll call them "paisan" like saying "ah, friend..." like "ah, someone who gets it". I have an ancestor way down the line from Spain as well -- it's like waaaaaay back there.

Spanish subject is part of School Curriculum in college before in the Philippines and the country has been under Spanish colony for 400 yrs. before Americans came for another 50 yrs rule-that’s why as you will notice, Filipinos names are Spanish names-fyi👍

I could hear a Spanish influence on the language when I was watching Katrina talk in a video where she got her Silver Play Button. I heard “pero” (“but”) and a couple other Spanish words blended in. I mentioned in a response to another comment that I was curious about why Filipinos have Spanish sounding names (either first or last) so I looked up their history a little bit. In school we never really studied the Philippines. I knew that the Spanish had conquered the land but I had no idea for how long. After that it’s not surprising Spanish left a mark in the language. I think it’s pretty.

hi, i dont know if i am correct or not but i’ve just learned from a friend that the consonant “v” is correct to pronounce as “w” and “w” as “v”., just to validate this, i have heard many people pronouncing “v” as “w” and vice versa., just like the word “Hawaii”, they pronounce it as “Havaii”. so i believe Katrina just had a research on this if that makes sense., 😁

I've heard it too, and I've hear "ll" (pronounced like "y" in English) pronounced like "jah", almost sounding French like in "bella" -- "beh-ya" comes out "beh-jah". It's the same word, but the dialect is different.

Meh...It's kinda underwhelming. Spain is a good choice, but she didn't get to the good part. Oye como Va is the only real Latin tune in the medley, and it's pretty cliche. The material is a waste of Katrina's amazing vocal talent.
