The Khojas are a mainly Nizari Isma'ili Shia community of people originating in India.
Derived from the Persian Khwaja, a term of honor, the word Khoja is used to refer to Lohana Rajputs who converted to Islam from Hinduism.
Dr. Iqbal Akhtar is an associate professor with a dual appointment in the departments of Religious Studies and Politics & International Relations in the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs. He completed his doctorate at the University of Edinburgh’s New College School of Divinity. His current work explores the origin of the Khōjā peoples in the Subcontinent through extant oral traditions known as the kahaṇī in Sindhi, Gujarati, and Hindustani. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses as well as independent studies which include but are not limited to Islamic Political Thought, Advanced Interpretations of the Quran, Voice of the Prophet, Islamic Faith and Society, Women in Islam, and Islamic Mysticism (Sufism). He is the research director of the Western Indian Ocean Studies program and director of the Jain Studies program at FIU (USA).

No Voice from Peer sb Dr. sb, how can you skip the Aga Khan III from the creation of Pakistan & the khoja Imam?? Ismaili institutions are not just in West but in Pakistan/India/Afganistan/Tajikistan/bangaldesh/Afriqa/USA/UK/Canada/Central Asia/Austerias/Purtogal/Sriya/badakshan and various other part of world. Sindh/Kachi/Katiywari is not differences but different civilization but yet Ismailis. Thanks for this podcast

The traders between Iran and India are Khawajas or Khojas (Khawaja means respected businessmen) Omani Khojas are Lawatis, East Africans are also Khojas and an extremely rich/educated community. Khojas Shia/Khoja Ismaili/Bohra/Sunni Bohra are all Gujurati Khojas

I think host's knowledge about Ismailis, Aga Khanis was more to the point. Not sure how many people want to know about the Ismailis. Shia has several branches and sub sects. Some of them are Ismailis, Ishnaishirs (majority), Bhoras, etc. Khojas is ethinic strand now they are Ismilis, Sunis and Ithnairs Khojas.

Frank admission that when in minority claiming Hindu worship. Once they became majority switched to Muslim identity. There are Sunnis, Shias and Aghakhanis who have living Imam Aghakhan.

Please avoid to mix KHOJA (Asna Ashri) with ISMAELI (Agha Khani) both communities are different by belief. From Gujrat (india) Communities like Bohra (followers of 7 imam and currently following Dae ) Ismaeli (Followers of 6 Imam) Khoja (Asna Ashri) followers of 12 imam

There are Khoja Shia Ismaili NizDi, Shia Asnashari, Shia Ismaili Bohra(they are not 7 Imamer, their Imam goes beyond Imam Jafer e Sadiq)..There are also Sunni Khojas.. Quaid e Azam was also Shia Ismaili Nizari

Not all khojas are ismailis, not all ismailis are khojas. Throughout, the two terms have been interchangeably used. Very confusing. Oftentimes, misleading. Appreciate the effort but viewers beware, neem hakeem, khatra-i-jan.

He was born in the Ismaili Khoja family (Aga Khani) but at the time of his wife's funeral Ismaili leaders did not allow her body to be buried in the Islami way as she was non-Muslim (Zorastrian) so he took the body to the other branch of khojas the Ithnashri Khojas who allowed the burial and from that point, he changed his faith from Ismaili Khoja to Ishnashri Khoja.

Yes, history tell us that he had converted some says Isnashari some days Sunnis [however looking at his association with the Aga Khan III and the Aga Khan III regards for him we can also think of the possibility that he might have observed Taqqaya in the favor of Pakistan with agreement with the Aga Khan III]

I think it is a poor representation of the Knoja/Ismaili history by Dr Akhtar primarily owing to his poor grasp of Urdu.His English passages were vey good. Please either have him speak entirely in English or have another guest to talk in Urdu. No offence meant and I hope none will be taken to heart.
